This week marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Imjin River, the Korean War battle perhaps most closely associated with the UK's involvement in the conflict. Sadly, Korea remains a largely forgotten war and only one film has ever been made about the British Army’s experience 1956’s 'A Hill In Korea'. In this video we'll discuss the battle, the super bazooka and the classic war film!

I think its time for a short film on the lives of British actors who were veterans. Michael Caine of course but also David Niven, Spike Milligan and the immortal Richard Todd.

I was just thinking Michael Kane served in Korea and then you mentioned him and he was in the movie! Art imitating life!

Yes! He describes his time in Korea in a few interviews and books, his description of a night patrol and hiding from the Chinese is really something.

The first Centurian kill was said to be a captured Cromwell tank during the Korean War.

If memory serves, the Cromwell in question was firing at Churchill Crocodiles.

Not too certain about that. From my understanding, the event took place on 11/02/1951, when two British Centurions commanded by Captain Strachan and First Lieutenant Redford found an unidentified tank hiding under the right side of the Han-river railway bridge while supporting a U.S. reconnaissance company. The commanders were ordered to engage and destroy the unknown tank. AP rounds were fired at it and only when the tank was checked, was it realized that the tank they had destroyed was a Cromwell.

my uncle was in korea as a 15 year old believe it or not and he never really wanted to talk about it he was a tank commander in the usmc and he almost lost his feet from the cold at some point and i think thats about the extent of it we know my grandmother signed him up as alternative to prison.

3rd Royal Australian Regiment , Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery and the US 5th Cavalry Regiment, got together for an ANZAC day BBQ, the Turks were on the way too ...but the Chinese People's Volunteer Army crashed the party. I’m not being glib the plans before the battle were to celebrate the first ANZAC day with the Turks as allies with a common enemy
