It really sucks to see how "social media success" works. Sometimes, an amazing professional is rewarded with fame... many times, the best "marketer" is rewarded with fame. And an overwhelmingly greater number of times, someone who has a LOT to offer goes unnoticed. But I suppose that someone like you Sean, doesn't need hundreds of thousands of views to achieve your mission as "the art mentor". I'm here paying close attention to your advice and getting a lot of value from everything you teach. THANK YOU!

My pleasure! Can I offer you a more important quality than exposure? What really matters is what you do when no one is watching. People will start to notice it more when you're doing more than most people, but that starts in blindness and silence. How's that sit with you?

@@TheArtMentor It fits perfectly... I've been working anonymously for over 10 years. But to be honest, now that I'm dedicating myself full-time to art, I feel overwhelmed by the lack of views. It's very difficult to need to convert work into money, and not have the resources to spare to wait the time that this demands. Even though the advertising that social media offers is not that expensive, I kind of fall into the paradox of "don't build a well when you're thirsty". God help me!

@reaperput yeah that’s a common trap people fall into. But honestly, views don’t convert into business unless you’re starting a YT channel or selling a product. Otherwise, views don’t really matter 😅

This may sound a bit evil but that point about why freelancing can be a lucrative business is that a lot of people do this entirely wrong which necessitates YOU as an artist to pounce on that opportunity and you definitely SHOULD because if you do your homework and do the right things that the mainstream demographic don't the people who want to work with you will reward you for that by giving you more job opportunities and you funnel those jobs to you for being great at what you do, and only you can do. I think that fact should give people more than enough motivation to improve their art and communication skills so they could funnel those opportunities for themselves, and I learned all of that from you sir! 😄

@@TheArtMentor I like how you mentioned artist being bad at communicating with people and it can't be overstated, I have so many amazing artist friends who are severely held back by the fact that they don't have any communication skills.

Really supportive and great advice here. 💪I'd also add that there can be wonderful opportunities to make connections and conversations with clients and critics in real life--so don't ignore IRL events and relationship building! 🤗

29:43"We tend to have a really toxic relationship with time..." 100% correct, in my case. (ill people to take care + comic book artist, gave up on game dev because of time. But I'm steady in my creator-owner comic project aside from my gigs. It was the reason I started everything, and it's the things I won't give up easily).

@@TheArtMentor To avoid straining my hands, I prioritize tasks and fit like a Tetris game. I alternate between painting, which is more taxing, and drawing and sketching comic interior art, which is easier on my hands. This allows me to take longer breaks between cover gigs, which are typically more demanding.

I've done two concept commissions for 40 dollars. I plan to go 50 but once I become better. However I definitely need to take payment up front and I'm fortunate my client didn't stiff me😅

@@TheArtMentor I am sorry I haven't have you explained when we ask for money in the interaction in that video? If yes then will watch it soon And before that we should ask for money after completely understanding what the client want right? And we should only start to work after receiving? Love your most of your advice and the intention behind this video, but filming yourself telling people to commit "tax evasion", is not a smart move. 😬

Can I recommend you rewatch that segment? I fear you missed an important section 😅 if you aren’t an LLC, you can and should still claim your earnings as additional income. I’ve also spoken about that in prior videos. Does that clarify? I would never advocate for that
