Hi there, I live in Toronto and the tipping culture here is getting out of control. Some restaurants have increased the minimum tipping rate to 18%, and some even to 22%. My craziest experience was when I bought french fries from a food truck. When I made the payment, I didn't notice that a 15% tip was automatically added to the total bill, so I paid. When I collected the receipt, I realized the tip had been added without my consent. I told the cashier that I was not willing to pay the tip as there was no service involved. The lady looked at me angrily and threw some coins at me. I was furious. The tipping culture here is out of control! There have been reports that some restaurant owners are unwilling to pay salaries to their waiters, instead transferring this responsibility to the customers, which is unreasonable.

Tipping culture is an import from the US. Thank them!

@@treepazr4270 However, Canada is experiencing even more issues now, and many businessmen here, like those at Loblaws, lack corporate ethics and responsibility...😮💨

Wow that’s crazy are they even allowed to do that ?? Luckily in Vancouver I haven’t experience that yet but it’s getting close to that too but usually it has a hidden option of others at the bottom of the tip percentage selection after 15 %,18%,20%,22% and others in small letters lol 😂 so sneaky !

That’s why I prefer cash, I already counted the exact amount including tips to be paid, the tipping without consent will not happen

even Hong Kong would just be 10 percent service charge.
The tip persentages show on the card machine are just the "recommended" options. Tips is not manditory especially on take-out. However, 10% of tips is kinda cultural for service appreciation.
Is the 10% tips before or after tax? I always give the after tax amount
@raymondpang38199 күн бұрын
Before tax. Taxes are separated charges from the bill total.

I will only tips 15% to 20% when the service is good; If it's bad 10% or less. In the USA tipping is not the law; it's more like a good things to do or kindness or you will be given a name like A Good Tippers etc.
For mainstream restaurants, the minimum tip is 15%, not 10%. However, since last year, many mainstream restaurants have raised the minimum default tip to 18% already. In the hospitality industry, including food courier like Ubereat, DoorDash, workers live on tip. So for Hong Kongers, please be generous in tipping. Unlike Hong Kong, most of the time, we just leave the change as tip. Or even no tip if the menu has clearly stated 10% service charge will be added automatically. Here in Canada, the only exception not to tip is when you order take away, for example, get a cup of coffee from the Timmies, McDonald's.

No la most local Canadians are unwilling to pay that many tips coz it doesn’t make sense

Pay. 佢哋真係靠貼士 make the living.

服務性行業提供基本服務,係part of their job nature, 做within their job description 的事情,點解要俾tips?
10% is pre convid, Right now it is about 12-15%. Non Chinese places are 15%+ No tips for take out.

@@the_sy_family 將俾tips當做文化嘅一部份? Tips 係 gratuity, i.e. gratuitous/discretionary。

First, the tipping culture is already a barbarian act, every workers are paid to do their job, tipping should be totally abandoned in every country, if a waiter needs a tip after serving you, then a nurse or a doctor or anybody serving you should also receive a tip. secondly, the culture that cars should give way to pedestrians scientifically speaking is illogical even though it exist in Canada, it is their way of thinking, the same criteria happens at sea such that a small boat should always give way to a large ship because it is easier, pedestrians should always give way to cars because the speed of a car is very much higher than a pedestrian and a car passes by fast and the pedestrian only needs to walk slower and there is no loss, but if a car needs to stop to wait for a pedestrian to pass the road, then it waste a lot of time and also starting and stopping a car causes fuel waste and mechanical wear and tear and is totally not scientifically efficient.
