Our first antique show of the new season is in Venice, Florida, where the show befits the town's beauty! We enjoy vintage sparkle in this video, from sparkling signed costume jewelry, elegant porcelains and stunning glass in all the colors of the rainbow.
But there's more than just looks to this one! We find true museum quality antiques along with eye-popping vintage at this show, including a 16th century clock, a salesman's sample 1910s ship with incredible detail, and a tremendous collection of early American money that makes us realize how much better things are today!
Rows and rows of charming antique and vintage children's toys, gorgeous Danish pottery, a cool Lucite clock, a Florida pictorial cypress lamp...the finds in this place are just incredible, with things we rarely see nowadays (including a dozen pieces of signed early Rookwood Pottery) make Venice the place for antique and vintage lovers to go this season!
The next Venice, Florida antique show is coming up soon, so let this whet your appetite, and get those travel plans ready! We hope to show you more incredible things in our next installment of the Gulf Coast's only antique show of the year.

@@TheAntiqueNomad I'm nearly 70 and have been in, or exposed to, the antiques biz my whole life. My earliest memories are the flea markets and thrift stores my Grandma dragged me to when I was barley big enough to keep up walking, beginning when I was a little over two years old. I've watched the downturns come and go, over the years, but after the 2007 real estate bust, selling antiques at our brick and mortar shop really took a hit. Our local bi-annual antique shows, of which there were several venues, have dwindled to a single promoter who, in spite of her efforts and good work ethic, has seen her vendors drop to about a third of previous shows. Admittedly, some of the drop outs were a natural part of our aging antique community... aging out through death, illness, or inability to continue to do the hard work of setting up for a show. But, some of it was just downright lack of interest and lack of knowledge. It's been getting pretty dismal, so this new interest, coming from the younger generations, has been so very uplifting. I credit much of that new interest to folks like you, George, who are willing to go the distance on a social platform like KZbin to share their knowledge and love of the genre. Many, many thanks, my friend!

I was sitting next to a guy at Southeby's years ago who paid a quarter of a million dollars for a single hand German clock. It was more like an ornate carriage style clock. I was more excited than he was. He actually hugged me when the hammer went down on it. I am not sure the guy's information on the repeater is correct. I do not believe that is a marriage. The pair cases fit over top of the inner case. Notice the length of the piece at the top. See that space below the bow? That was so that the outer case fit over top of the inner case. The outer case would have had a small tube at the top to help keep the moisture out. I have dozens of verge fusee watches with only the inner case. The outer cases got separated - a lot sold for the metal. Most were coin silver. What I do think is not original is the crystal. Crystals back then were thick and had a flat bull's eye in the center. I am almost positive the case and movement belong together. I would absolutely dispute that. I am a total fan of verge fusees and I love them whether they are cased, or even just movements. The beauty of them is all hiding inside.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 6 ай бұрын
That is really good information! I am almost sure the crystal was replaced, as you mentioned, but I didn't realize people scrapped the outer cases over the years. I know enough about clocks to appreciate what you're saying about verge fusees, but I have seen so few in person that it's more theoretical to me, whereas you clearly have handled a bunch! Thank you
@persiphonehellecat
@persiphonehellecat 6 ай бұрын
Here is a little secret about the outer cases. That is where the watchmaker who repaired the watch put his "paper." Where later on, a watchmaker would scratch his mark into a watch to know that he had repaired it, back then, they had round very thin papers like thick tissue paper that was their business card. Often, you would find 2 or 3 or more different papers inside of a case. And 30 years ago, I could sell them for 35 dollars each all day long. Remove them carefully with tweezers - they are incredibly fragile. And there are people with gigantic collections of them. I just love the way verge fusees work. My husband was one of the few people who could actually make a double flag staff for one. I could watch them run all day long. There are also people who collect the balance bridges - I have seen them made into earrings. That is where a watchmaker really went off the charts with his brassworking skills. The piercings and designs are unique to each watchmaker and I have never seen two alike. Another beautiful feature is the pillars on the sides. I broke down and sold some parts years ago to a very well known steampunk designer who makes tiny sculptures from watch parts. He hounded me for almost a year for a certain piece I had. Finally there was something I wanted more - and a steamunk scorpion for a museum in Canada was born. @@TheAntiqueNomad

BTW there was often a third case - usually leather. They are quite rare and valuable. They were made to keep the watch from moisture. Read Gulliver's Travels to Liliput - he describes showing them his watch. I took a class in college on Swift and satire and I brought watches in for the class to see. They were fascinated! @@TheAntiqueNomad

Of course they were necessary - as were pickle forks, shellfish forks, grapefruit spoons, pastry pushers - I once saw a chart of all the different Victorian table pieces. It was enormous! I wish I could find it again. The funny part is the Victorians were such an enigma - all prim and proper and pinky up on one hand, and I once sold the most incredible collection of VERY naughty Victorian corset buster books - but not before reading every word! I don't see them very often anymore - and I couldn't touch the prices they command these days! @@TheAntiqueNomad

Good evening, George! There was a betta fish brooch there that caught my eye. Loved that ship model! I'd love to have that one. The 1880s French clock is fantastic! That Meissen vase was a WOW piece. Those grape shears are definitely in my line of interest. That didn't seem bad prices on them, either. That 16C clock was amasing! If I had that, it would have to be kept under lock and key. That yarn winder made me think of an Alexander Calder mobile. It definitely had an art piece look to it. I used to have quite a collection of old chimney flue covers...sold all but one of them. There were a lot of items there that I would've had to give a good look. Thanks for taking us along!

Hello, my friend! I liked that fish and didn't think to mention, anything sea creature shaped is good with me. The clock and vase were real lovelies, the clock sold but the vase may still be around...I'll have to check (those were mine). I always wanted a pair of grape shears, it's one of those fussy things you don't really need that connote a certain level of class and distinction. I could not believe I was looking at a 500 year old clock at a show, that might never happen agan! Calder is one of my favorites, maybe I gravitated towards that instinctually. You would definitely enjoy that show! I hope there will be similarly fun things to show you all after this weekend.

Thank you for sharing all of these finds. So much great stuff including those amazing miniatures but the one that made me gasp? That Lucite phone! Ive never seen anything even close to it. Do you remember who the manufacturer was by chance? Arent yarn swifts fascinating? Just coming up with the idea, so clever. I figured it was thought up by a husband who got tired of holding the skein between his hands while his wife wound it into balls, lol. It seems like an umbrella would have been used in a prototype, right? 😢Yarn was sold/spun in hanks and could get easily tangled when winding into a ball for knitting. The swift made it easier by placing the hank over it, adjusting to size for the right tension. You could then either wind into balls by hand or use a ball/yarn winder. Ive seen some smaller ones made from carved bone that were exquisite.

The Lucite Phone! I wish I knew the designer, I'll ask the dealer if he remembers when I see him this weekend. Yarn swifts are really cool, lots of "primitives" show how unprimitive our ancestors were in their ability to solve problems and make things they needed. Thank you for the good explanation of how they worked!

American metal toy soldiers were made of "slush" or pot metal, often containing a lot of antimony. Whatever they could get that was cheap and would melt. Where I am, clear Val St. Lambert doesn't merit the time of day. The colored glass might do better, but I'm having a very hard time seeing $200+ as a viable price.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 6 ай бұрын
It's true that "lead soldiers" leaves out a lot of other metals that could be mixed into pot metal, very well put. Clear VSL doesn't sell anywhere for a lot right now, the colored does have fans on the east coast it seems...one year I was set up at this show next to a Belgian dealer who did well with the colored pieces but sold zero clear ones

Curious as to why they’d stick such huge price stickers like that on the Rookwood, and you’d think they’d display a $30,000 clock a little better than on the edge of the top of a display case, unless that was done to show us.
