1:47:21 *”the world’s great, the world’s pretty good, what are you complaining about”* “That’s cope, that’s cope and it’s cope because we’re scared, we’re scared to do.. to be creative and to do something, because of, as you say, we know that idealistic projects often don’t turn out the way that they’re meant to turn out.”

Studebaker is very impressive, and I found this discussion absolutely outstanding. I took copious notes to reflect on, and have a copy of his book right next to my bed. Well done to you both!

As long as people (the working class) depend on tax revenue and wages for their economic well being, life will be a nightmare to one degree or another. The mobility of capital has enabled the state to appear impotent in its supposed obligation to provide charity to those in need. The truth is that the state has always represented the owners of capital, and therefore has been successful in creating the illusion of weakness. Had the state pushed back on capital's freedom of mobility across borders, democracy and the living conditions of the working class wouldn't be under such an attack. When Bretton Woods collapsed in the early 70's, the American state reacted by inverting its balance of payments so that US debt increased US wealth. This was done to pursue the interests of capital, not the interests of people, which is what the word 'democracy' is used as a proxy for. The Cold War was instrumental in creating the freedom capital has had to make its supremacy appear inevitable and welcomed. Benjamin is so right to say that the imagination of the working class cannot include revolutionary thoughts because of the Cold War "victories." I'm only 8:40 into the video, but had to say these things before I forget them. Wonderful interview. Ben is a bright spot in an otherwise very dark landscape.

Just came across your channel and have subscribed. Really interesting discussion with Studebaker touching on important topics. Downloaded a sample of the kindle edition of his book as well (but it’s damn expensive to buy in any format!!) and going through your other episodes. Thanks!

Why ask the guest about other authors and theorists, unless the guest brings them up or uses terms and concepts generally associated with them?

Studebaker's point about Plato's critique of democracies - specifically, about the role of "talkers" - calls to mind both my experiences of the labor movement as well as Michael Albert's framing of the "coordinator class," above all the point about their efforts to use the worker's movement. A very engaging discussion.

Smasher of a chat. Loving the murakami insight about a guilty poked nostalgia infecting boomers... i remeber having fizzy thoughts on such 30 years ago in a pub urinal in Sheoherds bush whilst piss/talking with an old boy. I have listened twice (whilst working) and will listen again. Good work. I think youses are on ladders having done some ballooning in your time... (like me 😂)

Towards 2:14:00 “repressive state vs changing society” - I agree that this needs revision. However, today “the state” in the global west seems to have been outdone by private entities, those we legally can incorporate. This cannot well be a dialectic between state and human subjects, without (re-) internalising the incorporated “subject” (it’s an object)? Isn’t it so that corporate power indeed is stateless, as we have legislated for _their_ liberties? Are we erroneously convinced into believing that corporate freedom _equates_ to freedom of “corpus realis”, humans and ecology - subordinated to “economy”?

1:43:37 if anything is genocidal, it’s your face right now, Ben, the group that killed and ended the Nazi regime single-handedly was the communist Soviet union - you lump them together like this is complete asinine
