Question - I took a soda bottle, opened it and poured a little bit out. I squeezed the upper part of the plastic bottle, closed it firmly and let it sit for a whole day to get to equilibrium. Then, I shook the bottle real good - and it straightened right away and wasn't wrinkly anymore - Hasn't the pressure increased??

I love watching your videos. This made me think of the good ol' MRE bombs we made in the Army. I'd love to see you do a video on that. This is where you take the heater (or the contents... magnesium) of an MRE, put it in a water bottle (not too full) and put the cap on it. Do this outdoors as the bottle WILL blow. It's best to use thick plastic like Gatorade bottles or thick water bottles as the thin, cheap plastic will burst through before enough pressure builds up and you'll get a "wet toot" sound instead of a nice boom! Would you do a video on this??

I don't understand why this guy gets a lot of dislikes his videos are fun and educating
@HeavyMetal-HardRock9 ай бұрын
The reason why he gets a lot of dislikes is because he goes against all the science projects you learned in high school or middle school. He's wrong. A lot of the times. I learned in junior high and in high school the pressure does increase in a shaken bottle of soda. He's trying to undo everything that we've ever learned and try to say that it was wrong lol which is just ridiculous. Go ahead buy a bottle of pop. Shake it up really hard. You can feel how tight it gets that tightness is pressure. So yes, the pressure does rise in a shaken bottle of soda. And if you put mentos in a bottle of Coke, the pressure rises. He thinks we're all morons and we'll just believe whatever he says. When conventional science is against, even what he's saying.

It is also the way rock candy is made. You take a supersaturated solution of sugar and water and place a wooden stick inside of it. On that stick you place a tiny lump of crystalized sugar. It forms a nucleation or seeding site for other sugar crystals to latch onto. The same thing works for the mentos, one CO2 bubble sticks to you, then 2, then 4, 8, and so on. Kidney stones also grow in your body in the same way.

If the pressure increases the reaction will stop. You can actually see this because when the mentos was dropped in it first started bubbling but then stopped. This is due to the pressure increasing to a certain level at witch the reaction stops. Thats also the reason why te pressures where the same

Does this mean that you can put dry ice in an empty bottle and it won't explode? If so, try it. If not, try it. Please
@TheActionLab7 жыл бұрын
Of course not. Dry ice is solid CO2 and when it sublimates in the bottle it creates an enormous amount of pressure it will for sure explode:)
@fischX7 жыл бұрын
That depends on the bottle, the temperature and the amount of dry ice, with a phase diagram of co2 and bottle ratings you can answer your question.
@yaksher7 жыл бұрын
Dry ice sublimates with a vapor pressure which, at room temperature, is enough to cause the bottle to explode (and from one of the King of Random's earlier videos, apparently even enough pressure to form _liquid_ CO2 (and the soda bottle can hold that pressure. They're incredibly hard to burst)). Here we have dissolved gases coming out and that also has a maximum pressure-the pressure they were dissolved into the liquid at, or in other words, the initial pressure of the bottle.

If shaking a bottle doesn't increase the pressure, then why do tin cans bulge if you shake them?
@geminirox86356 жыл бұрын
because he's just straight up wrong
@Dyltheboy6 жыл бұрын
True
@mysteryman96415 жыл бұрын
My explanation to your question is: So basically the can is full of soda to the brim and not much space where anything else could fit inside. When you shake it gas is released and has nowhere to go. So pressure is technically increased temporarily because the gas is not dissolved into the liquid and it is trying to escape but has nowhere for it to go, this then causes the can to bulge as the gas forces against the can trying to escape. But it will go back to equilibrium without being opened and the Co2 will dissolve back into the liquid and it will be less firm again. I think he explained it wrong. There will be no permanent increase in pressure as there is only a certain amount of Co2 in the bottle/can and there is no way to make more. You shake -> gas releasing from liquid -> gas tries to escape bottle/can but can't -> bulging can; leave it to sit -> back to equilibrium and gas will dissolve back into liquid. Bulges may stay as metal (aluminium) is warped. Does this now make sense?

There is a difference in mixing a liquid with small particles and putting a layer of particles on top.

@The Action Lab When I saw the title of this video, I think my ears actually perked up. The results of this really are fascinating. 0.o At this point the question becomes, what is the difference between coke and diet coke that make them react so differently? I understood most of your explanation, but one would think that coke and diet coke would be much more similar.
@wesleyson217 жыл бұрын
Draygoes Mythbusters actually explored this quite a bit and determined that the caffeine, artificial sweeteners and also the higher acid content all play a factor. It isn't just the nucleation sites that causes the reaction.
@draygoes7 жыл бұрын
wesleyson21 - Ah, I will have to check that out. Thank you for the info. This opens up a new world of thought. Keeping everything in mind, there might actually be a close to perfect combination for the largest reaction.

2 questions: 1- it was said the Metons trick woked only with diet coke. Could a different chemical reaction be happening with an incredient in diet coke but not in coke? 2- when I was youger, the shake can before you give it to friend really worked, whereas now, it appears to be far less of an impact. Is it possible that since the 1980s, they changed formulation of drinks so the foaming doesn't happen as much?
@krist60743 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing these cool videos!! So basically a container or a plastic bottle will never be able to pop, because the fluid inside of it can never get to a greater pressure. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it actually. I guess the only reason a plastic bottle or container will pop when you drop it, is if the plastic or metal gets a weakened structure that'll make it pop?

Normally I really like your videos because you do a thorough job of explaining things as well as showing them in great detail, buuuuuut on this one I feel like it was half baked. You used a 20oz DIet Coke and our one mento in there. That would be like would you use your vacuum chamber to test things but don’t take them to full vacuum. Again, normally your videos are great but this one felt very low grade unfortunately. I really hope you can make another video with different size bottles and different types of soda; and especially way more mentos.
@vis94876 жыл бұрын
Did any of you get the point of the video? @Narwadeshwar Sahai, the guy clearly explained why mentos and CO2 have absolutely nothing to do with pressure, even if you throw in a million mentos it will just let the CO2 leave the drink, the molecules just moved from one place to another, no matter how fast that is happening. That's the easiest explanation I can give you. @Jeremyatrujillo, literally the same explanation is on point for you too.. Just try to hear and understand what the guy is trying to explain.

Try to understand bro it's all about equilibrium. In this system it keeps on getting back to its equilibrium. All mentos does is provide a surface for nucleation doesn't even react with the drink. You need something to react and generate more gas in a short amount of time so that it fails to attain equilibrium. Only then explosion can occur.

It got rock hard the instant the two touched, and then we smashed the bottle into the ground. The sheer jet of coke was enough to make it fly for like 70mts. After some time, the menthos pack changed, it was no longer white but blueish white (the same flavour of menthos), and with those menthos the reaction was laughable compared to the white ones.. Please cut the music i really want to stay subscribed, but if you play music over your voice i may as well unsubscibe like some of my colleagues have alredy done.

I've felt increases in pressure with shaking, but the effect is lost if the shaking is too extreme

Just came across this which reminded me of how I created a huge *bang* by accidentally leaving a 2L bottle of carbonated water in the freezer overnight. I discovered it the next day, and placed it on a kitchen worktop. An hour or so later there was a huge *bang* and the kitchen was covered in ice and the plastic bottle was shredded. I keep meaning to try this again (but under safer conditions). I imagine the CO2 came out of solution and over-pressurised the plastic bottle.

What if we fill half a bottle with vinegar then put a napkin in halfway making a sort of valley with the end sticking out the top. Fill that valley with baking soda suspended over the vinegar then tighten that up with the cap. Would that explode or equalize?

So you're telling me that fish can't breathe pure H2O?
@CablDragon2 жыл бұрын
Okay, first of all the density of a 16 oz. bottle is much higher than a 2 ltr. bottle. Also the jackass that blew up the 2 ltr soda put about 4 or 5 in. So basically the larger vessel is thinner, thus weaker, yet it holds more liquid causing a harsher reaction. One final point(very important) would be to crush the candy slightly for a quicker reaction as well. You might consider something a bit more rigid to hide behind instead of the plexi too.

+The Action Lab I wonder if shaking or mentos also helps to decompose some of the carbonic acid inside the soda. As soda fizzes out, it also doesn't burn nearly as much, which indicates that much of the carbonic acid (formed from dissolved CO2 reacting with water) has also been destroyed. Also, I guess gas pressure is like vapor pressure. As soon as you open the soda, the gas pressure above the liquid must drop from 2 atmospheres to 1 atmosphere. This also liberates some of the dissolved CO2. You could get out even more CO2 by placing it vacuum in a vacuum. Those people on the internet must be faking, because the amount of pressure needed to burst a plastic soda bottle is on the order of 10 atmospheres (from what I looked up once)! That might be a good video, by the way. How much pressure is required to burst soda bottles of different sizes. The required pressure is less for a larger bottle

+DANG JOS yeah those videos are for sure faked. About the carbon acid, I measured the pH with mentors and it didn't change so I'm not sure how much putting in mentors changes the carbonic acid (other than just releasing CO2 faster)

When I was younger (and stupider!), a friend of mine and I used to do experiments with dry ice... His mom worked for a medical testing lab and would occasionally bring home a block of dry ice for us to play around with. So we did the usual chunks of dry ice in the warm water and then in an enclosed plastic 2 liter bottle (it expanded to almost a sphere and then finally exploded). Then...one of us got the bright idea of putting it in a *glass* 2 liter bottle (hard to find those anymore) to see what would happen.... Well, after an hour or so it still had not exploded, so we figured we would "help it"... So one of us threw a small rock at it and (no exaggeration) it sounded like a hand grenade had gone off! My mom and dad came running outside, saying "What the HELL was THAT?!" Looking back on it, my friend and I should not have made it into adulthood...

I'd like to know how much pressure it takes to burst one of those bottles. Could you measure that somehow?

Put a few MRE heater packets into an empty soda bottle. Then add water, cap it, and quickly shake it up, then throw it.

Hi there, I liked the explanation. Why does Baking Soda and Vinegar in a bottle explode? I assume it creates a reaction producing gas..? I'll Google it but would love to see an explanation in your videos :-) if you haven't already done one...

So mentos is like a catalyst. However it kind of gets consumed in the process.

Say I really loved mentos and I ate a few packets and then drank an entire bottle of soda, would I have a funny bugs bunny stomach explosion moment, or a great way of winning the burping competition? 😂
