Id say it heavily depends on the studio and what is being adapted. Some shows are on par with the manga i.e. Demon slayer. There shows that are seen as better than the manga like HunterxHunter and One Punch Man while the manga is still highly regarded. Then there are shows that are seen as going farther than the manga could like Gintama.

Hi, guy who tweeted about the translations here. Those all great points your brought up and I dont doubt for a second translating from Japanese to English, or any language is hard. My point was mostly about how long it takes for official translations to come out when you can read it illegally like a year after its come out. I'm thankful to all translators as they are allowing us to read what we otherwise wouldn't be able to but official translations are the problem. Also SNAFU was an example showing how long officials take. Thanks!

exactly. i think he is so biased on many of these from the fact he CAN speak japanese. It shouldn't take a over a month for an official translation to come out for 1 volume. Look at the Jojo community, Part 8 is still in production and AMAZING translations come out within the week AND colorization. I think this is mostly an issue with popularity of light novels and fear of not being able to not make a profit.

Regarding the translating topic: I totally agree that adjusting sentence structures to fit the language that you're translating into and still trying to bring across as closely as possible what the original author meant to say is not easy. But then again, fans do it within a DAY of the new manga chapters' releases in Japan and upload them to the internet and often time those fan translations are WAY better than the official ones that take years to get to the markets overseas. I am German, I've bought my fair share of official German translations and they are so horrible that if it weren't for the amazing fan translations online, I would have likely quit reading manga altogether years ago. Not to mention that the One Piece manga for example, which is one of the ones that gets translated fastest, is about half a year behind the current japanese chapters. I don't really know where I'm going with this. I think what I mean to say is, yes, official translations should come a lot faster, but only if they manage to up the quality by a LOT. Maybe the publishers should consider hiring the people who do fan subs because obviously those know what they're doing far better than the people that they're currently paying.

In regards to translations of light novels and the like, I think it has less to do with the difficulty of actually translating and more to do with knowing how to communicate what the author is saying, like you said. I know the some authors have translators that they've worked with for years and only ever use those translators for the sake of maintaining consistency, ultimately streamlining the process.

Talking about the translations: The thing that annoys me is the fact that the jojo manga has all been officially translated into French but the English release is still on part 4 which came out give or take about 20 years ago. Sure they only started putting out the English translations recently but if they had a team be able to do it into French it shouldn’t be that hard to do it to english, right? Especially since it’s manga as opposed to a LN because you’re just translating dialogue and all the actions are shown as opposed to written. And jojo has such a big fanbase so like ??? Idk why they’re taking so long

About the Horikoshi UA girls bikini controversy. I'm def on Horikoshi's side. If he wants to draw his creations in bikinis, damn right , he could and should. If that's what he wants. Again, as Joey put it, as long the people creating and consuming this kind of "art" doesn't let it affect their irl actions in that way, I see no problem with it. BUT. The problem I see (not necessarily a problem I have with said picture) is the Mineta and Kaminari faces overhead drooling over the girls. If Horikoshi posted just the picture of the girls, minus the two pervs, I don't think it'll be that big a problem. Some people would riot over it, but it wouldn't be that big. To translate it in a way educated, cultured and elite anime connoisseurs would understand, I think it's similar to the "ugly fat bastards in hentai" problem. Cute animated girl, doing pixelated pleasuring to herself, no problem. When a big ugly man forces himself upon her, that's where the problem comes. Again, if that's your thing, I'm not kink-shaming. The Mineta Kaminari expression overlooking the girls gives a similar effect imo. Of course, watered down. UA girls in bikini=good. UA girls in bikini + unwarranted drooling from two perv classmates = bad. A better more direct example is a highschool photo. If you're a girl, imagine it with yourself, if not, imagine this happening with a sister, your mother when she was in high school, ypur romantic partner, etc. They have a normal picture with their friends in a bikini when they were 15. In the right context, if it's just them there's nothing wrong about said picture. But if a classmate of theirs is pictured literally drooling with a malicious look, unsolicited over the side, it's likely perceived as in bad taste. The "bad taste" is not directed at the girls or the picture, but to the unwanted people sexualizing the innocent girls.
