The recording business can be finicky. And surprising. You might think that you’re hit is going to be on the A side of the record. Sometimes, it just doesn’t turn off that way!

I remember in elementary school, 5th grade I believe, every guy in my class playing the Wipe Out drum roll before class. Someone one start us off with their best rendition of that manic laugh and then scream "wipe out". We let it rip. Most of us couldn't hold the beat. It didn't matter. We made a lot of noise.

Finger drumming " Wipeout " in my Junior High School in the years of 1966 to 1967 , was a challenge , if not , a rite of passage , amongst non - musician males , as it was the only thing of that sort , that they could do ! I did NOT participate , as I was starting to really learn guitar playing !!!

I never knew it started as a B side! I knew some of this story, but not all of it. Great stuff! Duane Eddy & the Rebels' 1958 recording , "Rebel Rouser", was a B-Side. Dick Clark ran out of things to play at a dance party, and flipped Duanes' A-Side, "Stalkin''", over....and a career was made!

Wipe Out was my very first 45!! I’m not sure why but it had a beat and it stuck with you and I loved it and I was a huge Beach Boys fan as time went on, so it was kind of fitting that my first venture into the world of 45 records would be a surfer song! Thanks for the back story! I didn’t realize the whole history, but being not even 10 when I bought it, I had ventured into that brave new world of early 60’s music, never to look back! And I still have that 45!

Thanks for thoroughly explaining the history of that song ~ I can remember picking up a pair of sticks back in 1964 (I was 14) and beating on our metal trash cans trying to play that drum solo and my mother yelling at me to knock it off ~ That was when I realized that I shouldn't become a drummer ~

Another great video! The band I was in in 1967 & '68, called The Ramrods, of course played Wipe Out too. We played AM Radio Top 40 hits and Wipe Out was a crowd favorite, but our drummer hated it LOL! Too much work! We also played Beach Boy songs and some Ventures tunes. When I became a Jimi Hendrix fan and listened to his first album "Are You Experienced", I chuckled when on the song "Third Stone From The Sun" the psychedelic Hendrix spoke the line, "...never hear surf music again...". But I was never too cool to appreciate that mostly cheerful & upbeat genre and I still do.

Great story! You really made it come alive! Surfer Joe was actually the hit in my home town. Re Hung on You - Phil Spector was so annoyed with DJ's playing "Unchained Melody" over Hung On You, because it meant he, as a co-author, made less money from mechanical royalties, that he would ring up DJs and harrass and threaten them for not playing it. It's impossible not to think that the conversation ended with the DJ saying "Yeah Phil? What are you gonna do about it? Shoot me?"

Link Wray recorded a song on his 1979 album Bullshot called “Switchblade” which was a Peter Gunn style instrumental. The intro as you described was reenacted with a menacing delivery by singer Robert Gordon whistling while walking with heavy heels before clicking open a switchblade and announcing “Switchblade”.

The Horse by Cliff Nobles was originally supposed to be the “B” side of Love Is Alright. But when a Disc Jockey accidentally played The Horse, it became an instant hit and Love Is alright became the unplayed song.

A similar thing happened in England back in 1958, but a totally different out come. EMI signed a promising singer the 1st song (A side)to be recorded was a cover of an American song Schoolboy Crush. The producer asked the singer and his backing group, then called the Drifters if they had one of their own. Just so happened that Ian Samwell had written one on the bus, but only had the 1st verse done before they got to the studio . They liked it told them just to repeat the verse and poof wa la. Now, a guy who had a TV show called Oh Boy ( Jack Good) heard the record and wanted the singer on his show, but he wasn’t going to do the A side--He told EMI it had to be the B side. The song is called Move It and the singer is Cliff Richard. ( who at 83 is still recording and putting on concerts! He made it big everywhere in the world except here in the USA for some unknown reason other than he never wanted to spend 6 months here. His band the Drifters name was changed to the Shadows with various artists coming an and going until the final lineup. They had hits in Their own right. Cliff had got EMI to sign them eventually as well. When the band broke up in the sixties and Cliff went solo, they still got together for several reunion tours and special occasions. The band members had other things they wanted to do as well. Cliff and they guys made several memorable movies in the sixties as well. Cliff had several variety TV series and various west end London plays. So, the same kinda situation, but a whole different 7:38 outcome. Cliff was in his early years considered the British Elvis. I’m a fan , if you couldn’t tell. I bought an album back in 82 was the 1st I ever saw of his over here and after that tried to find everything he ever recorded. Many a time I had to order from overseas. Now he has his own KZbin channel.

Now how that went was the band who recorded their song on side one didn’t want to be associated with that song which was on the flip side so they used a made up name for their band for that song. They called themselves Steam. I can see them thinking that song was not too good. Which it wasn’t. Yet it ended up being a smash hit. Who would’ve thought? I forget what the band was originally called.

Ron Wilson attended Charter Oak High in Covina; the rest of them went to Glendora High. It's Charter Oak's sped-up cadence that the drum part is based on. Also, the guitar riff bears a strong resemblance to the lesser-known Duane Eddy (RIP, King of Twang) tune, "Yep."

Funny that you would mention the Prunes, because I’ve had a video on them in the closet that I really didn’t like after I completed it, and so never published it. One thing that I always have to evaluate is whether the time investment in production will yield a popular video. I have investigated several one hit bands and found a few interesting stories. For those, if there is enough material to warrant production, then I’ll do a long form.

I heard or read the group consisted of college fraternity brothers and that one of the members was now-San Antonio area preacher Rick Godwin.

I observed a local band that started out as a surf sound but then abruptly switched to playing Hendrix the next year ( notably “Manic Depression”) including feedback effects. The 2 guitarists played Fender Mustangs through Bandmasters and it seemed really magical at the time. I had never heard feedback distortion effects before.

Ronnie Wilson was a good friend. We played in a bagpipe band together. I used to always see him and his wife around Glendora. I was sorry to hear he died from a fall off his roof. I also went to school with Jim Pash who carried on the Sufaries name along with Bob Berryhill.

Another good example of a B-side that became a hit was Cast Your Fate To The Wind by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. It reached no. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 9 on the Easy Listening chart. The A-Side, Samba de Orpheus, never charted at all.

Wow!! My buddies and myself had such a band. I thought we were pretty good. Had about 50 songs and played Wipeout. Of all the songs I’d sit behind my drums and kids would say, play Wipeout. Really the easiest song we did. Being a band in west Texas we heard Roy Orbison was in Odessa so we drove there trying to find and meet him. No luck. With all the music stars from out there we hoped to make our mark but parents stopped all that. It was still a great time in my life.

The Doobie Brothers encountered the same thing in the early '70's. Warner Bros. released the single "Another Park, Another Sunday". The single wasn't performing well chart-wise, when DJ's started playing the B-side "Black Water". Black Water ended up becoming played more often, and being more popular, that Warner Bros. re-released the single, switching the A side and B side. The rest is history.

The DBs had a hard time getting started. It would appear that one of the best serendipity was the addition of Michael McDonald. It changed the entire sound cosmetic of the group, but also ushered in a long line of solid hits.

I was told that BORN TO LOSE (THE B SIDE TO I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU) by Ray Charles was the biggest selling 45 b side in history (at that time) It was written by Ted Daffen a.k.a. Frankie Brown. Any truth to that? I do know BORN TO LOSE (which was recorded by quite a few country artists) was Ray's biggest hit. I know it got Mr. Daffen a platinum record! great video! Thanks

“Born To Lose” version by Ray Charles wasn’t a hit, but it was covered from the original 1943 version by many artists, and the aggregate sales may be the origin of the statement.

Interesting story. I'm not sure if I've ever heard Surfer Joe. I'll have to have a listen and see if it rings a bell. I wonder if Wipeout is the song you don't want to play in music stores when testing out drums, like they tell you not to play Smoke on the Water with guitars?

You can find “Surfer Joe” on KZbin. You’ll hear some similarities to wipeout in chord structure. It’s surf rap - in that aspect, it was a recording before its time. I guess.

Huh, I remember hearing "Surfer Joe" all the time on the radio growing up. I always thought it was a big hit, but then again I grew up in California. I have always thought of the Surf Music genre as the most authentic sound of youth because they were mostly all kids themselves. Some of the more prominent bands that had High School age members included The Beach Boys, The Bel-Airs, The Chantays and the band featured here, The Surfaris More recently The Linda Lindas from Southern California also capture that same spark of youth.

That Thing You Do has a lot of truth to it. In about two hours, it tells the story 10,000 bands-or more-experienced and still experience.I know cuz I did it. Best line is from Tom Hanks (“Mr. White,” the manager): “Well, Guy. Right now Jimmy, your singer, is in violation of his contract. But it’s all right. No one’s going to jail.” Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

Yeah - Hanks nailed it with that exchange. The other bit in that flick that hits you in the face is when the “Wolfman” Scott Pell is plugged into the group by the record label manager after the original bass player goes AWOL. Drummer Guy Patterson: “No offense, but we’ve been playing together for a long time. Can he handle our song?” Then Pell says “I think I can handle it, Junior”. And rattles off a 5 second bass solo that is a stratosphere above the group’s level .

@@the_guitar_trooper I lived in Havasu in the mid Sixties and after sundown we would be able to pick up AM stations from LA and that is when I would get the Wolfman. Plus Vin Scully and Dodger baseball. Good times growing up.
