The main thing you need to keep in mind when listening to GWAR (especially their earlier albums) is that they were writing each album as a chapter in the story of these intergalactic beings that were banished to Earth and are bent on destruction, sex, drugs, violence, and rock and roll to level of absurdity. Everything is to be taken as tongue in cheek, but they do make a lot of thinly veiled social commentary in the guise of over-the-top lyrics and story beats of the album. Conceptually, GWAR isn't a band of humans in silly costumes. When you approach it as listening to them as if they truly ARE their gimmick, then they make a lot more sense and they become even more fun. To paraphrase Oderus on an episode of Jerry Springer, "What is worse: to watch the evening news that is full of death and destruction and horrible things happening to the world... or listening to GWAR which totally makes fun of all of that?"

I've seen Gwar in concert over 20 times, and I've taken my son to see them every year since he turned 10 (6 shows)... One thing I can say about Gwar is that they're primarily metal with punk roots, but they've dabbled in just about every damn genre of music to one extent or another, even country and rap.

It's worth remembering Gwar's back story: they're aliens from another planet that crash landed in Antarctica. They met Sleazy P. Martini, who they were going to kill, but he got them addicted to crack, and became their manager, touring them around to make money for more crack. Their mission is to dominate, enslave, and kill humanity. They don't have mosh pits; they have slave pits. And they kill effigies on stage, and soak the crowd with blood. Best live shows ever.

Brings Back the Memories! I used like these two songs a lot in high school a lot. I love their energy, lot of bands try the mask thing but GWAR did it best and will probably always be the GOAT. A lot can be said about how much effort they put into designing their characters, the lore behind them, the stage props and effects. Plus the lyrics about nukes and America, it all makes more sense from the perspective of their intergalactic demon. I reckon' it's all in good jest

America Must Be Destroyed was the first album I ever owned on tape cassette. They were very underground at the time and nobody knew about them. They actually got kinda pissed off because all the censorship people were harassing 2 Live Crew and not them. In fact at that time there were alot of metal bands writing lyrics that would never fly today. Bands like Cannibal Corpse and "Stripped Raped and Strangled" you could hear on certain rock stations late at night only. From 1989-1992 the Censorship Bureau were much more focused on NWA and Public Enemy. Especially around the time the LA Riots went down.

You're right and that it was hard to get GWAR at Walmart but it was a non-issue at most of your local record shops. The record shop was great too because those people had no fucks to give about your age and completely ignored the parental advisory warnings. In fact most metalheads owe Tipper Gore a huge thank you, because we didn't buy shit unless it had that parental advisory label!
