I use to fly the Newark to Changi route in the early 2000s on A340s. Depending on the winds and routing it would take 17-22 hours. One time I slept for about 10 hours, didn’t drink any water and got sick from dehydration (alcohol may have been involved). I would love to do it on the 350 … bet it’s alot better with these modern airliners with improved ventilation, significant lower altitude cabin pressure, and humidifiers.

I wish I could have had a chance to fly the old A340's back when they were still around -- but the A350 is undoubtably a much better aircraft. Though yeah -- water helps lol. Thanks for watching!

I've never yet had a below average flight on SIA but it has to be said that aside from the premium economy seat and cloth napkins with meals, it was indistinguishable from economy class. The meals and service were exactly the same.
@TheAirliner2 жыл бұрын
I would agree -- SQ's premium economy is certainly a good product; but I wouldn't call it close to the best premium eco product by any means. Although considering it is the lowest class of service on *this* flight; and that they charge near-economy fares for this route -- you could also consider this a really good (like world's best good) economy class.
@g00nther2 жыл бұрын
@@TheAirliner In some other SIA flight review, I remember someone commenting that some airlines implement premium economy as an upgrade from economy, whilst others implement it as a downgrade from business, so they retain more of the business class feel. awesome video. i also flew singapore airlines back in feb 2020, just as covid was starting to hit. from sfo to singapore then to manila. the sfo to sg we flew a similar plan, a-350. the sg to manila, we flew the 787. and much like yours, it was a very pleasant flight. except for the the first 3 hours or so after leaving san francisco. it was soooooooo turbulent. anywhere the captain takes the plane, it was turbulent, 35,000; 36,000; 37,000 even 40,000. but over all, it was good. it was just so long. my principle when flying long haul, always aisle. and on that flight, i probably got the best seat for me. the last aisle seat on the left side of the plane. luckily, the middle seat was vacant so the other passenger was seated beside the window. i also enjoyed their meals, especially the buns. when we got to singapore, i was pleasantly surprised to see it was almost empty. i breezed thru immigration in like 5 mins and i was out. my friend met me and we went straight to the "the jewel." on my way back to san francisco, again, i was surprised to see that there was hardly any people. but then again, covid was already starting to hit many places and places were starting to get strict. but over all, i would not mind flying with singapore airlines again.

I once flew 17 hours non-stop from Los Angeles to Bangkok Thailand! I was trying to save 2-3 hours on a non-stop flight but it was pure torture in economy class! This trip was in 2008 on an Airbus A340-500. Eventually, this non-stop flight ceased and now there is a stop in Seoul Korea.

Huh - I had no idea that route even existed - but I would have loved to try it! This flight -was a huge timesaver and I would love to see more like it (including maybe reinstating LAX to bangkok???) but I doubt there are many routes of such far distances that have the demand between them that Singapore & New York do.
@Jojoboogie2 жыл бұрын
There was not much demand on this route plus THA have been downgraded by the FAA to category 2 so they can't fly to the US. THA operated LAX-BKK and JFK- BKK thus the non-stop flights but since other airlines now fly the route, they will have to do a layover at their respective hubs. The 340 is a far cry from the 350 so maybe you'll have a different experience this time around.

The mini bar at the rear of the A350 is a lot smaller than the one in the A340-500’s that SQ used to use on this flight. Also, as you point out, the food choice offered there is small. I remember on the A340 there was fresh fruit and muffins that the crew would heat for you.
@TheAirliner2 жыл бұрын
I never had a chance to fly on the old A340's - but I believe this -- although I would wonder what the bar looks like in business class (if there is one!) as the A340's were configured with only business class.
@Bellakelpie2 жыл бұрын
@@TheAirliner The 5 aircraft were 9V-SGA- through to SGE . They were only configured all Business towards at the end of their time with SQ. In 2006, when I flew Singapore/Newark ( The non stop flights went to Newark and the one stop flights via Frankfurt went to JFK) and returned Los Angeles/Singapore, (same flight times) They were Business/Premium Economy with the split starting at the 3rd (from the front) door. So basically 65/35%. The layout in P/E was 2-3-2 and Business was 2-2-2. The P/E return fare was Sin $1225. (High for those days.) The secret to flying in Premium Economy in the A340-500's was to book the 1st row of seats on either side, which was an Emergency Exit row, the row being right on the just mentioned 3rd door on each side of the cabin, which i did for both the outbound and return sectors. On the outbound flight, aided by the young Sikh man who sat next to me, we measured "our" leg room and it was 86 inches, (7 foot 2) or 2m 13.3 cms. But the downside of traveling in those seats was that they were also the coldest in the cabin, due to having nothing around them and their proximity to the door. But having been forewarned, I took a windcheater to wear. The mini bar length was 3 window spaces on each side of the cabin at the back and it was next to the centrally located rear galley. Behind the galley there was a large open area of which ran 4 toilets and the access to the cabin crews private rest compartment. That open area acted as an overflow space and became a sort of meeting area where quite a few passengers stood around, talking to the crew on duty and other passengers, as they drank and ate. Think of it as an "Aerial Pub." There was another identically laid out one for Business class right at the front. Passengers were encouraged to get up and move around during the flight, as a way of combating DVT. I spent around 8 hours chatting away down there on each flight. I remember one American gent said he got a really good deal as he was learning to speak Mandarin and the crew on duty gave him a 2 hour Mandarin class into the bargain. The actual routes flown were interesting. Depending on weather, the return flights sometimes flew straight up over Canada, over the pole and down over Central Asia and other times over Greenland then across Britain and Europe. The route to Los Angeles was up over the Bering Sea and returned straight across the Pacific Ocean, flying north of the Hawaiian Islands to Guam and then straight over the Philippines. SQ did claim that they actually, lost money on each flight, even when it was all Business and had a high load factor. (Most flights were booked out,) so they stopped the service until more economical to run aircraft became available. Like you said on your video, it is the best way to get to/from the USA from Singapore and look forward to doing it again now that the world is slowly returning to normal

My longest flight to date has been 13 hours. I felt as if I’d reached my limit. I don’t think I could manage a flight from JFK/Newark to Singapore or Sydney.

When you have two lines of captions you need to keep them longer on the screen for us to read. In some cases you were a bit hasty.
