I was a Screw for in excess of twenty years and I used to love it, absolutely love it when the lads decided enough was enough and made the decision to change, which usually meant getting clean. Those in the uniforms can become institutionalised and I too have left that world behind (albeit from different sides of the keys) As a Scouser myself I left home aged 15 and understand (to a certain degree) the temptations out there all too accessible and equally available. I could have very easily followed a similar path to you and others commenting here Bill but fortunately it was the gym that was my drug ( and I don't mean the juice although regrettably in my youth I succombed to the pronobol and dianobol filled syringes). Just want to say lad, if this story as well as the others posted will impact just one person and after watching and hearing you makes such a positive impact that they decide enough is enough then well in Bill. Credit to you too Bill and the way Joe has a role model in you is inspirational. Send him my best. Take care lad.

Hello Billy. Just want to add to the congratulations already expressed. I worked in addictions myself for many years and I met some genuinely nice, but very damaged people. I learned more by listening to them and never tried to tell them about addiction as they lived it. We used an intuitive recovery model, which tried to explain how choices are made and how to take ownership of them, to empower people to make good ones. Sadly few ever really escape their demons because the demons control their reactions to life, rejection and challenges. They self sabotage because of many reasons. You seem to have learned how to cope with yours and you show great insight. I genuinely wish you all the success you hope for and send my best wishes to you. Great podcast too. Scousers are great story tellers and have a realness to them. Keep going mate... what is there behind you that was any good to you?

Liking this format Billy. I'm 17 years clean last month and I still have those racing thoughts, not about gear just , well not peace of mind, but had fair share of trauma also...so just put it down as thats my thought process. I did methadone scripts, worse than the gear for me..did my rattle for 2 month once not even on bang up, in the end paid £5k august 2003 went into detox5 did 2 years clean was on naltrexone for a year... met a girl, married, good job... and she had a miscarriage (would of been her 3, would of been my 1st child) that sent me over and I relapsed for 5 months... was only when found out she was pregnant again that I stopped that week, was with Subutex and been clean from then on. Never really I have ever done it for me, long story but just never loved myself enough to do it for myself, grandparents yes, missus yes, kids yes... never did recovery for me...weird that... Keep at it Billy very thought provoking. Cheers.

@@Paulie_____ Best luck with it all mate...I used kratom too get clean was like a miracle ..took it then next day I couldn't work out what was different..I was sat there munching a sarnie about 3pm...I cant put my finger on what's different about my day then I realised I hadn't took me pills I was on all the pills really bad 100s a day sometimes various opiate pills and liquid morphine n tramadol and Df118s dihydrocodiens and I used too crush the shop bought codeines and mix into water n drink the top bit n leave the paracetamol at the bottom but even that sometimes 4/5 box's a day which is like 150 pills worth with all the rest on top...but anyway I'm sat there eating this sarnie and I realised that by about 9am I should have been in bits on the withdrawl as hadn't took pills like 14 hours or something I shouldn't be sat there at 3pm munching a sarnie feeling perfectly fine appetite still there felt normal...and that was it for me..took it for couple month then stopped it job done...later on Down the line I decided would be worth continuing with the kratom just a little tea or 2 a day too take all me nerves n anxiety n pain relief and sleep aid I just thought the benefits were worth it as I've always suffered with all the usual stuff insomnia was bad and just 100 things like yourself by sounds off it...lots off loss n grief and never really been able too socialise properly unless really trust a person my nerves wouldn't let me could barley sit in a pub for 5 minuits...but yh good luck mate your only young don't let the gear temp ya there's plenty other choices out there if you really need too take something if head goes mad there is safer cheaper non life wrecking alternatives out there I've found lots things that if head in bad place can use and will do the job, your not gonna get the buzz like gear but yh plenty other choices if you can't handle tea total but that is the best way,👍👍....edit my mistake I thought you said you were bloody 17 🤣🤣 I thought crikey this kids been through alot lol...17 years clean you ment yh my bad...still best off luck mater

Thanks again Billy. Can I ask you - wasn't Methadone the hardest drug to pack in for you? I honestly wish I'd never started . . but then what would have happened if I didn't. I'm trying to get on a similar path as you but feel totally stuck and lost, to be honest. Take care, Pete 🏴

That was great. Great story and it all turns round after meeting the big guy in the speedos in the steam room. I often wonder when going through recovery do u ever get to the stage where you never need to talk about ur feelings again like regular people.
