The main thing you need to keep in mind when listening to GWAR (especially their earlier albums) is that they were writing each album as a chapter in the story of these intergalactic beings that were banished to Earth and are bent on destruction, sex, drugs, violence, and rock and roll to level of absurdity. Everything is to be taken as tongue in cheek, but they do make a lot of thinly veiled social commentary in the guise of over-the-top lyrics and story beats of the album. Conceptually, GWAR isn't a band of humans in silly costumes. When you approach it as listening to them as if they truly ARE their gimmick, then they make a lot more sense and they become even more fun. To paraphrase Oderus on an episode of Jerry Springer, "What is worse: to watch the evening news that is full of death and destruction and horrible things happening to the world... or listening to GWAR which totally makes fun of all of that?"

To paraphrase techno destructo in that same Jerry springer episode (as he holds up the styrofoam monkey wrench that’s supposed to be his arm) “You can take one look at us and know we’re real!”

I've seen Gwar in concert over 20 times, and I've taken my son to see them every year since he turned 10 (6 shows)... One thing I can say about Gwar is that they're primarily metal with punk roots, but they've dabbled in just about every damn genre of music to one extent or another, even country and rap.

GWAR has one of the best live shows ever. Plus when it's over the local gas stations and convince stores workers are confused when people come in at 1am covered in green and red liquids to get smokes and mixers at the end of a great night of metal. Shout out to Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh for being one of the best venues for all music but Metal, Punk and Rock in particular.

People overlook the musical and lyrical talent GWAR possesses, throughout their career. All because of the visuals and lyrical content. I was actually quite pleased with their music with Bishop after Dave died. Greatest thing about Dave... he sounded like Oderus looks. Like he could be from another planet. He made Canada proud.

@duogemstone
@duogemstone 3 жыл бұрын
@@rapfraud4958 true but that was always the plan, GWAR as a band could actually last for hundreds of years rotating in new members as needed and is what Dave wanted (from what I heard he was thinking of retiring from the band anyway). Is the new GWAR different then the old GWAR yeah buts it's still undeniably GWAR no matter how you look at it. all GWAR needs to be GWAR is good music and one hell of a stage show

Lyrics Gor-Gor Gor-Gor comes and sirens wail Mournful drone of babbling fail Thunderous gnashing firestorm Flames illuminate his form Gor-Gor comes and you must die Swats F-16s from the sky Admit you crave the gift he brings you Fall worship tyrant king, you Gor-Gor! Sow pestilent hate It shall obliterate The shadows of your long dead brothers And all the mutilated others Who died in waves, uniform To appease your bloodied hulking form Who broke through layers of molten strata To make the planet earth errata Take the chuld in champing jaws A pulping pile of frothing flaws This horrid mass shall give us pause At putrid rot fills gaping maws Gor-Gor! Gor-Gor big! Skulls are smashed and bones are bending Joints are popping, our claws are rending Groveling, sniveling, driveling horde To worship scaly overlord Apocalypse becomes creation Gor-Gor shall erase the nation Before you jump into his gizzard Fall and worship tyrant lizard Gor-Gor comes and you must die He swats the stealth down from the sky Admit you crave the gift he brings you Fall and worship tyrant king you Gor-Gor!

It's worth remembering Gwar's back story: they're aliens from another planet that crash landed in Antarctica. They met Sleazy P. Martini, who they were going to kill, but he got them addicted to crack, and became their manager, touring them around to make money for more crack. Their mission is to dominate, enslave, and kill humanity. They don't have mosh pits; they have slave pits. And they kill effigies on stage, and soak the crowd with blood. Best live shows ever.

Brings Back the Memories! I used like these two songs a lot in high school a lot. I love their energy, lot of bands try the mask thing but GWAR did it best and will probably always be the GOAT. A lot can be said about how much effort they put into designing their characters, the lore behind them, the stage props and effects. Plus the lyrics about nukes and America, it all makes more sense from the perspective of their intergalactic demon. I reckon' it's all in good jest

I have never before known the joy of seeing someone who isn’t in on the joke yet read GWAR lyrics. That was glorious. Thank you. It immediately made me think of 20 other songs that could have been so so much worse. When exterminating all life on earth is your stated goal, as it is GWAR’s, bringing back the bomb is really just about efficiency. They’ve been trying to get off this planet for thousands of years, so you can hardly blame them for getting ornery.

America Must Be Destroyed was the first album I ever owned on tape cassette. They were very underground at the time and nobody knew about them. They actually got kinda pissed off because all the censorship people were harassing 2 Live Crew and not them. In fact at that time there were alot of metal bands writing lyrics that would never fly today. Bands like Cannibal Corpse and "Stripped Raped and Strangled" you could hear on certain rock stations late at night only. From 1989-1992 the Censorship Bureau were much more focused on NWA and Public Enemy. Especially around the time the LA Riots went down.

This entire album is brutal Thrash Metal. Well, except the fusion jazz of "Have You Seen Me?" (seriously). My favorite Gwar album. Also, the song "Morality Squad" is all about Gwar and the PMRC. This entire album is a reaction from when Oderus went to jail for indecency. There is a full-length video to accompany this album "Phallus in Wonderland", which is about them putting Oderus' junk on trial for indecency.

You're right and that it was hard to get GWAR at Walmart but it was a non-issue at most of your local record shops. The record shop was great too because those people had no fucks to give about your age and completely ignored the parental advisory warnings. In fact most metalheads owe Tipper Gore a huge thank you, because we didn't buy shit unless it had that parental advisory label!
