Gloomy, cold weather can't deter us! Today, we're hitting three estate sales in the Chicago, Illinois suburbs, all near each other but far apart in the way they run, where the bargains are and what they have to offer.
Sale #1 is in a really new looking neighborhood, but that can belie elder collectors! This place has its collections, some fun looking Belleek, pretty Lladro geisha and rich 1960 Forest Green glass in time for the holidays...but where are the deals? A semi-pro estate outfit put the pretty things on the main floor and priced them aggressively, so we head to the basement past the retail-priced beer ad wall and look in the corners where the pricers didn't get. Sure enough, the called out prices on those items are the bargains we need to leave this one happy!
Sale #2 is a private sale, where the lady of the house is part of the crew...for better and for worse! As often happens at privately run sales, bargains are found where the "pretty things" stop, so we shop the basement (again) with success! We'd buy even more, but the lady of the house renigs on selling a few things she "meant to put away"...but we're good sports, it's just part of the landscape at privately held sales!
Sale #3 is a professionally run sale, so does that mean big prices? In this case, the more experienced sale organizer has priced things to benefit the client and still leave us resellers some room! A 1970s brass bar cart is my big score (if only I could fit the 1970s orange stools!), but we find bargains on everything from sick call crucifixes to a paint-by-number of the Savior from back in the day, and end up with a few bags full of goodies! Estate sales sure make it easy to find a wealth of vintage goods and collectibles fast.
Here's some of the choices we're presented with in this video:
Lladro clown, Lladro women, English applied floral clusters, Belleek shamrock, 1890s turned bench, Montgomery Wards catalog print, 1970s console stereo, Franciscan Antique Green china, Fenton green crest ware, Daley for Mayor poster, Illini pennant, 1970s fruit press, 1970s Budweiser Skotch Cooler, Hamm's Beer ad collection, vintage blender, Chicago Police ashtray, beer trays, Disney sealed VHS, Rhapsody II Jukebox, smoking stand, Jay's Potato Chips tin, 1950s school desk, Descoware enamel pot, Santa throw rug, Pres-Cut glass, 1890s turned bid, 1930s Chinese silk rugs, Lenox Christmas china, Nybro glass, vintage cedar closet, 1970s Israeli camels, 1980s Pyrex solid colors, 1980s Golden Girls style rattan set, 1950s German radio, bowling trophies, 1960s poodle picture, police-band radios, occasional furniture, Mood Ring, etc.

George, you are a jewel of a person and a national treasure to us sellers!❤❤❤🤗🤗🤗 The men’s brown shoes with a black saddle are saddle oxfords, wing tips have a separate , somewhat decorative piece of leather layered on top of the toe of the shoe. I feel uncomfortable telling you that because I know NOTHING compared to you. I’m a 75 year old lady and I only know a saddle Oxford because I used to wear such a shoe to school every day until junior high. 😂 Love you George. 🥰❤

Oh that's right! I should've known that, I used to have to put ads for the shoe stores in the factory outlet center when I first started in the firm that had that business alongside their antique malls. I’m friends with a couple of estate sale folks and they pride themselves on resellers leaving happy. They know that we are their big buyers. And then collectors get a great deal too. We have a couple of ES companies that I won’t even go to their sales anymore as their prices are more than local antique store prices. It’s crazy. 😩

Thanks for the fun video. I've kind of given up on going to professional estate sales because I find that the prices tend to be full-on retail. I'm starting to avoid flea markets even because the prices have gotten so high -- yes, even flea markets. Hi George, The prices at company run estate sales really bug me these days. They think they are antique stores! I hate it when I hear them talk about Ebay prices and think they should charge the same. I’m sure the estate owner hopes to make some money, but don’t they actually want to unload their stuff?!
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
I am old school and think the job is to unload as much as you can for the fairest price (to buyer and seller) as possible in as short a time as possible! By leaving some meat on the bone for resellers, I get a ton of people who then buy all the other stuff in the house, instead of cherry pickers and collectors who buy one thing and leave the boring household goods (that usually add up to half the take at a sale).

Good evening, George! There were some nice, quality pieces at the first estate sale, but they were a bit too new, and the prices seemed a bit more antique shop price. I did like the look of the studio pottery wine glasses. Of course...me and my beverage set fixation 😂 Why are studio pottery pieces passed over so often? Some of it is actually really nicely done. I liked that carved sick call crucifix. I have quite a collection of crucifixes, but nowhere to hang them. That was a fun video! Thanks for the take-along! Have a Happy New Year!!!

I really appreciate that you collect beverage sets! If I ever have the pleasure to be in your area, I would love to chronicle them for other collectors to learn. I hate passing on good studio pottery, but there's so much that I only buy what I can identify. The crucifixes are something I always get when I can, they pit into odd spaces...and are strangely popular with Japanese buyers in Seattle! Happy New Year, I took a lot of Dr. Pepper pix today so stay tuned

@@TheAntiqueNomad I do like the beverage sets, but they take considerable real estate to display them. It would be super-fun to have you chronicle my beverage sets! I think there are upwards of 50 sets here now. Most are full-sized sets, and there are a few miniature/child's sets. I think it would be fun to research some of the studio pottery. There could well be some "sleeper" pieces today that will "wake" in the future. A collection of it could be quite beautiful, too, if really good pieces were chosen, even if they weren't by well-known makers. I used to have, in that large house I had, a wall devoted to crucifixes. There are a few hung here, but no room to hang all of them. Some of the ones I have, I bought the corpuses at thrift stores, then made the crosses for them. Uh-Oh...am I going to want to go broke with the Dr Pepper stuff? 😅

When I hit estate sales, I glance around the main floor and then head to the basement where the bargains are. After the basement, I checkout the kitchen . Why did you pass up the 75 cent piece at the beginning of the video? Was there damage you saw and didn’t point out? Remember in Michigan we have estate sales all through the week. And if you are ever in Grand Rapids you can walk through my house and fill a basket! I am serious.

Something you said struck me. You said these are retail prices. This is not a retail store. In my area the estate sale companies have houses where they stash stuffnthat didn’t sell in houses and then call it an estate sale. They kind of run it like a store with a once a quarter sale. It seems in my opinion that would be the best way to make money off a losing bet. I don’t mean to offend or say that i is wrong. I think it is still a good deal for people with limited funds to recycle perfectly good household and collectible stuff. Like me!
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
I agree! Retail prices are for retail stores. When I do an estate sale, I price the things to sell from the house to people who are there...considering eBay takes a percentage and then the seller has to package and ship and pay postage, it really makes no sense to price things too high, you aren't ultimately making more money on the average household item or moderately valued collectible!
@MimisTreasureCottage

You and everyone else! I just don't get that strategy. At my sales, we do 70% of the business on the first day because we create a frenzy where people buy way more because it all seems like a good deal...which means we don't leave a ton of unsold merchandise at the end

All the estate sales around my part of Texas are always priced at high retail. Makes me crazy. I only go now on 1/2 off day.

They're training people to wait until the end, which means the people holding the estate end up bundling and being desperate! I don't get that strategy

I always made the mistake of going to the main rooms and missed out on the basents. The buyers down there were mean and kept all their areas closed off from everyone else. Never any fun

I'm sorry to hear that! Sometimes the client puts the things they're keeping in the basement and wants it shut off. If a buyer at a sale tries to block me, I just say, "Excuse me" and barge right past them

The lady in the second house took back the Lenox beaded plates I found in the basement because she didn't want to sell them after all

I have ticket stubs and the program for the film Knute Rockne, All-American , The film premiered in 1940 in South Bend. , Indiana. Do you think the have any value? If they do have value, should I put them in an album or leave them loose?
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
If you have the original South Bend premiere program, then you would have some value for certain! They're worth a little even if not though. If you use albums, don't use the ones that hold things in with sticky surfaces

@@TheAntiqueNomad thank you, George! original program and it’s in really good shape. I have it in some protective paper. I will not put them in an album. I’ll let you know what happens.

Oak Lawn is a pretty expensive suburb. Probably overpriced like the real estate.

I think the sellers at house #1 thought they'd try selling to collectors at full price. I think they will find that was a losing strategy and that the pieces didn't sell until discounted to estate sale prices.

I bet you she has the prices high so she can sale on EBay.🙄😠 Very frustrating. I been finding estate sales sale at full price.

If that's the case, then just sell it on eBay, what are you waiting for? I still found stuff I could resell though
