You're my "hero of the day!" I saw a local ad for a "killer deal" on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland just like yours. I owned a 1996 Grand Cherokee until 2021 when I sold it to a mechanic friend of mine. I miss it, and I wanted another, newer one. I was actually thinking of going to the dealership and driving this Jeep, and then I watched this video. I'm not sure I want "Jeep things" back in my life at this stage. I could just wait a year and buy a new one with a warranty. You may have saved me $20,000 with your honest review. Owning a Grand Cherokee is like having a relationship with a beautiful but high-maintenance woman. When it's great it's great, but when it goes bad, it's really bad.

Just a heads up for your viewers- thermostat housing cracks is a common thing and super easy fix with a $28 part and quick you-tube video, but make sure you order the redesigned beefier unit to avoid having the same problem down the road. They reinforced the plastic at the bend,so the difference is visible. Also, for those who live in areas with bright hot sun, make sure to treat and protect the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield. Besides fade, it becomes brittle and cracks. Door hinges fail and stop holding the door open. Ask my left lower leg how I know. Still, it's actually been a great vehicle overall, and the only vehicle I've ever owned that I'm still in love with. At 7 years old, it's also the longest time I've ever kept a vehicle. One last thing- from personal experience. Not all WK2’s are good or bad. Some owners get lucky, and have very little issues over very many miles, other owners aren't lucky at all and get one that has nothing but issues. That, my friend, IS a "Jeep Thing"

My WK2 has 112,000 on it. 12 years old. Since new it’s needed 4 parts replaced: - blower motor - blend door actuator - a/c condenser / trans oil cooler (1 part) - windshield cowl (rubber strip) The blower motor wasn’t dead, but like you said the pressure wasn’t strong enough it cool the rear, but once I replaced that, the car cools down really quick and the pressure is really strong. I bought the Mopar version on rock auto for $130. I change all fluids every 30k miles, alignment once per year, and filters once per year. Oil changes every 4,000 on the dot or before with factory full synthetic oil (Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic, and I use MOPAR parts and fluids), except for shocks and brakes. PowerStop and KYB respectively for those. Love it.

LJ, I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee Laredo and have never experienced that transmission issue. I have had to replace my transmission mounts, oil filter housing (more preemptive to ensure the original plastic housing does not crack), rack and pinion and ignition coils and that is all. I have performed more but they have been for performance =, not repairs. I add an intake system, performance ignition coils and plugs, my brakes and a few others items but no issues with it. I truly enjoy it. My odometer is 134,400 now (3/26/2023) and I purchased it at approx. 74k miles in 2020 at the very beginning of the virus.

Good video bro! My wife drives a 2018 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6 that we bought brand new. It was good for the first 50k miles. Our transmission went out at 59,600 miles. So thank God we barely made the it within warranty and they covered it, but it took them 2 months to complete. It’s been non stop electrical problems since about 65,000 Miles. Whether it’s the radio not turning on or not turning off. The touch screen freezing. The gear selector not responding to put it in gear. The blower motor for the AC going out and or the blower motor not activating until you turn off and restart the car. Too say the least, we’ll never buy another Jeep. It’s a shame cause the Grand Cherokees are really beautiful cars that are fast and ride nice. But it’s been a bad experience.

@@odestryjam2231to be fair 1k of that 3k was cosmetic and I didn’t really have to pay if I didn’t want to. My navigation screen started to have air bubbles and that was just annoying to me. Alot of the other stuff was covered by the manufacturer warranty that was still in place at the time (engine cylinder misfire issue/water pump failing issue) for example. The remaining 2K I came out of pocket on was to do things like putting a new radiator in and correct a rattling sound issue that was going on underneath my car with Shem s. Let’s just say after all that when my manufacturer warranty finally ended I purchased a third-party warranty the next day.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee currently 178,413 miles. Just had the oil cooler replaced. YES, it has the valve ticks. It's had front and rear facia replaced due to minor accidents. It gets regular maintenance. OBTW 1997 with 226,430 miles, same engine, three transmission, FIVE radiators, new EPROM/primary computer at 190,xxx. Rear end hatch inop due to getting hit (five times).. starts and runs every day UPDATE 2011, water pump and thermostatat at 187,880. Will be it's last dealership service. They refuse to warranty DODGE parts I BOUGHT for them to use. 3 WEEKS couldn't get a thermostat. I drove 20 miles to a Dodge shop and hand delivered it to the shop.

Great Video and comments. Thank you. I had a 2014 GC Limited (sold it due to its strange/confusing shifter) and currently have a 2016 GC 75th anniversary Limited both with 3.6L and 20" wheels. I think the transmission ( in 2014-2022 models) is 8 speed. My 2016 has the check engine light on for about two weeks now and the turn signal when turn for right turn does not cancel. At 92K miles, it runs fine and I agree with you that it is a great feeling and driving SUV. They are roomy, quiet, and drive very smoothly, and they have enough weight that you feel secure in them. Never felt the transmission acting up, you described. I do all the maintenance myself and so far it has been easy. Will tackle the turn signal assembly ($450!) change myself soon. On so many V-6 these days, the intake manifold is in the way to get to one bank of plugs.

I have a 2017 JGC Altitude with approx 79k miles on the 3.6. Battery voltage began fluctuating between 10v and 16v on idle, with intermittent flashing of the dash console, but none of the interior lighting or navigation/infotainment panel. Battery reads 12v at rest, but won't start without a jump. One instance of power loss while driving, with no increase in RPM while accelerator is compressed. Then, suddenly received these dash messages: "Park assist temporarily disabled" "Steering assist temporarily disabled" "Place vehicle in park or neutral and restart to reset transmission" (Vehicle was in park when all of these messages signaled. Jeep sat for a week while I tried to figure out the issue, jumped it just to keep juices flowing and as to not cause any memory issues, no engine light, no warning messages, no power issues, ran like a champ. Battery still reads 10v to 11v with engine off. Dash reading showed strong 14v on idle. Haven't checked the aux battery yet as it is under the passenger seat and well, time. All voltage checks thus far have shown no indication of a trickle drain anywhere. Fuses all look okay. Any suggestions? Saw a video disabling the ESS via fuse removal and grounding of auxillary neg terminal to bypass/disable but I hesitate on this as it seems to also disable remote start. Single parent on limited time/funds and cannot afford to be out of a vehicle for much longer. Out of warranty and still under financing. 😢

funny story about its a jeep thing.. in the 80's jeep made an all-wheel drive wagon called the jeep-amc-eagle wagon and they were pretty much the first cross over.. my sister bought a brand new 1988 limited edition and my good friends mom bought the same one just different color my sister gave it to here first daughter in 2003 with some 270k miles only ever replacing the tires, brakes, belts and hoses and oil changes... it always started, never leaked and was one of the best cars I can remember... now the other one was a nightmare.. same dealership same vehicale it was in the shop for a week home for a month an the shop a week hom e for a month for over 7 or 8 months until they made the dealership take it back under Mass. lemon laws.. I have owned a few jeeps cj-5 and 2 cj-7's and 3 jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and currently the only one bought brand new at the end of 2016 is a 2015 Rootbeer colored GC Summit Hemi 4x4 sticker was 62k and we got it for 48k otd. when looking for a used one the trick is to find one that hasnt been in service 48 months or over 48k miles because then you can get the LIFETIME WARRENTY which covers everything you fixed plus so much more.. more than any warrenty i have ever seen even the 19 speakers of the Harman Kardon 900 watt stereo are covered as is the air ride.. 100k miles so far no problems. its fast, and powerful if u want that red light to red light fun, just downshift with the left paddle shifter and it will switch it into race mode.. drop it 2 inches and uncork the exhaust.. the rest of the time it swallows you in comfort . i havent found anything better for the price yet..

Check engine lights are for things affecting emissions. How does the thermostat trigger a check engine light as it has zero effect on the emissions process?
@LJsGarage Жыл бұрын

@onlyonecannoli3952 Жыл бұрын
@@LJsGarage That makes more sense. Thank you for the clarification and thanks for taking the time to document your experience. It was very helpful!

The thermostat is critical for emissions. If the thermostat sticks open it takes the engine a long time to reach operating temperature. Emissions systems are based on engines getting to operating temperature quickly since a cold engine requires much more fuel to run efficiently(think choke on an old vehicle-the computer basically adds more fuel in order to make it run properly until it warms up thus increasing emissions). The engine computer monitors the coolant temperature and if it consistently runs cooler or doesn't reach operating temperature on a consistent basis the check engine light will come on.
@onlyonecannoli395211 ай бұрын
@@jameseast4033 I get what you're say, but I have run vehicles in the past without a thermostat for short periods and that didn't result in a check engine light. It just takes longer to get to a proper operating temperature. That is, of course, important in colder climates as it affects the viscosity of the oil and can lead to premature wear or engine breakdown under extremely low ambient temperature ( e.g. -15 degrees). However, in my experience, I have never seen that affect the emissions system leading to a check engine warning. The O2 sensors, catalytic converters, EGR valve, PCV valve, defective Mass Flow sensor, bad plugs, crack vacuum hoses, etc., are far more likely to result in a check engine warning. But I have an open mind, if you actually experienced a check engine light as a result of a thermostat, and were able to independently confirm that as the cause, I would really like to get all the details to see how that actually happened and why that was the case.

@@LJsGarage Dude, I’m telling you. They might not even know about it. Mine got better and better each time I filled it up. I used standard ramps on passenger side, once trans temp cooled to 86-100*F and filled it until it came out. Drove it around for a few days and made sure it got passed 160 so it goes thru the cooling system. Put it back on ramps while below 80* to make sure fluid hadn’t expanded and was able to add almost another half qrt. I didn’t even wait until it stopped dripping and just put fill plug back on and it’s been perfect ever since. Doesn’t slip at all. Idk why they designed it that way but you really have to fill it up otherwise you’ll get that slipping feeling. I also don’t know why these trans fluid change videos don’t give updates because there’s no way theirs wasn’t doing the same thing mine was. Note: I changed the pan that has the filter in it too so had to let it cycle thru. Just keep adding until you can’t once lifted on passenger side. Make sure you use the Mopar 8-9 speed even tho it’s pricey af. I got it from the dealership. Lmk if you ever get around to doing it! It will get rid of the slipping feeling!

I really didn`t have any problems until I hit 100,000 miles on the car. At 100,000 had a misfire code, went ahead and replaced the 6 spark plugs and coil packs for $150.00 my cost. At 115,000 Thermostat code failed and an aftermarket one and replaced for $ 40.00 my cost. At 130,000 Replaced all brake pads and rotors for $ 300.00 my cost. At 140,000 Replaced fuel cap code, easy fix for $ 30.00 my cost. At 150,000 Replaced the driver window switch from the plastic buttons breaking off $ 50.00 my cost. At 160,000 Had to replace a bent door actuator under the dash for $ 30.00 my cost. At 175,000 the oil pressure sensor failed code, do I go ahead and replace the oil cooler with an aluminum one $ 120.00 my cost. I've had mine for six years now and it hasn't had a single issue. It has never been in for service. Nothing but normal maintenance so far. Oil changes, tires, brakes, and a new battery. Oh, and I just got new wiper blades.

Yep, a mission to replace parts, for sure. I keep my headlights off during daylight to conserve the bulbs, don't want to go through that hell again so soon just to replace a bulb. Thanks for the video.

Id reccomend changing the cabin air filter to the lowest quality possible. I know this sounds counterintuitive but the nicer the CAF the more restrictive it is to flow. I had this issue with my ram. I could not believe how long it took to cool down. swapped out the CAF and now it blows ice cold and the fan is more than twice the strength.

I’ve had a ‘14, ‘18 and ‘21 (all overland trims) and never had an issue with either one. I’ll be holding on to the ‘21 for a while because I just can’t get on board with the new body styling.

i might be buying a 2017 overland this week. Have any of yours had bubbling/wrinkling on the dashboard? I've heard this is a very common and frustrating problem with the overlands.
@up48829 күн бұрын
@@tinagood640Never had the dash bubbling problem in any of my GC’s. To be honest I never any major issues with my GC’s. Truly a solid vehicle hence why I keep buying them. Not to mention they look sexy as hell.

It's funny, I've been looking heavily the past week at Overlands.. so far my favorite trim.. would you recommend getting the 2015? Instead of a 14? The reason I ask, is do you think it maybe less problems? I have a durango now, and it has air vents for every row, but does not have the panoramic sunroof. I have a daughter so I don't want her hot or cold in the back.. will your truck eventually get fully cooled down during the summers? Lol I have lots of questions
@LJsGarage2 жыл бұрын
Haha no problem! I would mostly certainly get the 15+. The 14 was the first year with a few eco features and weird maps and the new to Jeep 8spd auto so just a trial year. The vent It gets cold enough so no stress there but the fan pressure could be better when all vents are open. You can just close some front ones though if ever it was bad

i have a 2015 GC Overland that I bought new. Only problem I've had was the fuel door wouldn't release when pushing the release button. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I would suggest looking for something 2017 or newer. You won't have to deal with the moonshifter. The moonshifter makes it hard to tell what gear you're in without looking at the PRNDL to see where it actually is. People thought was in park but it was drive or reverse. Folks got run over and into accidents. That shifter was deleted for a detent shifter after so many owners had issues with it. The last year for the moonshifter was 2015.

I have a 2015 Limited with the 3.6 and 95,000 miles. It's been good to me so far. I run synthetic and change oil around 5,000 miles. Still on original rotors and brake pads. I think not driving like a total jackass helps. I'll probably pay the dealer for plugs, don't feel like dealing with removing the plastic intake in the way. Also, it uses a ZF 8 speed auto. I had my TCM reflashed once, which seemed to help. Shifting now seems fine.

I think you just "scared me straight". I was looking at getting a newer one (2021) with maybe a v8 but I really dont have any room in my life for repairing cars. My attached garage doesnt have any room for repairing cars. Maybe I need to stick to dependable and one I can drop off at the dealership. I have a Ford dealer and a Nissan dealer with in walking distance. So maybe I should stick with one of their products. But knowing how life is I will probably move and my next home will probably have a Jeep dealer nearby and I will be wishing I did buy the Grand Cherokee High Altitude but it sounds like even the mechanics dont want to work on these either. Shame, cool looking cars. Great video sir, are you a professional mechanic (tech)?
@LJsGarage Жыл бұрын
Thanks my friend! I am an HVAC tech turned garage mechanic lol. I think a 2018+ would be worth a shot. I have heard some say the models released during COVID is a gamble but honestly with this generation they worked out a lot of the kinks by 18.

I have a ticking at 115,000 miles. I was told by the dealer $4100. Heard of this before? I can’t decide if it’s worth spending that kind of $ on. It’s had oil pressure sensor and the oil cooler changed. The rest, regular maintenance.

Sold my 02 wj overland yesterday and I bawled like a baby. Mind you I’ve had 20 other cars and this is the first one I’ve ever cried about after selling. I’ve been looking at another one possibly a WK2. Wasn’t aware that they came with a 10 speed. Thought they all came with the 8 speed ZF transmission
