ANTIQUE SHOPPING Better at the THRIFT STORE? | VINTAGE THRIFTING
This is a tale of two types of vintage shopping! Which will prove more captivating to collectors...and which will prove more profitable for this reseller?
We start at a vintage market in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, a new-fashioned take on the antique mall concept where the term "vintage" is open to interpretation. True antiques can be found, presented attractively in room-like settings that show how these items can be styled for modern use! On the other hand, there's a boatload of "retro" goods, things that may have an old-school flair but are actually new imports. Can real vintage goods thrive when undercut by offshore fakes in the same store?
We do find true vintage that tantalizes, from pretty marble top Italian tables and antique stained glass to small vintage items from World's Fairs, 1940s Hull Red Riding Hood ware and Annalee Santas! But to our disappointment, we also find entire spaces filled with brand new stuff you can order out of a catalog, at prices that make real antiques and vintage look like the real deals. "Vintage" is a loosely defined term in places like this...I prefer the ‪@leftcoastrevivals‬ way of mixing truly vintage items into BoHo room settings, rather than ordering signs that say "Gather" or "Laundry"...or "Vintage"...that are not.
So on we go to another kind of store that mixes new and old...but at thrift store prices instead of boutique store premiums! Union Gospel Mission is a chain of Spokane stores, where donors have generously left us a lot of vintage goods (including the same World's Fair plate we saw for five times the price in the first shop). Presidential plates, sweet cup-and-saucers, ruby flash cut stems, Fostoria glass...this place has reseller potential! Vintage speakers and stereo equipment, Star Wars spaceships, furniture, damascene brass vases...this place does have the variety, and there are things we can flip for a profit.
Taken together, this episode offers a good illustration of one place to source, and one place to sell in the antique and vintage market! Which appeals to you probably has a lot to do with whether you are a reseller, a serious collector or a casual decorator.

"But none of this is vintage, just a look". That is the way I felt when I saw for the 1st time at the Puyallup fairgrounds earlier this year when they had "The Great Junk Hunt". They just had it again recently and I refused to go as it had cost me $25 just to enter the fairgrounds; lesson learned. Too me, what you were saying about some of the booths really means 'false advertising", which is unfair to the customer when they walk in, such as yourself. George, you are not sour grapes, you are explaining a truth.

If that! I went to one "antique" store in Georgia that was 95 percent new imports. I told them they were misleading people and should change the sign to "gift shop". They whined about how hard it is to find antiques and how it's just easier to order things, and I said, "then I rest my case!".

Exactly right! It's logical that people in real life mix old and new in their homes, just make it clear what's what. When the first three booths in a vintage mall have no old things in them, that makes a statement that the customer needn't care. My customers do care and don't want to have to guess...it's a great way to scare people off from collecting old things, once they get burned they don't come back

If I donate, I would like who I donate to charge a price that they can do something positive with that money. So as much of a bummer it is to see higher prices as a buyer...as a donator I like to see those in need have support from what I donate. It's good to hear you say that. I believe the fun in treasure hunting is knowing what they don't know or like clothing...I don't think they have the time to really research some goods.

Wondering: Would it be possible to put location info (address, website) in the description in case viewers want to check out somewhere you filmed? There are multiple UGM Thrift Stores in Spokane, and it could help those who don’t recognize the building in the background. You definitely were seeing some Coeur d’Alene decorator prices and styling at the first store. It’s definitely not the little North Idaho lake town it used to be.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
There are so many UGM's that I figured people would find the one nearest them, but this one was near Monroe Street just north of the river a bit...I should've gotten the address! I don't mind the CdA store mixing new and old so much, just wish they were more clear about which was which instead of buyer beware...it's pretty disarming when the first two or three booths in a "vintage" mall have no vintage items.

Good evening, George! Loved the side-by-side, but the price did seem a bit outdated. I'm with you on all the new "stuff" in shops that advertise as "vintage". There was a moment of black screen in there, but it went away. That dough bowl would've been worn a lot smoother, if it was an actual old one. Those Lefton Asian figurines reminded me...I've not been noticing any Alexander Backer chalkware in any of the shops. His pieces are some of my favourite chalkware. It might be like those Hull Green Drip saucers - hiding somewhere 😂 I was happy you mentioned people complaining about thrift store prices. I'll leave it at that...😉 Great shop-along!!! Thanks for taking us along with you!!!

I love those pieces, but I have the same one for sale in Centralia for $300. KZbin was having issues tonight, I think if you watch the replay the "missing" video will appear...very frustrating! Oh well. I really do not want to see new stuff in a "vintage" store, I realize they call it "Vintage and Home Marketplace" to pass it off but it isn't why I came...also, it looks the same in every store that mixes them, so how well can it really be selling? I really like Alexander Backer and you're right, it seems to have disappeared along with the Hull saucers. I tire of hearing how thrift stores owe us a living, I realize the merchandise is free (mostly) to them but it isn't free to run a store. Thank you so much for watching and your comments!

@@TheAntiqueNomad At this time, $300.00 seems a really good price for a side-by-side. I can remember when they brought a lot more...and that time might come again...so now is a good time to get a quality piece like that. Yeah, YT was having some glitches. I jumped over to Scott's sale, after your premier, and there were a few buffering periods there. The reason all that new stuff looks the same in every store is likely because it is all offshore items being imported. I, personally, don't like to go into a space with all that stuff in it. I have a pair of Alexander Backer genie candle wall sconces in the green, a pair of the genie bookends in green and a pair of Nubian lamps in green...in a box stashed in a closet. I got the lamps at a thrift store years ago, and all of the hardware was missing from them. I did my own thing with the hardware/shades, (actually used globe shades), and I actually liked the way they turned out...just haven't seen them in almost a decade. Yep, if the thrift stores didn't price things in order to stay in business, there would be a lot of whiners complaining about there not being thrift stores to shop. If it is at all possible, I'm going to be on for your premiers. I'm always amased at even the smallest bit of info you have about antique and vintage items!

Lots of the old green paint was at one time battleship gray and was given to people by the government after both world wars. They gave out green and gray paint here in Georiga. Or at least that is what Tony' grand pa told us... we have it all through our house and furniture painted with it, too. One wall I have left as is. The old gray has turned green over the years and is probably full of lead. We do not sand it, but we have covered al lot of our walls with newer boards. Our house was built around 1900 give or take a few years and is the second oldest on Payne Mountain Farms. Agreed, my critique is not that they misled, or that they did something wrong; but it’s indisputable that allowing certain kinds of new merchandise drive the vintage out of the market, and there was no statement on tags to allow buyers who don’t have experience know what was not vintage. You do what you love, so it's really not like work. Come on, you have to agree.

So is everyone! Even Joanna Gaines is steering away from it. So now where do the oodles of unsold new “gather” pitchers go to die? You can’t even use a lot of the new stuff to serve food because the finishes aren’t food safe

It has a pejorative nature, I understand. I've never considered the origin when I've used it in the past, I might need to find another adjective...especially since the stigma attached to the original meaning is gone in our modern society anyhow

Star Wars was in 1977, so if you find early 70's Star Wars you must live on another planet, or better yet, from another dimension. lol

Yes I said that wrong! I was a little tongue tied a few times in this one. I meant the early stuff was from the 1970s...but they did say it was long ago in a galaxy far far away lol

Just need to educate you about something. There is no “Mormon” church nor are there “Mormons” … we are LDS … the church is correctly called “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints” I know it’s a mouthful, but outsiders started calling members “Mormons” because the title of one of the pieces of scripture we use is called “The Book of Mormon Another Testament of Jesus Christ” … if someone say they are “Mormon” they are probably members of an offshoot cult.

Thank you for that clarification! I understand now. I have heard both terms but I had never been clear there was a difference. The LDS Church's own choir at the 1974 Spokane World's Fair referred to itself as the Mormon Expo Choir, so I was under the impression the terms were synonymous.

@@TheAntiqueNomad - not a problem! Most people that aren’t members don’t know this (and church leaders are encouraging us to educate others now).
