I live in Thailand, and there are a lot of Dutch people here. They have been giving VVD pretty much the same shit that has been flying at Harry Kane during Euro24. In a nutshell, they think he is well past it. I think they are being a bit harsh, although I saw nearly all the Dutch games and thought he had a very mixed tournament (played very well against France, played very poorly against Turkey (when Yilmaz ran him ragged), was OK, but no more than that against Austria, but played well against England. Overall, I think we are seeing a decline, and although he has still got some great games in him but we do need to have a good quality LCB as cover both to allow him some rest and as cover if he gets injured or loses form. I was very keen on us going for Calafiori, and have been agitating on every fan forum from May onwards to sign him this summer. I am gutted that he looks to be going to Arsenal without us even going for him. I think that will turn out to be a big mistake.

I agree, I find it completely mad we have no naturally left footed CB's in the team. Even Van Dijk is not naturally left-footed...seeing we are linked to Guehi who I think checks a lot of boxes, except for not being as physically imposing.

Thought VVD struggled in the tournament. He will still be a key figure for Liverpool next year but we really need to start prepping for life without him as think he’s only got a year or two left at the top level. I wouldn’t he handing him a big new contract. Two years max.

Trent would have been a better right back last night than Walker, but I am glad he has had more of a rest recently. Maybe Slot can play to his strengths wherever that turns out to be right back, midfield, or centre forward (not that I think he's going to be playing there). True, Hendo and Fab were in the team that won the league, but a team is not a team without playing like one. Trent, and the whole back four, conceded very few goals in those first 26 games of 19-20. He can do it, whether he wants to still is a separate question.

Holland has this issue with the attachment to the traditional establishment- whether the player went through ajax, psv or feyenoord. Vvd did not and so whatever he does is never fully recognised and he is never seen as one of them.

The concern with Nunez and Dias is that both played a lot last season but didn't produce enough on a consistent basis

Agree with Nunez, could be make or break this year. With Diaz it's abit more different. With Mo helping less in defense it's causing other players to do more, Diaz included. He's winning the ball inside his own half, taking people on and not having enough tank to finish. Food for thought but if we sold Salah for another younger winger who attacks and defends then maybe Diaz could focus on being that guy for us?

Paying 100 mil plus for unproven talents from Portugal doesn't really say much about all the investment and time spent on our academy players. Fans seem obsessed with shiny expensive new players and we already have very young players that cost nothing and have already taken their chances when given. I hope Clark and Dans are part of things this season

Trent and midfield ffs !! He s a right back or should Curtis , Elliot , Sob etc etc be worried? Not from anything iv ever seen but by the way people talk you would think that they had seen a load of magnificent midfield performances but they havnt so I'd love to know what they base this midfield potential maestro. I would love nothing more than him being that but iv seen nothing to suggest it but I have seen some ridiculous amazing performances from right back unlike any others iv seen.

Diaz looked very Diaz-like for Columbia, aka nothing we haven't seen before, you can guess what he did on the pitch without seeing the matches. Not very excited for his performances next season and I feel a little guilty saying so.

@@ph8077 no, watch a lot of football though. Diaz’s Dad has been flirting openly with Barca who we are in a stronger position than financially. Spanish release clauses have to be paid in full. So if Hughes is any good, he should be able to convince Williams that we are a great option for his next move. He can always go to Barca later on. His wages are high but he’s a top talent and he’s better than Diaz and Gakpo. I don’t see how in 3/4 years time we couldn’t get at least what his release clause is now for him. Can’t deny that all this will take work but that’s Hughes’s job.
