Agreed. Video games arent a problem if parents do their jobs and make them realise its a game and not to take any of it seriously (gta and crazy taxi) . Many kids get unhinged because they cannot control their emotions yet when frustrated or angry from hard games or trolls. Many also are just spoiled. Que the kid who wanted a pc but got a ps5 for christmas lol. The amount of kids exposed to streamers and games who make jokes that they then copy and place out of context is stunning. Look at the among us and fortnight phase. It is only cringe due to the excessive use of fortnight dances and among us jokes. It doesnt actually cause the issues. If it wasnt the video games it would be something else like beyblades or legos. A young kid will get upset if you take away their teddy bear. Its not that different you just let them cry until they get over it and earn it back. Having a child is hard work these parents need to get over it and accept their responsability. If a kid is able to buy an adult game on their console without adult supervision thats on the parents. They should be there when they buy the games giving them access to the money lol. Im pretty sure many children would do some bad things with unlimited access to their parents credit cards.

One could tinfoil hat this approach and suspect "they" don't want you or your kids to know how debts, loans and property management works so they can take advantage of your lack of knowledge and "they" use the "think of the children!" narrative to curb that knowledge. Fr tho. They’re just fearmongering. You don’t get withdrawals if you stop playing games cold turkey after playing them for years. You feel the urge to game and might be mad that you can’t, but that goes for just about anything you enjoy. There were multiple times in my childhood when my mom straight took all my shit for the whole year because I did something bad or did poorly in school and, while I was always pissed for a while, it ended up not really even affecting me that much. I could still have fun and be happy, and in fact I’m glad my mom did that looking back.

One of my happiest memories as a parent was my daughter sitting on my lap blowing away zombies and imps with a shotgun in the original Doom using a 360 controller, she would giggle and laugh everytime we got one. We spent hours playing and eating excessive amounts of pizza. You have to know your kid, you have to pay attention to what they can handle and what they can't and set guidelines and be ready to explain the world. I truly am happy with my childhood, especially with my mom who once defended video games to other parents at the school board meeting. They were speaking against letting teens play video games. "Well at least, she ain't doing drugs or being drunk--- going around town late at night. She is right at home, safe, and having a good time" Sadly she lost a lot of ppl support and friends. My younger brother tho? It made my brother violent, extremely violent, and yelling, raging. So my family never stopped me from getting video games and neither to stop buying me games. My brother tho? They focused on getting him into sports instead. Parenting is important as also adapting to how your children react to things.

The Pictochat scare is probably my favorite one because of the absurdity of the situation. So let's go with their example. You're a kid in the back of the car with a DS. Are you going on Pictochat and coincidentally finding some predator within the DS's wireless communication range (reminder that you're in a car that will be spending most of the time moving) that is also using a DS and has Pictochat open to talk to you without your parent's knowledge? No, you're playing Mario & Luigi Partners in Time trying to defeat the final boss as your mother tries to get you out of the car to go to school because you're so close to the end and your child brain thinks you'll definitely have enough time to beat two bosses, one of which has two phases, back-to-back and watch the final cutscene in the 15 minutes it takes to get to school.

while unrealistic, the steelman postion, is someone could get a 3ds and slowly drive around neighborhoods and use picochat to get kids to either share security info so someone robs the home while ppl are away, or worse. is it doable yes, will kids willingly give out such info? idk maybe actman admitted to wanting to meet a stranger from online as a kid, and the solution to that is to be a good parent.

I'm one of the kids who's mom thought Pokémon was evil. Yes it was terrible. What made it worse was she saw a news report after I was already obsessed with one of the games, I was 6 damn gyms into the game and one day she's like "This is evil! I'm taking it" I tasted the sweet fruit but had it taken away from me. Anyway she was a drug addict anyway and my dad got me the newest game on the DS to make me feel better when she died of an OD, lmao.

My neighbors/friends dad was a cop I remember them going to church when I was young but they must have stopped. Well I remember when Harry Potter came out, everyone loved it and it must have been like the 2nd one by the time this happened. Asked my friends if they wanted to go to see the 2nd one with me and my mom but they were all bummed and said their mom heard it was anti Christian and was teaching evil witchcraft and stuff like that haha. Idk what internet forums she could have been on back then filling her head with that bs, maybe it was the news. It was weird for me to hear that because they weren't really an uptight family, they joked around a lot, didn't go to church anymore, cussed in front of their kids, even let them say words like ass, bitch, ect... I think the news was trusted much more back then and it was a time where supernatural stuff was still popular and people believed in it a little more.

He loved tech and video gaming and he knew more than the average person back then did about them. He called bullshit on all these stories so my gaming was a protected pastime as far as they were concerned. In the 80s my dad worked for the wall street journal in plant communications (later known as IT). Friday nights he would take me to work with him and let me play video games on the computers there.
