Rich and I embark on our first century with the ICE VTX recumbent trikes and compare the experience to our rides on the same route with road bikes. Hey, Jason! Yep, I was really surprised by how far the autos would swing wide and away from us while on this ride. It's almost like having a super-power while you're out riding, especially when you're used to getting buzzed while riding a road bike. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching, John! I still ride my uprights, but the trike is a nice change and a really different type of ride. I compare it to the feeling of surfing on a two-wheeler vs a mini-Formula one car on the trike. :)

If you want more room in the lane, mount a chain tube Horizontally on the back of the seat frame, Make sure it is zipped with a slight bend (to act as friction) and insert a short flag pole (just long enough to poke out the right side of the tube) This flag pole and flag can be adjusted to push traffic further away from your left side.. I use to get buzzed, now they give huge amounts of room... I think that traffic/trucks think we are narrow bicycles, having a the horizontal flag extending an extra 1.5 feet on the left, makes you look wider and people notice you.. Cheers.

As for the US trip please look into keeping safe, I've seen a few folk talking about their experiences on the road over there and compared with Australia, I'd say it's more of a risk, more cars on the road, more lazy inconsiderate drivers etc etc

Thank you. So enjoyed seeing this. You both are so inspiring. My husband and I took our trikes down to Saint Augustine to get out of the Michigan winter. The cobblestone forced us to slow down to take in the sights and put us front row for our own unique history tour. So great to find this new way to be in the world on our trikes and the treasures they have unlocked. I have knee and neck issues and my husband has back and hand issues and this is our physical therapy/rehab. It’s working. Keep inspiring with your beautiful creations. Kudos to you. That is quite an accomplishment there.

You should have the blinky lights on your helmet and the flag as that is far more visible. I just bought a delta trike really cheap old and obviously not used as the brake pads have no wear pattern. So good for snow, ice , patches that get in my way and yes they are reviewed as 20 mph top speed before it gets squirrely . Back to the Rans Rocket or the Giro A20 in the spring. Wish we had your bike paths up here.

Do the drivers there generally respect the right of cyclists to be on the road? Over here they seem to think we’re just getting in their way. :)

@@bikestrikesrazors Yes, I will say that 99% of the drivers are cyclists too or at least have been or have children/family members who cycle every day. So there a kind of symbiosis there between cyclists and motorists. Let me say that in and around medium sized-big cities the biking infrastructure is excellent, biking lanes everywhere, but when you take the small roads outside the cities, you will be using the same road as motorists. The funny thing I noted too was that, even some motorists on opposite traffic will either hold to their right side, as far as they can, or even stop all together to let me pass by. Then, we great each other, with a friendly gesture and a smile. I joke about the extra safety a Trike has given me, tell my 2 wheels bicycling friends, that "maybe the reason why the motorists are so careful, giving me a wide berth, is that they think I am a disabled person, driving a special need tricycle...". You know there are very few Trikes in Denmark. When I stop to rest, even when I drove the 2 wheeled bike + trailer, it has happened many times that a motorist man or woman will stop and ask if everything is OK, if I needed any help. People are very friendly and open in Denmark. We do care for each other. Have a good day and keep on Triking! P.S. By the way I am 80 years old and I have 65 kg gear with me when I go on tour mid April to mid October. No EL Assist. Sleep in Shelters or tent, sometimes in paying Camping Grounds in my tent with tarp extension, foldable chair, foldable tabouret and foldable table and a solar charger-power banks, so I am self sufficient when it comes to energy needs.

Not too long ago, my brother and I were taking our trikes up a local mountain (Mt. Diablo) when we were passed by a couple on road bikes who kept telling us what an inspiration we were. I couldn't figure out what they were talking about, but when we caught up to them later at a rest area, and stood up and walked over to a water fountain, they looked shocked that we could walk. Hey, if it's going to get cars to give me a wider berth, I don't care what they think. :) I'm going to have to get over Denmark with a bike or trike one of these days. The early morning cinematography is beautiful guys! When the sun is low to the horizon, with long shadows, things always look so inviting. It is so peaceful on those wonderful cycling paths. Cobblestones and rigid trikes ... yep, you're right, not a great mix for sure, haha. I love the autumn colored trees ... nice to see them this late in the year (trees are pretty much bare up on the Oregon Coast already). It's nice to see that the governing bodies have built so many great cycling paths, many of which are isolated from the auto traffic. Speaking of biking or triking alongside of a freeway, in the State of Oregon, you can actually ride on the shoulders of freeways legally, with the exception of a couple of areas, notably in the Medford area of I-5. It is amazing to me that you guys know where to find all these little paths that get you through the insanity of humanity so well, without much traffic hassle. One thing about the Sacramento area is the flatness, which allows high mileage rides like this, covering a lot of ground quickly, where the VTXs are perfect. Yes, from a physiological point of assessment, road bike are definitely not so kind to the human body, leading to all the very well-known and common issues that riders encounter ... trikes are quite different in that regard - that's one big reason I liked my Easy Racers Gold Rush recumbent bike, the best of both worlds. I like your music - sounds like a soundtrack from an old classic movie, perhaps a western at times. That route that avoided the cobblestones on Front Street was smoother, but there sure was a lot of pedestrian traffic on it (and you didn't get to see the train displays). Thanks for sharing this ride guys! steve

Hey, Andrew! The first trikes we tried were purchased second hand through a Craiglist ad. In fact, almost all the trikes we've owned in the past twenty years were purchased used. If you do decide to give a trike a try, keep an eye out for a good used deal on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or in the Bentrider Online classifieds. Usually, you can pick up a nice trike in excellent condition for around half the new price, but don't buy anything that looks like it was ridden hard and put away wet. There are plenty of used trikes out there in barely ridden condition, so hold out for a nice one!

So happy when you took your flag off Rich , it was driving me a little nuts lol , I mean you bought one of the most expensive trikes out there and a lot of why it's expensive is all the engineering going into the Aero-d . I wondered if Joe could feel it when he was riding behind , it sure is nice seeing you guys get out in the winter , it's a hard thing here in Seattle because it rains so much, winter rides are rare and unplanned. I know we talked about this before , but I sure would like to see you try a wheel cover or disc on the rear and see what your impressions are , I've gone full Aero and have covers on the front wheels inside and outside surface and now sporting a trispoke carbon fiber rear wheel from Ican , rear wheel alone made a big difference not just that it didn't slow down as much the thing I noticed is it's much easier to pedal as you arnt hitting the air with and egg beater . People think just about passing thru the wind and discount or don't think at all how much resistance comes from spokes churning. Great videos Guys you should be a sponsored channel . By far you guys are my favorite Trike Documentors.

Hi Jason! I much prefer riding "sans" flag, but the roads on the early part of the ride required as much visibility as possible (if just to make me feel better). The length I cut my flagpole causes some crazy oscillations of the flag. Reminds me of a fishing lure. I will eventually put some wheel covers on the front and when I wear that back wheel out, I'll be looking into one of those trispoke carbon wheels. Something to look forward to! :)

Love my Cattrike. Folks think that recumbents - 2/3/4 wheel - are something fairly new. Nope. First recumbent design was the Normal Bike from an engineering professor in Switzerland in the 1890s. Called the normal bike because the riding position seemed more normal, like a chair. A number of designs followed. In France in the early '30s, Charles Mochet was building velocars and decided to enter into competition with his "velo couché" the recumbent racer bike "velo-velocar". It was comfortable, and much more aerodynamic. Mid-level racer F Faure beat the s**t outta the top-tier diamond frame riders in every single race of all distances. Broke a bunch of records. The recumbent was the better technology. Previously Mochet's design had been green-lighted by the race governing bodies, but after embarrassing everybody Mochet's bike was reassessed and suddenly disallowed. The UCI and UVF rules were rewritten to forbid all recumbent racers. Why? Because the diamond-frame bike companies wanted it that way. If they had allowed it and the companies gone to more recumbents, that's what most everybody would have been riding since. Fastest road bike in the world today is the Cruzbike Vendetta V20.

I remember Kings! That was the place with the Lotto posters on the walls, right? Speaking of great restaurants that are no longer around, I was wondering why you ate at In-N-Out and not at Murder Burger when you reached Davis. Then I did some research and learned Redrum Burger closed in 2019.

Hey, Jim! Yep, we spent an afternoon at Kings with you, Rich, me and I think Steve and Jeff. Was everyone there? Yeah, unfortunately Murder Burger couldn't survive when all kinds of competition popped up in that area. Not only do you have the In' n Out, but now there's all kinds of fast food right over the freeway there. One of the sad things happening in America- All the mom & pop places are closing shop because there's no way to compete with forty Chicken McNuggets for $9.50 or two Whoppers for $6.00. :(

Colder air, being denser, offers more resistance, though I don't know if that's significant at cycling speeds.

I'd like to see something like this but on dirt/gravel roads, Trike vs MTB vs Gravel Bike. Someday i'll finish building my trike and the idea is to "replace" my MTB for those long rides on the countryside
@bikestrikesrazors

That's a good idea! These trikes wouldn't be great in the gravel and dirt. Need to get a fat tire trike with some suspension and good ground clearance!

@@bikestrikesrazors Glad to read that! No need much for gravel roads actually, just some wider tyres 🙂
