I grew up in Michigan, so I never imagined private schools received funding from taxes. That's what people hated about Charter schools!

It seems so wrong that we pay taxes to something we don’t have access too and our public schools need the funding, while private should be from the parents and fundraising not handouts. Smh

Private for-profit businesses also get money from the government for "research & development": They make money from their activities & then the government gives them lots of money to continue doing things that make them money.

You can add my family's town, Modoc, S.C. My family was displaced for "flooding," and they all moved to Ohio with nothing. In Modoc they had land, titles, etc. Thanks for this piece.

I just went to Modoc’s Wikipedia page and it doesn’t mention this history but says it’s population is 100% white. Maybe you or a family member can edit it or add an external link about the flooding and displacement. ✌️

There was a small plaque in Central Park that "details" the community of Seneca Village. In it, the plaque explains that the "blighted area" was a shanty town. Since discovering this to be a lie, the plaque was removed. Seneca Village was the first integrated community in New York in the 1900s, where former slaves, Italian and Irish immigrants coexisted. It was mowed down to make way for more of what is now Central Park.

I think you got state testing confused with SAT tests. SAT tests were always just for college admissions and waaaay predate the attempt at statistical teacher evaluation.

Great anthology of these segments! Amber's How Did We Get Here's are perfect teaching tools (high school-undergrads). They open up real questions of representation, of who speaks for whom and why, and of hidden motivations. Her segments on housing and related topics are especially strong. BTW surprised Amber is not like a sitcom or movie star by this time. She seems like she'd be hilarious in a feature film or clever sit com.

my grandmother emma was from oscarville, she recieved some money from a settlement for some of that land - wasnt much though - she taught me how to fish where she grew up near a bridge on lake lanier

Wow. That was intense and really well put together and she has this amazing delivery, making it entertaining at the same time too. This subject shouldn't be entertaining, but sometimes comedy is the perfect delivery. I'd never seen her before, but I think she's brilliant.
