As a black woman I was super thrilled to see a non-black hairstylist being so proficient with black hair. The negative reaction you read is such bullsh*t, especially since these are the same type of people who whine and moan and complain that "black people have limited places to go to get there hair done in some areas." But when you actually find non-black people wanting to expand their knowledge to better service us, then it's "OMG WHY ARE THEY COPYING US, AND OMG CULTURAL APPROPRIATION BLAH BLAH BLAH" So many people just want to be miserable and have something to be mad over and cry racism about. So Fing stupid, I hope the woman braiding the hair in the video gives two craps about what anyone says and isn't upset by the reaction - or worse, stops braiding hair because some social reject on twitter whined about CA.

I am a mom of 5 kids who are black. I am white. I certainly did not have enough money to send my kids to a braider. I learned how to do it on my own. Not to mention it was a way to connect with kids. I tell you, though, the only people that had a problem with me being a white mom with black kids were black women. Certainly not the majority of black women, but it was only black women who have had a problem. Rediculous. I choose love first, not hair.

I would have trouble keeping my mouth shut. I’m so over ignorant, selfish people. Just the other day, I’m only slightly ashamed to admit, I went over to a neighbors apt, after her dogs were out on the porch barking from 630a - 12p, then 430-830 and they were still going when I walked my dog at 11 and I could see they were home the whole time and it wasn’t the first time and it’s driving my 6mo old puppy batty not understanding wtf is going on. At 11 I lost it and went and rang the bell and got some lame excuse. I know that’s a long example but it just shows how selfish and idiotic people are everywhere and I’m generally a patient and understanding person, I’m a nurse by trade, but if I can get pushed to my limits at this point and snap like that, it’s no wonder we see people doing it all over. I just can’t understand why people don’t consider others at all anymore. Sorry for the rant. 🙈

My cousin adopted a lovely young lady 15 years ago who happens to be black. My cousin is not. It took her a long time to find ANYone who would teach her how to manage her daughters hair because she was white and should not have adopted a black child! i’m from singapore and one of the biggest culture shocks i experienced after coming to the west is that i’m not allowed to share/experience another race’s or even my own culture. we have four major races in singapore, chinese, malay, indian and caucasian, and we literally celebrate racial harmony (there’s a school holiday for that). i used to go to my indian neighbour’s house on racial harmony day so her parents could help me with the traditional indian costume that i would wear to school that day and it’s such a beautiful experience and just made me fall in love with ethnic clothing and it’s history. sharing of ethnic cultures is so normalised in singapore that there’s no such thing as culture appropriation among the different races. it’s sad that i can’t do this here :(

I used to teach hair through history at colleges. I remember someone in the class who was black saying it was wrong for white people to wear braids and deadlocks because it was appropriating Black culture. I pointed out with references throughout various points in history where braids and dreadlocks were used by various cultures including Nordic countries and Roman etc. The student got mad, and said “don’t come at me with facts” 😂

For nearly 40 years, I have chosen to have my hair done in a "black" shop. The hairstylists have always done the best work with my fine yet very thick and somewhat unruly hair. When I moved from the DC suburbs to a small Texas town, the salons hairstylist was surprised when I first came in. We became friends. My mother and daughter also had their hair styled at this shop. The first person in my life that was my best friend in kindergarten was a black girl named Queen. Fair enough but my first reaction is that doesn't seem fair- that the business can record me in a place of public trade but I can't do the same. What if you are assaulted in the store by a staff member and they are able to change the video recording. Random example I know but I'm strongly against the idea that you have limited rights and recording, just because you step into a building of trade as opposed to an open-air market stall.

@Christoff070 those recordings cannot be altered. Access to security recordings is strictly limited and monitored to the nth degree. Most retailers actually dont even store them onsite but in a remote location that required a 3 factor authentication and specialized clearance to access remotely. The store recordings are part of their security system. Not allowing recordings in the store is part of an overall safety and security policy and add to this incident they were actively BLOCKING the checkouts which interupted the flow of business, they are well within their rights to remove and bar them from the premises. If this had been her and 2 friends, like could have gotten away with it. Asked permission, likely would have gotten it, just showing up with 15 people to do what she did? Anyone would have received the same treatment. This was NOT racism, it was her showing her overinflated entitlement and disrupting the business of a PRIVATE entity on THEIR property.

Their question was specifically regarding recording in places like Target, walmart etc. Which you answered in the first half of your reply to them. My question to you is are you confident that they cannot delete and or alter the footage? Just to save their own ass. Because if we had our own footage for our safety i'm pretty sure they would be less likely to delete any footage they have. I have known people that have been harassed and attacked in a walmart and there was a security camera right where it happened. You know what their answer was when it was requested. "Oh it seems as though our security cameras weren't working at that time" which soon changed to "Our security cameras were undergoing a software update at the time you've requested". Which changed to "We cannot find the footage you've requested" and so on. They were lying through their teeth. So they definitely have access especially if they want to save their own ass. So can you say for certain that you feel safe and confident going in their "private property" without some assurance that you'd at least be able to gather video evidence so you can pursue a positive legal outcome. *(And to clarify I do not think what happened in the clip was racism and I agree that what they did was incorrect. The young women were clearly in the wrong.)*

Companies also will not release footage unless they have to as part of a criminal investigation and often with only a court order for simple security and privacy reasons, so a simple request from an attorney wont cut it. these days Security footage has encription codes and backups often times. The simple act of gaining access to the clearence level to be able to look at the footage is extremely high and so limited it isnt funny. Any attempt to even access the footage without clearance is cause for termination and charges filed as well as extremley large fees have to be paid. (its part and parcel of most companies polices and hire contracts, fine print) I honestly feel SAFER with a companies security footage then an individual bystanders more often then not. Simply because more often then not a bystnders camera will capture what is going on AFTER an incident has already started whereas the companies footage would capture the entirety from before, during and after and tell more of a complate story.

When I was working in a dominantly Black daycare many mothers would ask us for help with their children’s hair. They were working and didn’t have a lot of time. I learned to work with the children’s hair and many times would put rows in. They way I see it I am aiding a hard working Mom. 6:49 as someone who works retail this would be an absolute nightmare to deal with. Exactly (I don't work at target) but we had someone call in to request to film in our parking lot. When my store first opened some actors filmed a promotional spot in our store and they did it before the store opened because they had permission to come in and film and guess what because the store wasn't open they didn't have to make everyone shopping sign releases if they accidently got into scenes.

My daughter used to help out at a youth center in a predominantly black community. When the group she was apart of went as a group & took a bunch of kids some white/black/mexican and asian over for a special outreach. Some of the little girls thought that black girls/woman were gorgeous and loved the way their hair was braided different from french braids etc. When the the black woman and the kids/teens of the community center found out they invited them that weekend to come for the day and anyone/any race could get there hair done. Over 50 little girls of all shapes and sizes and skin tones came even gorgeous little boys from the community and surrounding areas got their hair done. There were over 20 woman and men braiding these kids hair and when barbers in the area heard how many kids showed up they came to pitch in. My daughter said it was the most beautiful thing. Those who had to wait to get their hair in braids helped make a meal and got taught how to cook. The picture of all the kids/teens/adults/volunteers still hangs on my daughter's wall. If black men and woman can show up in numbers and braid over 50 kids hair no matter what the color of their skin is... How is it racist for a white woman to braid a black persons hair. I dont understand

I believe the hair segment circles back to "we're damned if we do, and we're damned if we don't." I hear so many complaints about how not enough people in the industry understand/can do certain types of hair, and then when we see an effort, the person is demonized as doing something offensive, evil, or as if they are stealing someone's culture. Until we come together as Americans and can celebrate and share our differences, we will never survive as a country. Victor Davis Hanson talks about how rare it is that people from different cultures can live together as one. It has failed everywhere and we sure are proving him right. The tribalism has to stop. I can already see I'm going to die hated and blamed for things we all experienced around the world (slavery) and for the color of my skin (even though my genetic ancestry is 96% Italian and 4% Northern Africa and Western Asia). With regards to marriage you've missed part of the point Amala. Yes, in a marriage you are definitely taking on the responsibility of taking care of and being in service to another person. However, you left out the other half of the relationship in that in a marriage someone else is taking on the responsibility of taking care of and being in service to.... you. I've been married 27 years to the same man. During part of those years, he worked really hard and I took care of the home and cleaning and cooking because while I did work, my job was much less physically demanding and didn't require as many hours. Then my husband was no longer able to work for various reasons, and I changed careers to a job outside the home that required more hours and was more mentally demanding. Now he takes care of the cleaning and some of the cooking and general upkeep and maintenance of the home. Its a two way street, you work together as a team thus making the various burdens of life weigh less because you're sharing the load with someone. I wish more people in today's world understood that and could find that.

I vividly remember going to a Beauty College to get my hair washed and blow dried. Nothing complicated, you would think. 🙄🙄 I was between paychecks and needed to save a few dollars. Anyway, these students were so afraid of my hair and some were disgusted or just acted weird when they actually had to touch it. They were all of other ethnic backgrounds. I went twice and never went back. It was too humiliating. Braids became a 'thing' from the Norse. Dutch Braids were the hairstyle for Vikings from Norway, old Norway. Those braids continued on throughout the years, from Norway to Scotland to England etc. Braids have NEVER been ONLY for Blacks. Braids were a huge part of Norse Culture! I am a 39 year old white woman who learned how to braid and cut black people’s hair. I got my cosmetology license by spending my entire schooling on the majority of black people’s hair. I am extremely skilled at braiding and cutting all races of hair like all hair stylists should be. I have never had a black client complain or be upset with their hair because they can see that I’m just as good as anyone else they would go to if not better. Anything and everything you want done to your hair I know how to do and am good at it! I was the top of my class for a reason.

I used to be a receptionist in a beauty salon in Las Vegas and would often get yelled at by women of color because none of the stylists knew how to do braids. I had nothing to do with hiring the stylists nor what skills they were trained in but they yelled at me because I couldn’t get them the service they wanted. A month or so ago, I went to BJs in my area. A guy was full racism mode. He screamed that BJ's is racist because they checked his receipt. Meanwhile, he was videoing with his phone. I have always been fascinated by the whole “whites can’t touch African American hair”. I am 23 years old born and raised in SC. When I was younger, my family was poor and we moved around a lot. I went to a different school every grade year which made it literally impossible to form meaningful, long-lasting friendships. Often times, I was the only white girl and/or only sunshine blonde child in my entire school. The amount of times African American children would just grab or touch my hair is unmeasurable. We would be in class, on the bus, in the cafeteria, during P.E., etc. and every time someone would literally start brushing and combing my hair and braiding it (with their own tools), or just start running their fingers through it (playing with it). Very rarely would people ask. However, most of the time they just did it. Not out of malice or anything but curiosity… Being a little girl I’d often let them without even saying anything. Except the occasional “Thank you” to the “ooo your hair is so pretty Madi”. This was such a normal occurrence for me that I actually got lice 3 times from these incidents. That is why I find the narrative that “African Americans cannot get lice” so hilarious. Outbreaks in my school were tracked and we were notified as soon as someone was discovered to have lice. I’d usually find out I had lice and the nurse would ask me if my family has it or had I been touching others hair; I would then tell her that my classmates would play hair salon on me- And boom. A check of their hairbrush would show where I contracted lice… EVEN STILL- I was never angry or malicious. Even after 3 lice outbreaks, I didn’t stop anyone from touching my hair until around 8th grade (when I became self conscious about my entire being) 😂. Because we were just kids… we were just exploring… they were exploring… and I did too just not in the same way. Even as a little girl I understood that my peers wanted to touch my hair because they admired it. Just as I would admire their braids, beads, and intricate hairstyles…. I find the entire “don’t touch my black hair” so astonishing because for me it was the opposite- Yet, I never felt the same way as many of these people.
