FUN VINTAGE FINDS AT HIGHWAY ANTIQUE MALL | WHAT WILL WE FIND?
A little detour to a surprisingly big antique mall leaves us with the whole northern half of the store yet to see. Modernism? Victoriana? There's a lot to see here! What will be around the next corner?
This place is packed, and there's a fun variety of interesting graphic ephemera, wonderful antique store displays, even a bit of fun factor modernist decor in stock! We take our time to consider elegant carnival beverage ware, pop culture lunchboxes and a piece cheap enough to remember if we can find its mate.
More reseller rewards await, and our three-digit purchase includes a potential sleeper to boot! A fun and exhaustive search makes a great break on a long drive, but even the store mascot is ready to relax by the end. We're adding this convenient and worthwhile mall to our future route!
Here's some of what we find on our journey through this neat antique emporium:
Pilgrim cranberry glass, Roseville pedestal, tobacco tins, trench art lamps, Cinderella collectibles, straw holder, Budweiser pool table lamp, Dugan maple leaf water set, carnival glass, lunchboxes, ephemera, 7-Up advertising, Dr. Pepper clock, salesman sample casket, Roseville Zephyr Lily, B&O Sesquicentennial plate, KFC record, peanut butter tin, old cigarette packages, pencil box, advertising paperweights, Sunbeam Bread ad items, vintage radios, Roseville Dutch beverage set, Weller mug, triple mirror, McDonald's high chair, mammy cookie jars and black memorabilia, Pony Express pen stand, Treasure Craft tray, Rainbow Glass decanter, Murano glass bowl, post office drawer set, Edison recording machine, hubcaps, etc.

You haven't seen Capodimonte until you have seen what the Irish Travelers were buying in the 60s and 70s. I grew up in Augusta Ga, just across the Savannah River from a huge Gypsy village. I can remember seeing these 5 and 6 foot lamps in furniture store windows. They were Rococo on crack. At the time, the Travelers lived in mobile homes,, but that didn't stop them from their Capodimonte. I, on occasion, had the opportunity to see some of these homes. Marie Antoinette would have been jealous.

Hey George! I watched the live you and Xeno did this arvo, so I'm guessing you're buzzing about the sky about now. WOW! I have a water set, in the Dugan "Maple Leaf". That was a nice one there! I'd like to have those photo cards. They were funny! That staple-repaired piece was interesting. Those don't show up on a regular basis, either. They have a pretty good value, on their own, don't they? I liked those Trench Art lamps. There was some nice Carnival Glass there. There was more amethyst/blue there than I've seen in a lot of your premiers, too. Hmmm, it looked like someone ruined a nice candlestick phone, where the Cinderella figures were. I really liked that postbox. I used to use an old postbox as a washcloth holder, in a guest bath. It worked great for that, too. It was great to see a Dr. Pepper item!!! That doesn't happen too often. That is a great shop!!! Thanks for the take-along!!!!!

Those signs that said “blink lights for service” would be from an old drive-in restaurant. My first job was as a carhop. You place the number under the car’s wiper blade, write the number on your order pad, and take their food order. When the food was ready, the number helped you get it to the right car. You hooked the tray of food on the driver’s door. When they were done, or wanted to order their ice cream, they would “flash their lights” for the carhop to return. I was paid 50 cents an hour back then, you could get 22 cent hamburgers, and little kids could get a free “baby” root beer in a tiny mug. We also put a second number under the wiper to denote the number of glass root beer mugs that were brought to the car, because lots of people tried to keep them.

I figured that must be it! My mom was a carhop and I was going to ask her, but then I decided to buy her one as a gift so it's a surprise. Funny about the glass mugs, I do find them in shops so I guess a few got away!

Nice eclectic mix info - thanks I’d heard that the majority of scrap metal that was collected in U.K. during the war, including very visibly metal railings outside houses - you can still see stubs in concrete outside old houses - was just propaganda to ‘unite’ everyone in a common goal and to make them feel they were making a difference Hopefully some of the metal was used !

Yes, a lot of that was about feeling connected to the effort in the states as well...but there were also genuine concerns over shortages I guess

I'll admit as a buyer as soon as I see a seller marking 'rare' on multiple things it makes me immediately wary of everything they're selling. The same if everything they're selling is constantly 'on sale'. I'll still look and buy if I find something I like at a price I think is fair, but I much prefer finding and supporting sellers that are trustworhty and fair that I don't feel are trying to trick me into buying things for top dollar that aren't that great.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I agree with your comment completely. If everything is always "on sale", then the sale price IS the retail price! Change your tags or discount certain items, but the perpetual sale game always turns into a sham

How much was that pilgram glass bowl worth? Also, does its value increase if you have one with the sticker still attached?

$15-20. No difference in value, but perhaps more likely to sell first compared to one without it

I worked for Marks and Spencer (U.K. shop) starting in 1970s and the tills were powered with basically a modified car battery - complete with battery acid ! There were few accidents as the batteries were well encased but nevertheless… we had to unplug them each night and put them to charge in the charging cupboard !
@TheAntiqueNomad

That's interesting! I had no idea they'd be handled that way, it's odd to me that they weren't wired but I guess they could rearrange the shop better that way?
@lynnedelacy2841

Yes it gave flexibility as to where the tills could be positioned and the opportunity to add more at times like seasonal sales without being constrained by the number of electrical sockets
