This video compiles all the knowledge I have gained about Anki's settings and algorithm in the last 3 years to help give you the best advice possible. It goes over how the spaced repetition works, what happens when you click each button, and what each of the preferences/options settings do to affect your studies. It includes settings I would recommend with the new V3 scheduler options.
Overall, this video is an attempt to show that there are no perfect settings. The most important thing is understanding how the settings work so that you can adjust them for your individual needs.

Is there a way to auto add tags to a card based on what deck it is placed into? e.g. if I have two cards called [Data Structures] & [Algorithms], I want WHATEVER card dropped into it to automatically be tagged {foundations_compsci}. Then I can easily make a filter deck for foundations that covers MANY topics instead of one. Adding a long tag name like that for every card would suck balls. If this cannot be done is there a word around with maybe exporting the cards and re-importing them after adding the tags via excel or something? If you release a video on this please let me know when it's released I liked and subbed this video as well, thank you! The intended behaviour in my example would be to make the {foundations_compsci} DYNAMIC. So if it was put into the DECK then the tag is ADDED automatically but if I browse my cards and decide to move the card into another deck without a dynamic tag it should REMOVE the tag automatically as well from the deck. That would be heaven. If you have influence over Anki updates, please forward my suggestion to the developers. I'm sure you can see how valuable this would be. To clarify if the card itself had a STATIC tag {{data}} then the tag would travel with the card as it changes decks but the {foundations_compsci} tag would be deck specific and implemented/taken-away by the deck itself i.e. a GLOBAL TAG that MAPS to that DECK NAME.

I've been using Anki daily for about 3 weeks (language learning) and really enjoying it, but none of the other tutorials I had come across explained the details of Anki as well as this one. 00:00 🤖 Video contains the best Anki settings and algorithm explanations. 01:23 🛠 New versions of Anki and SuperMemo led to changes in settings. 03:12 🔄 During learning or relearning phases, Ease remains constant. 08:52 ⏰ Personalization matters - settings depend on your activities. 11:45 🔄 "Hard" buttons can decrease Ease, causing excessive load. 18:40 📅 Today - if a card is reviewed and rescheduled for tomorrow, it appears tomorrow. The start of "tomorrow" - at 00:00 or 1:00/2:00 AM - depends on settings. 19:08 🔄 Limit for future learning - if you review a card with a "90-minute limit," it reappears after 90 minutes, aiding quicker card refinement. 19:36 ⏲ Study time limit - a timer appearing after a study minute, applying the Pomodoro technique. However, the "Pomodoro" addon works better. 20:47 💾 Data synchronization - set proper sync settings for multiple devices and data preservation. 22:42 🎛 Card settings and regimen - recommendations for "New Cards per Day" and "Reviews per Day" settings vary based on personal needs and learning type (languages, medicine, etc.). 36:56 👨‍🏫 Tips for template-based card sorting, reviewing new cards, and review cards allow customization of Anki according to your needs. 37:38 🃏 Sequence of new card and review card repetition (new cards in review order) is a personal choice. Choose between displaying new cards after reviews or mixing them. 38:08 📅 Sorting cards by due date settings allow selecting order - overdue first, then random or increasing complexity (ascending ease). 39:17 🔄 Using the "Straight Reward" addon helps avoid "ease hell" and automatically increases ease for continuously repeating cards. 41:24 🛠 The "Anki Butler" addon enables quick Anki customization and automatically installs 50+ useful addons to enhance learning.

Suspending a card on leech does not make sense in medical school, but it is really useful in certain cases. For instance when learning a language, it makes sense to focus on quantity instead of dealing over and over again with a few select words
@mydearriley
@mydearriley Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't those both be the same examples?
@aminoglycoside
@aminoglycoside Жыл бұрын
@@mydearriley Depends on your med school! In my country we have oral exams where if you don't know something basic that the professor deems crucial, then you will fail the exam, even if you're otherwise very knowledgeable on other topics. So you can't suspend the flashcards that contain this kind of core information. Essentially you can't make up for a topic you're struggling with by knowing more about other stuff. There's a certain minimum you need to know about every published exam topic.
@supakm
@supakm 11 ай бұрын
I use suspending on leech to help prevent ease hell. I will just forget the word, let it go. Then I will remake the flash card at some point, with higher quality, multisensory memory, and learn them again. That way I can release part of the lowly optimized neural network(the original card that didn't fit into my brain) and give the word a new home on the network, in a more efficient position.

Question for you: you have the learning interval at 1m 25m. I find that my average review sessions rarely ever are more than 10 minutes as I do only 6 new cards a day. What do you recommend in this situation? I feel like reducing it to say, 1m 6m might help, but I also wonder if I should just increase my new card limit to avoid relying on short term memory too much when learning new cards

Great video, I use the AnkButler add-on after subscribing to the Anki Mastery Course, some of the preferences you suggest here are a little different from the ones that the Anki Butler automatically configures. I know that each person's preferences should be to their own liking, but are your preferences different from the ones configured automatically by Anki Butler? When Anki Butler _does_ configure the settings, does it save those settings as a default options profile or as another named profile?
@AnKingMed

The Anki Palace Butler saves them to the default options grow up. I tried not to truly recommend any one set of settings in this video and more focus on explaining. An argument for a maximum interval would be based on how the fact that it would be a long while before you learn you have forgotten something. What are the odds that I forget a card Anki would send to 5 years, and what are the consequences if I have to recall that in 3 years only to discover I can't? Maybe it's "I don't care, and it's great if I do manage to recall it" but maybe it's also "gosh I might actually need to recall it in that interval and will be harmed". I think that determines the setting.

Hi ! Thank you so much for your videos ! We love your simplicity. If you have the time one day, I would love to get your opinion on this problem : When we set a new due date on a card, it's counted it the review heatmap. So today, I had to reschedule more than 600 cards and my Review heatmap considered I have reviewed them. It's very annoying because it messes the stats. I end up having reviewed 600 cards today in 0 seconds.... which doesn't make any sense. I've searched for a solution but there's none yet. Kind regards

Hi Anking, I noticed that at 10:56 in "Relearning Phase", the interval was multiplied to "1.5" I thought it was 1.2 because in "Graduated Phase" the interval (day) was multiplied to1.2 ( 7:59 )... I got confused cause where did the "1.5" come from? I tried to look for it in the options (advanced) and only found out the "hard interval" which is set to 1.2. --does anybody know? Thanks anyhow, thanks for all the things you and your friends have done to the community!

After learning what each button does in each situation (learning phase, relearning phase and after a card graduates) I realised that when reviewing a card, I can not know in which of the situation above the card is in. One button does one thing in a phase and another thing in the other phase. Not knowing what phase the card is defeats the purpose of learning the function of the buttons.

For those in the future that may have the same question, make sure that "V3 scheduler" is check marked in the preferences section of Anki (Anki --> Preferences --> scheduling --> V3 scheduler (checked))

I'm new with anki so I'm having a hard time getting the point of it, so please forgive me if I am wrong. What I understood was, Anki is used as a reviewer for a long term? Like an exam in the next 6 months? How about if I want to use it for my quizzes the next week? Can I still use it? Because from what I saw, it will take 5 days for the question to go back. So it'll not be effective if that's the case? Please help me understand. Thanks!

Before I commit to a 42 minute video, is any of this applicable if you are using the auto-ease factor and autoLapseNewInterval add ons?

Definitely. Understanding what those addons are actually doing is good. Many people rely on them but there’s really no evidence suggesting they’re ideal. It’s best you understand the tool you are manipulating

Hi, I've updated my deck to these settings but now something strange occurs. On a completely new deck I tagged 5 cards (out of 120 new cards) as wrong. Next day when i wanted to review them, 19 cards were tagged as wrong. I can't for the life of me figure out why that is. Any suggestions?

What I don't understand about interval is, say I again and it waits 1 minute, but I went off and did something for 5 minutes and come back and go to the next card, will it go to the same card I had just before? Or is it like an approximate 1 minute in the deck where it takes account of how long you take to do a card and shuffles that card at what it would think the 1 minute mark is?

I know you mentioned it in the video but according to ebbinghause forgetting curves, isn’t one of the most beneficial repetitions the same day? (For instance after 10 minutes like Anki’s standard settings suggest)

Yeah and I do that just by hitting again. But it’s not needed on everything depending on how youre studying and what you already know so I don’t like having to force that interval

I love this video, but you really did Prerak dirty in your intro. He's not just some "medfluencer". He has helped so many people get into med school (including me) and succeed in school with his videos. He is a good guy that cares about the community. He has also been quite frank about his mental health struggles. Not only that, but he also gave me invaluable anki knowledge about certain add-ons, which I use to this day. Dumping on him is a pretty low-blow on your end.

I just watched it again to make sure I didn't say anything as negative as you made it sound. I simply said that those people are primarily influencers and making videos about Anki because it's popular, but aren't necessarily experts on the topic. Prerak is an influencer and he does seem to be a good guy that cares. I'm glad his content has been helpful. I'll admit all of them make higher quality videos than I do. However, I still stand by my statement that I am far more expert in understanding Anki than he or any of the other influencers.

@@AnKingMed Yeah that's fair. You also have helped me enormously in my life. I don't know where I would be without your help, so thank you. However, I don't think he's misleading anyone imo. If it worked for him and he wants to share from his experience, then doing so adds value to the medical education community and doesn't take away from it. I'm glad you made this video nevertheless, because this too adds value. I just found it unwarranted to do a "callout" as if you were "exposing" something nefarious, when imo it's not nefarious. Especially in his case, from my perspective, it doesn't seem like he cares about views at all or is trying to be trendy. He just wants to help, and he has. My two cents.

10:25 This what would happen if we hit "Hard" from the first time on a review card: [Current interval x Hard Interval x Interval Modifier] - 15% from the Ease% of that card. Right? In 10:56 you said that if we click "Hard" then the card will end up being shown in: [1.5 x relearning step]. Are you trying to say that this card has already been answered by "Again" before?

How many times does it taking clicking "good" for a card to leave the learning phase. I have been clicking good for 5 days in a row and the "good" button is still for 1 day. Is this supposed to happen? Should it be that the first time you hit "good" it is for one day and the second time you hit "good" it will be three days?
