My "comfort" album is Far Beyond Driven from PanterA. I never struggled romantically, but that record has such a "fuck you" energy, and that really helped me in a time I had a stepdad who was a massive douche, specifically the track "25 years," because it described my scenario so perfectly. I was never the guy to mope, Im the guy to get angry and lash out, and that record did an amazing job of getting that feel.

Alice in Chains has gotten me through life. Everything they've made. I've never even done drugs or personally known anyone who has, their songs can apply to any kind of pain, I find. Layne, Jerry, and the gang, they kept it real, and not enough people in the world do that.

Some of my "tough to listen to"/"help me through" albums date back to my late teens and early 20s. Metallica - S&M - something I got into shortly before I started a night shift when I was 18. I first made a mix tape of my favourite songs from this double album, but then put the whole thing on a single mini disc when I got my first portable MD player. Kittie - Spit - I was lent a copy on cassette around the time I first started the same night shift job and something about the album really clicked. Even when I listen to it now it takes me back to early 2000. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill - This was an album that I started listening to when I was about 15, right before I really started getting into rock music. It reminds me of my last couple of years at school. Cradle of Filth - Cruelty and the Beast - I started listening to CoF around early 1999 and it's another album that takes me back to when I was 17 and working at Toys R Us. AC/DC - Live - This is the live album from the Razors Edge tour, and AC/DC were the second or third rock band that I got into(after GnR). I used to make mix tapes to listen to while going to work when I first left school(I've always listened to music while going anywhere) and a few songs from this album made it on to some of my earliest mix tapes. It's actually pretty hard to pin point individual albums because I used to make up so many mix tapes back in the day, and they consisted of albums/best of's from the bands I was just getting into, like GnR, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Metallica. I've recently rediscovered old play lists I'd written down for my old mix tapes and recreated them in iTunes. The nostalgia is real.

I lost my friend almost a decade ago close to Christmas. T.ON.’s October Rust has that sense of grieving, emptiness, and anticipation of the holiday season all mixed together. But somehow there’s a sense of “getting through this” that I can’t explain. I play the entire album from front to back in a single play, it’s a journey. October Rust is the sad Christmas album you never knew about!

Thanks for sharing your personal experience about how to tame the dark time. For me, learning playing guitar became one of my therapies. I'm learning how by watching many KZbin videos, and your online session became my essential tool for my lesson. It's not easy to learn electric gitar (or any instrument) when you are mid 50's. But I practice and practice slowly at my own pace. Your lesson allows me to do that. So thank you. 🙂

The Grateful Dead - In The Dark (1987) 5. Metal Church - The Dark (1986) 6. Ray Parker Jr. - After Dark (1987) 7. Greg Amov - The Dark Within The Dark (2001) 8. The Dark - The Best Of The Dark (1995) 9. Dyan Diamond - In The Dark (1978) 10. Roy Ayers - In The Dark (1984) 11. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) Yep, some pretty heavy albums right here...

You're list is wonderful, and I completely relate with Alice in Chains, although my list is a tad different. I would say that there were a handful of albums that helped me (and even hindered me) during my worst times. First off was Alice in Chains' "Jar of Flies" for the same reasons stated in the video. Next, I would have to say "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails. Maybe an album screaming about self-desteuction and filled with disturbing sounds, like a screaming crowd, industrial scraping, or even a child falling down may not be the ideal thing to connect to, but I related to the anger, self-destruction, and even addiction in the album. So, in a way the album showed me a path that I did not want to go down, and it made me sort of fix myself. Thanks NIN! Next up, I would say Smashing Pumpkins' "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," "Adore," and "Siamese Dream." These 3 albums are my all time favorite albums, but I really related to every song on each album; songs like Mayonnaise, Perfect, Soma, Today, Bodies, To Forgive, and so many more were so relatable, and in terms of romantic feelings and loneliness, everything on the albums spoke for me on such a deep level, like Love, Tonight Tonight, Luna, Ava Adore, By Starlight, Zero, etc. These albums may be the reason why I'm still here today, and I'm infinitely grateful to the Pumpkins for their work. Next up, I would have to say Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and "Wish You Were Here" albums. These were such lonely albums that sort of outlined my life in a way. With the exception of the big rockstar aspect of Pink's life, The Wall basically highlighted the story of my life - absent father, psychotic mother, shitty relations with women, affiliation with drugs, loneliness, unintentional self-destruction, etc. And Wish You Were Here resonated with me because of the sheer loneliness and longing of it; I could still sob just thinking about the moment at the end of the titular track, Wish You Were Here, where the main riff ends, and then it repeats again, with it slowly fading out into a lonely wind. Beautiful. After that, I would say that Nirvana's "In Utero" got me through some tough times. It's the same as NIN, but less pounding metal and more screeching guitarist. I really resonated with some of the "nonsensical" lyrics. Because the alvum was made to be somewhat intentionally nonsensical, like Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and Tourette's, I found my own personal meanings in the artistic lyrics, and they had wuite a profound impact on me. After that, I would say Radiohead's "Ok Computer" and "The Bends" really helped me. I related so much to the sort of hopeful hopelessness of both albums, like with Karma Police, Fake Plastic Trees, and Let Down. Let Down sings of how life is so much more disappointing than it initially seemed, with life being a let down that will just leave you disappointed and defeated. Despite this apparent hopelessness, Yorke sings about how he'll grow wings one day and fly away to a distant land where he can finally be happy. He retains a glimmer of hope in the midst pf hopelessness, and it's tragically beautiful. This hopeful hopelessness really helped me; like Smashing Pumpkins, it is one of the reasons why I didn't overdose or hang myself somewhere. Finally, as slightly embarrassing it is, Weezer's "Pinkerton" album helped me A TON. To be honest, I was a creep and a stalker - a disgusting person, and the album is a personal look into Cuomo's head at the time, which was filled with creepy, perverted, desparate obsession, and I related to that; I related to the obsessions over women and girls, and like NIN and Nirvana, it showed me what I was becoming - it showed me that I was a creep, and I needed to fix things, so I did. Thanks to all of these albums, I'm still here, and I'm genuinely happy now. I'm clean of drugs, I'm in a band, I'm in a wonderful relationship with my girlfriend, and I'm just over all happy. Some people need therapy to make it out of hard times - I just needed a bunch of 90's grunge bands and lots of music.

For me, Man on the moon: The end of the day, was a true lifesaver. I was feeling really depressed due to quarantine, but that album, even though the lyrics were depressing, I feel as if it just perfectly encapsulated what I was feeling at the time. It made me feel that no matter how bad things were, it made me feel I would never be alone.I think it was to me what Jar of flies might've been for you I guess. Also, not really an album, but there is this portuguese rap group called Dealema, whose songs i'd listen to non stop when i was a kid going through puberty, and teen angst was hitting me in full swing. Not that their songs are angsty per se, but they were also a bit depressing, and showed a darker side of life, which was something that I just really enjoyed at the time, for some reason

I can feel you on the Load album and during that time period you were in a down place....everytime I hear "Until It Sleeps" it instantly brings me right back to my childhood right when I moved at 7yrs old to where we still live today and meeting all these new neighborhood kids that I never had where I originally lived but it also brings up sorta the bad or sad things aswell so everytime I hear that song it takes me right back to when I first heard the song because my bestfriend at the time who lived just 2 houses down from me....he was like 6yrs older than me and he also had an older brother who was a few years older than him so luckily I got influenced by Metallica before I probably normally would myself because of how young I was at that time, and I can remember this mystery for awhile....what do the guys in Metallica look like? Because I had heard their older stuff before i ever seen any pictures or videos of them but by the time Enter Sandman came out it was on MTV obsessively like Smells like Teen Spirit was too

I remember after a failed relationship when I was deeply into stoner rock I was just listening to the songs "Golden Town" by Brutus and "Ode to Ganymede" by Lowrider on repeat.. Not really because they were very depressing or sad songs or anything (altough they may actually be.. I can't really tell because I just connect them with sadness immediately) but because I just discovered them and basically just loved to listen to them as musical masterpieces.. And now every time I hear them I just get that feeling I had back then again... It's less the songs themselves then what I experienced when they ran in the background.. But sometimes I still like to sit down and give them a listen.. Just to remember

Gary Moore - Still got the blues - my first true love split with me and Gary moved from rock to blues. He somehow made his guitar cry during the solos of the title song and like everyone else, I connected with it and used it to share my (hidden) sorrow. Sadly I discovered that she has passed away (a couple of years ago) and will always be in my heart.

I'll tell you what blew me away is when Alice in Chains did MTV Unplugged....it really showed a different side of their talents and honestly I like those versions better than the album versions of the songs they covered unplugged....same thing with Nirvana who did MTV Unplugged like 2 years earlier in 94' I felt the same way about their performance both were sullen but beautiful and it was both towards the end of both frontmens lives....unfortunately but you could feel their pain when listening to those albums

Couldn't agree more about Jar of Flies as a whole. I challenge anyone to listen to rotten apple and nutshell back to back and not feel at least a little depressed. Specifically about Rotten Apple, the bass instantly sets the mood, and grabs your inner sadness and starts pulling you in. The talkbox leads are really like cries of anguish, pain and loneliness. Then the main guitar part kicks in, with such warmth and ambiance, and it's just this instant wash of comforting misery, just completely envelops you. Finally the haunting choir of dissonance and despair that is Layne's heavily layered vocals just completely knocks your dreams into a pit of despond, and ultimately, at that moment, you're okay with it.

Oh Mike, this video came really on time. I'm going through tough times lately and of course music is always making me company. I guess there are some album that can trigger some mood on me but not from start to finish. Although I feel some AIC albums will the day I'll buy them and hear them. I just know a bunch of songs from each album but I don't wanna hear it all until I buy it, 'cause it would be like a "spoiler" somehow haha. Instead I have a playlist of songs I repeat every day. Songs from AIC, Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Screaming Trees, Mad Season, Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell, etc. Great video Mike !

The Little River Band album always spoke to me. It let me know there was nothing wrong with being a loner and being alone had its own place of comfort.

Unironically, St. Anger really helped me go through dark times. Not because of mainly listening, but because since I knew how to play most of the songs on the drums, playing through most of the album on drums when I was either frustrated, or depressed or angry, really helped me to unload all the shit inside my mind. I would ocassionally cry while playing, and that was just me letting everything out

One album for me that was a big part of my teen years was 2001's Deftones album "White Pony" it took a little bit to grow on me but I grew to love that album the atmospheres on each song makes you feel like your in this weird dream....and unfortunately was the last album I enjoyed by them before I stopped listening to their newer stuff it just wasn't the same as Adrenaline, Around The Fur & White Pony

Great video mike, I totally understand what you mean with jar of fly’s. For me Slipknot 1999 was huge, I had just started up 10th grade when I found it and it’s angry sound helped me blow off steam at school when I couldn’t play guitar.

Funny for me that this video shows up today. I've been going through a very dark time recently, and today I remembered that though I was thinking I was as low as I could be, I've been here before. And I got out of it. Lows happen. I'm totally looking forward to moving on up and peeps, you can and will ascend from any dip you experience. Rock on! edit:: oo I didn't mention any albums. Revolver & Abbey Road. 2nd side of Abbey Road never fails to make me cry, but it's pretty uplifting too. If you're determined to stay totally annoyed at the world, The Wall is brutal. And Animals too for that matter. Thanks Rodger you cheery git.

A great album for me that came out was Sum 41 '13 Voices'. It was released just at a point that I was coming out of a pretty dark time and things were getting better. It was a big boost to have such a great album to listen too and kept my mood more positive that negative. I highly recommend this album to anyone.

That Freedy Johnston album is so good, I love singing Bad Reputation at karaoke. Toad the Wet Sprocket is one of my absolute favorite artists ever, "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" is a beautiful & haunting track. PHM is one of the best albums ever recorded. Tori Amos & Alice In Chains, nuff said!!

When I am feeling down listening to certain songs can give me a kind of solace. For me it's Soundgarden (or anything with Chris Cornell), NIN and the song No Rain by Blind Melon. It's comforting to know that someone else has had these feelings before and I'm not alone. One of my friends was really into Blind Melon and was tragically killed in an earthquake (Christchurch NZ) so it was hard to listen to that song for a few years afterwards.

The Smashing Pumpkins released a box set called _The Aeroplane Flies High_ that had 5 CDs with 5-8 songs each. The white CD in that box set which was the "Tonight, Tonight" CD was the one that I listened to when I was super depressed. It has a solo acoustic version of "Tonight, Tonight" with just Billy Corgan and a guitar. It also has a lot of their lesser known balad-y kind of songs like "Rotten Apples" that got me though tough times. Edit: I just went and listened to the track list from this CD for the first time in 20 years and I actually started to tear up at Jupiter's Lament because I remember someone close to me had died right around that time when I was discovering this album and this song ...well, heres an excerpt from the lyrics. "Gone, long gone We can all be gone, gone, gone Leave this world all wrong, wrong, wrong Leave it far behind And although my secret's gone I'll try to carry on If I must, I'll get along without you Gone, long gone Leave this world all wrong, wrong, wrong Beyond the pale and dawn Free these mortal bonds" Hearing that again for the first time in two decades brought back all my memories of that friend I lost back then. :'( /sigh
