Hi Harry, I have both of these set and I think they are very similar to Sennelier in feel. I like them!

Paul Rubens are sending me the Portrait set to try but I hope they are not expecting a portraiture piece, I am terrible at portraiture, my attempt always turn out like Sloth from The Goonies. But I am looking forward to trying them. I am going to try and get a set of Sennelier pastels, I had a couple ages ago but they came in a sample box thing and I didn't really do anything with them. But I will try to get a set, perhaps accidentally on purpose drop hints for Christmas with my family. But it would be good to have them for reference against other pastels I hope to review. Thank you so much Lindsay for your comment and your support, you have no idea how much your support means to me and how much I admire all the work you do

I guess I'm just a contrarian, but I appreciate the smaller curated sets which makes it easier on our budgets to accumulate colors gradually.

Thanks! I have been watching Lindsay the Frugal Crafters pastel videos. Thinking about getting some later. They look so fun but I’m just going to stick with colored pencil and watercolor for now. I need to get a better mastery of those before I expand my art supplies. Enjoyed the video. The pastels look lovely.

Unison's are absolutely AMAZING! It's like working with pure pigment .Beautiful work, as always. I, too love Emma Colbert"s work.

I have the set of 40 which seems more muted in my opinion. Your set of 36 appears more vibrant than the 40.

Yeah I have since spoke to Paul Rubens about this and they have clarified that the 40 set is indeed a Portrait set so the colors are primarily focused around the beautiful skin tones around this gorgeous Planet of ours. The 36 set is as you say just an assortment of colors, but having said that, when companies put forward these assortment sets, I wish they would at the very least try to ensure that within the main color families, Red, Blue, Yellow and Green, that they provide a suitable light, mid and dark tone from each. After that I would like to see them incorporate browns and Grays and of course black and white. This is just my own personal preference and as I am sure you know, as artists we all have our own ideal palette that we would love to receive in a set, very much based upon the genre of art we love to create. Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for your wonderful support, thank you so much

I'm so glad you showed that velour pad. I tried a sheet of this paper in a sample pack a while back and really liked it, but all I could ever find were options to buy large individual sheets. Now I know that there is actually a small pad available.

Thanks Harry. Great review as always. That's great you'll be selling your prints. The Amazon US shows the pigments on both sets.

The amazon UK listing had pigment info for the 2 sets. Looks like different colours with the 40 set being more muted and having more darks.

thank you for your review. i believe they now have 48 72 and 96 now. and the 40 set is a portrait set.

Are those larger sets not the Paul Ruben Oil Pastel sets?
@mjpete272 жыл бұрын
Hullo Harry, I was quite disappointed with these offerings from Paul Rubens. I thought they are more like a harder Sennelier not a lot more but just not as well made. I truly believe that soft pastels are so personal and price does matter in this medium! I bought several sample sets from Dakota Pastels, that might not be the best solution for you and other not in the US. I did like the Unison sticks but I decided to get a set of Schmincke soft pastels as I found a great deal on their 400 stick set! I did try a 40 stick set of Schmincke after testing samples from Dakota Pastels and I weighed the price plus softness, I want to get a bigger set of Unison sticks mostly because of Emma Colbert She is phenominal and she loves them! I know that many pastel painters believe Terry Ludwig has the best sticks out there! They are so nice, but so expensive to me! I use Rembrandt for my Medium soft sticks and Nu-pastels from Prismacolor for my hard or first layer pastels. Pastel Papers are so pricey too! For practice I use Rough watercolor paper and a workable fixative spray to get more layers if I need them. I have tried a few homemade surfaces and start with watercolor paper then use clear gesso to add grit work good, if you want even more grit add some pumice to your clear gesso and you have a very good archival surface too! I have been asked about the best set to start with and I recommend the 1/2 stick Paris 120 Set from Sennelier. They go on sale and if you find them for about $128.00 for the set, it is one of the best beginners set to get started.

Thank you so much my friend for your wonderful comment. I personally have not tried Sennelier yet so I have no reference to them but you are right, pastels are such a personal choice medium. You might want to try the Ingres pastel paper for your practicing, it is cheap, especially the Daler Rowney, an A4 spiral pad with 24 sheets and 6 different colors for approximately £8, $9 or the A3 pad £13 $14. It is a textured surface for pastel, a little bit better than watercolor paper in my opinion, but only for swatching and practicing. I think $128 even in the sale is such a lot of money for a beginner to use, if they don't take to the medium or just can't grow to love it, that is a lot of money to spend. I think your other choice the Rembrandt are another excellent place for a beginner to start. Thank you so much for the comment and for your wonderful support I can't tell you how much I appreciate it and how much your support means to me.

I'm quite a beginner when it comes to pastels. I did something with pastels from time to time very rarely years ago and would like to start again. I've noticed that I'm still overwhelmed with larger sets in terms of color selection. I think 36 or 40 colors is a good size to start with.

Hi there my friend. Color selection is always something that overwhelms artists, it very much depends on the medium as well. With the likes of Acrylic, Oils and Watercolors, you can often get away with six or seven well selected colors and from there you can create all the colors and hues you are going to need. With the likes of colored pencils, markers and pastels, you can mix and create third party colors, but you are limited to what you can achieve just based on the actual medium. You mentioned you are a beginner with pastels, I hope you are having so much fun learning with the medium. Try not to allow yourself to become frustrated when you are learning. Have lots of scrap bits of paper and try new techniques without fear of getting it wrong. So many artists create wonderful techniques which originated from a mistake, they may have been trying a technique the seen another artist perform and when they tried it, something went "wrong" but that mistake turns out to be a wonderful technique that they use all the time in their own work creating beautiful. Thank you so very much for your comment and your support it means so much to me.

Congrats on selling your prints. I will look for them. Pastel is my primary medium. A lot of pastel artists do keep a record of the color number or names of their favorite colors so they can re-order them. If the mfg. doesn’t have open stock, than the numbers aren’t as useful.

This set looks sad. The 40 “portrait” set is far better with a couple of amazing darks and more neutrals, but it very closely follows the Sennelier 40 portrait set which I absolutely adore. It brought me into pastels, it’s amazingly versatile, and I can do both portraits and landscapes with it.
