I’m 82 years old and been riding my Sun EZ-3 recumbent delta trike for twenty years, and still riding. There is no bike more comfortable than a recumbent trike. For us old guys the delta trikes sit further off the ground, which makes getting on and off much easier. Good video.

A really fabulous, informative video. This should be “required viewing” for any potential trike buyer/rider. You touch on virtually every point. Your years of experience can save the novice from making bad decisions and guiding them to be knowledgeable to even know the right questions to ask while shopping for a trike. I suggest that you in some how get merchants/vendors to get their prospective customers to take the time to watch this video before buying. Good work!

all the following relates to touring style DRUM BRAKES: The Stormy Archer drumbrakes can over heat enough to warp and long steep hills. HYDRAULIC DISK BRAKES if you know and really good at maintaining Hydraulic brakes fine, if not then steer clear of them. I have owned three trikes and I would ride any of them without a Head Rest. I just have to think of a long climb to know why. BLOWOUT I blew a rear tire doing about 90 km/hr. It was a bit wiggly but I brought her safely to a stop. I figured I had a slow lead and the tire side wall got taken out when I hit a bit of a pot hole. ROLLING I have rolled a trick three times at slow speed doing something stupid. Going down hill on a windy paved road at high speed I use my inside brake to determine if I am leaning out enough. If it easily skids I am not. SAFETY: Visibility is key. bright clothes, lights, flags and hand signals and most importantly use your eyes and your mirrors.

I used to race these at school with carbon/Kevlar bodys in a 24hour endurance race the speeds you colud go for hours were insane sometimes upwards of 80kph for and hour or two then you wolud swap riders and normaly tires aswell we had meny blow outs they were alot worse on the race trikes as we used independent front brakes no rear to help with cornering insanely fun

Nice video, I have 20+ years on trikes, and couldn't do any better. For a nice general purpose trike, I found the Catrike Expedition, to be an excellent choice. The 37 degree seat angle, along with the 26 in. rear wheel, is an excellent match. It seems to me that experienced riders tend to end up riding either ICE, or Catrikes. I hope a lot beginning trike riders see this video. Thank you.

I thoroughly enjoy my Greenspeed Magnum. It offers 5 seat heights, an aluminum frame, foldability, excellent tracking and drum brakes, with its adjustable upright seating and 2" tires, it is much slower than the HP Velotechnic I owned previously. I loved the HP but after 2 knee replacements I had too much difficulty getting on and off. Now I am a slow 82 yo rider who enjoys a moderate ride with full view of the scenery.

That may change now that Wiz Wheels has bought Greenspeed. The only Greenspeed I ever had a chance to spend time on, was KrispySteve's, and he thinks they're the best thing since sliced bread. Since he is 81, it must be a generational thing.

I’m really enjoying the overview and your coverage of components - well done! Quick question: what nylon bags are hanging off the rear of the seat on one of the trikes? I’m trying to find bags for a 2021 CaTrike Trail to hang off the back of the seat frame, leaving my installed rack available for panniers. I’m finding that I’m not really happy with a trunk bag on top of the rack. I really like the Arkel side bags for CaTrike models but Arkel responded that the Trail-specific bags won’t work for my newer trike because of an earlier CaTrike design change. I appreciate your feedback and thanks again for the informative and entertaining videos.

Geezer here... I was once on the staff of Bicycling and Bicycle Guide Magazines (1980's)... one of the more enjoyable jobs in my crazy life. Good job. I was just given a trike by a friend who because of aging issues, stopped riding. I've ridden it before because I had a shoulder injury. The trike let me keep riding. I always ride with cleats... thanks for the heads-up about riding without. One thing you didn't mention was wheelbase... curious bike nerd that I am. I've been watching videos of touring trike riders... I wonder if there are companies that make touring racks, bags, and packs. There was one guy who started in Denmark rode to Sweden (a ferry helped with the wet parts). He had amazing panniers and bags.

Hi Thomas and thanks very much for the comment! Joe and I freelanced for a bunch of magazines back in the late 80's early 90's and it was a lot of fun. I don't remember ever hearing anything about trike wheelbase as a function of trike touring vs non-touring trikes. It's usually dependent on how low back the seat recline is (needing to move the back wheel back to make room for the seat. My VTX (which is a racing style trike) has a really long wheelbase to make room for the 700 rear wheel and the super low seatback. The touring trikes are more upright (like my GTO) so the wheel tucks under the seat. Trike manufactures also seem to move the front wheels closer together when trying to make a faster trike. I guess that cuts down on the front-end wind resistance. There are many places that make bags for trikes. Radical Designs makes great, but expensive bags.

@@bikestrikesrazors Thanks for the tip about bags. To me, a longer wheelbase would afford a smoother ride, be better at cornering, less squirrely.... I acquired really nice bicycles in the 80's... and have no need to buy the latest/greatest. A late friend offered me his expensive carbon bike when he was preparing to leave this plain of existence... I turned it down. Suggested a still athletic ex of his, whose bike I tuned up... she really needed a much better bike. I'm still not sure what kind of riding I'll be doing on my trike... but I've been inspired about rail trail touring, watching videos by some older gal. She tows a trailer that has to weigh at least 60 lbs... she has electric boost... is quite the techno-wizard. As I age, staying active is becoming much more important...

I think the 80's may have been the "golden age" of steel bikes. I do have a carbon Calfee, but mostly I ride steel. Hey, Doren! I wish I could do a suspension vs non-suspension video, but I've never had the opportunity to try a full suspension trike! I will say this- From what I know it's going to greatly depend on the types of roads you're riding on. If you're going to be riding on smooth paved bike trails, or well paved roads, I'd say suspension is an unnecessary, heavy and expensive addition. But if you're going to be riding on messed up pavement, chip seal or other rough roads, it could be seen as absolutely mandatory. I'm lucky in that the trails and roads around here are very well maintained with great, smooth pavement, so I've never had to consider suspension. Outstanding primer on the topic. One thing I was hoping you would have addressed is pedal effort relative to a two wheeler. I had to invest in an electric bike because I no longer had the leg strength to ride a regular bicycle on anything other than flat ground, even with a multi-gear drivetrain. Thoughts?

Hey, Rodney! On flat ground, it’s all going to be a matter of gearing. A trike will likely be heavier than a bike, but as long as you’re in a low gear you shouldn’t need a lot of power to the pedals to get going. In fact, gearing is really your secret weapon for making sure you never have to put a lot of effort into your pedaling. Just make sure that no matter what you buy, it has some nice, low gearing. Then again, lots of folks are buying trikes with electronic assist, which makes pedaling much easier no matter what (You already know from your e-bike). I haven’t had a chance to try a trike with e-assist yet, but I’m certainly curious about what it’s like.

Another issue with drum vs disc: brake steer. My first trike was a cheap Trident Spike with direct steering and less than top-tier components. Unless the discs were perfectly adjusted, a hard stop would make the trike pivot on the locked-up wheel and sometimes throw me to the pavement. The drums on my Ice TNT modulate much better and always allow me to stop in a straight line. Regarding sharing the road with cars, the dangers are more than “perceived,” especially if you are riding urban streets. It is hard for motorists to see you sitting down that low, especially if there are parked cars blocking their line of sight. I have a 6-foot mast with a big-ass flag and flashing front and rear lights mounted at motorist’s eye level. Even then, they miss seeing me sometimes.

Very true. There are some roads around here where I just won't ride my trike. Too dangerous that low to the ground. I always assume nobody sees me even with a flag and lights. The worst brake steer I ever experienced was with the very first generation Catrike pocket. Man, that was a fun trike, but you better brake with even pressure or you were up on one wheel fast. They took care of that issue shortly after that.

Good trike brands engineer brake steer out with front end geometry. The Greenspeed ads tell you that you can use one side brake to pull up fine although both brakes will do the job with half the effort!

I want to construct a trike because it is almost impossible to purchase a trike in South Africa. I will not use it for speed but reasonably sedate touring . It may be a delta because I am very worried about ending up with my foot being sucked under the forward cross bar of a tadpole trike. ..I do not want to use clip in shoes for various reasons . do you know of any delta vs tadpole comparisons or 'foot suck" statistics/videos .

Hi Pierre! If you don't want to "clip in" or use straps or some kind of foot retention system ( there are a few), then I would recommend the Delta trike. I've tried riding a Tadpole sans clips and it's very hard to make sure you always have proper pressure on the pedals to make sure your feet don't fall off, especially when you hit a bump in the road. I didn't get "leg suck", but I have known folks that that has happened to. The Delta will get you higher up for better visibility. Thanks for watching!

Take a look at "Heel Slings" for foot retention. I've heard good things about them, from riders who have issues, with SPDs etc. Atomic Zombie has plans for Delta and Tadpole trikes.

Hey, Xander! Almost all trikes these days are being offered with an E-assist option. As far as I know, there aren’t any trikes being offered with round steering wheels but the standard steering bar on a trike is actually much easier to use than a round steering wheel would be. Thanks for watching!

Can you go faster on the flat with a larger rear wheel?

Some people say it's easier to hold speed with a larger wheel, but it's difficult to quantify. The trikes with large rear wheels are usually more aerodynamic and lighter as they're built for speed. My VTX (with a 700 rear wheel) is faster than my GTO, but it's way more aero, lighter and the seat is positioned to be able to get more force to the pedals. Greenspeed was a great champion of fast trikes with small rear wheels. Their "Aero" was reported to be very fast and it has a 20" in the back.

Could we see some of the video cover areas where there is some traffic rather than on deserted roads. This would I feel give people more feeling of what it feels like to ride under normal conditions most people live in areas where they have to contend with traffic like most people do on a day to day basis My feeling is that if you have to transport the trike to a place you can ride it kind of defeats the purpose of having one and adds to the cost. not everyone has the vehicle suitable foe transporting the trike to a place to ride it

Hi and thanks very much for your comment! I ride my trike and bikes (I'm on a road bike at least as much if not more than my trikes) for recreation and fun. For me, that means staying as far away from heavily trafficked areas as possible. I'm very lucky to have a beautiful 30-mile bike trail nearby and road routes with very limited traffic. If I HAD to ride in heavily trafficked areas, I would forgo the trike and probably forgo bike riding altogether. Who needs to breath car exhaust, deal with the noise and get pelted by gravel as they drive by?

How does temperature affect the trike and you?

Cold doesn't affect me much, as I can bundle and layer to stay warm. Heat, on the other hand, can take a toll, as riding on very hot days requires energy for my body to attempt cooling. Accordingly, I try and take it easy on hot days. I haven't noticed a difference in the performance of the trike in any weather. It's always happy to go as fast as I can peddle. Thanks for watching!

On trikes with deep reclined seating, does your neck get sore after a while?

It can if you're not used to it. After a few rides, your neck muscles build up. I still have to use my headrest for support on the start of some rides before my neck gets used to the forward bend. :) That being said, I had set the recline on my 2-wheeled T-bone recumbent so far back that my forward craned neck turned to Jello on a 60-mile ride. :)

Small rear wheel? Or big rear wheel? My biggest weakness on my mountain bike is climbing hilly streets. But I'm looking at a trike now. Given a fairly standard range of gearing options, doesn't a small rear wheel give you more climbing torque? As you mentioned, I understand that it would be at the expense of top speed. But that's not an issue for me.

From riding trikes with big and small rear wheels, I'm convinced it all comes down to gearing. That said, if you're looking for more speed, there seems to be some consensus that a larger wheel will hold higher speeds more easily, and a smaller wheel will be better at climbing. Of course, I have no data to back up any of this, only second-hand hearsay. I seem to climb just as well with a large rear wheel and go just as fast with a small rear wheel. Hey, John! Yeah, it really depends on what type of roads/trails you'll be riding on. I'm lucky here in that the trails and roads are very well maintained and there's no chip-seal or rough pavement, so I've never needed to think about full suspension. I do know folks who live in areas with roads that are just "messed-up", with lots of rough pavement, so if you're in that kind of environment, suspension is almost a necessity. If you're planning on long touring and you really don't know what kind of roads you'll be up against, you can consider full suspension a safety net, 'cause at some point out there you will come across nasty pavement. Of course, there are ways to inexpensively get some passive suspension and road deadening on a non-suspended trike. Just putting a set of large, balloon-like tires on, like the Schwalbe Big Apples and running them at lower pressures, can do a lot to absorb road vibration.

May I asked what your age is? I am 70 years of age, 6 foot 3 inches and have had a demo of the catrike dumont with e-assist at laidback cycles parking lot a few years ago. I am looking for comfort and speed at this age...do you think the dumont trike is a good fit or is there another one that you might recommend to me that might fit the bill for me even better. Also looking a fold-up type trike since I own a Honda Accord 2008.

Hi Michael! I'm 58. If you need a folder, the Dumont is a great choice. If you're getting the e-assist, you don't have to worry about how speedy the trike is as the motor will help greatly. If you didn't need a folder and you could rack your trike on your car and you're set on a Catrike, I'd be looking at the Catrike Expedition. Lots less money and a faster trike. I'm partial to ICE Trikes, so I'd be looking seriously at an ICE Sprint Tour X if you needed a folder. About the same price as the Dumont. If you are interested in checking out a Sprint, Alphabent in Sacramento probably has one to demo.

I'm here to basically rebuild this kind of bike...I've recently become paralyzed and was given a catrike evolution (or something like that)... missing a rear wheel, has no seat and cables are loose and ratty at first glance. I was literally given this bike an hour ago...I found a 5 digit number on frame bottom (under where seat should be) is that the serial number? To easily find parts? Have no idea of the year of this bike And here's the edit...what's with the small 18" bar going nowhere with the small 3" bar pointing (driver's side)...can't wrap my head around what it'd be for

Hey! I’m guessing you have a Catrike Expedition there. Does it look like it would take a 26” rear wheel? Yes, that number would likely be the trike’s serial number. Where are you located? If you could find a good recumbent shop close by, they’d be able to get you sorted out. Without seeing the trike, it would be hard for me to know exactly which parts you’re describing.

That number is the serial number of the trike. Register it with Catrike, they warranty their frames forever. Only two people have ever had their frames replaced. The closest recumbent shop to you, I can think of, is Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point WI USA. They have great customer service, and are a Catrike dealer.

Hey, Brenda! There’s a lot of crossover in trike types and truth be told, almost any trike can be used for touring. Even the ICE VTX can handle a rear rack and bags BUT certain trikes will be more suited to touring. Off hand, I’d say that trikes with a more upright seat might be better as you’d be able to take in the sights better, and a heavier, more robust trike with full suspension would be better for hauling heavy, full bags and handling any bad pavement you might come across. The secret is to keep a close eye on the used market. Every so often a great deal will turn up on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I’ve seen lots of great trikes, in great shape, sell for less than half the new price.
