Anyone who says, "This was a mistake, a fluke and they kept it," have probably never been in the studio recording music. You aren't just winging it in there (the studios they were in cost a fortune each day), you go to the studio with a purpose.
@Afghamistam4 жыл бұрын
That makes it sound like you've never been in a studio recording music - there is literally a whole movie of Metallica showing them in a studio spending thousands of label dollars just winging it. Also "making a mistake, liking it and keeping it" is something that happens in studios ALL THE TIME - what do you think comping is for, if not for keeping all the different takes of a part you record for the one that fits the best?

You have video of Metallica back in the Justice days winging it in the studio? Sure in the later days they got more "jammy" but we're talking And Justice For freakin' ALL. That album is like an algebra equation and to think Lars is just there hoping to maybe get a cool take seems ridiculous. Those were different times back then. Even in the recording clips from the Black album which came after Justice, you can see Lars trying to get every fill and hit perfect while Bob Rock slowly loses his mind. hehe.

Did they get more studio "liberty" after the success of Master Of Puppets, to the point that they could F around in a studio like that...experiment more?
@Afghamistam4 жыл бұрын
1. I don't need video of Metallica in the Justice days, since if they had written all the songs prior to going into the studio to record them... and it still took FIVE MONTHS, they're either incompetent, or there was a certain amount of winging it still going on. That's just common sense. 2. Lars is an infamously low tier drummer, and Justice is hardly some mental techfest - so the idea that there is no point any happy mistakes could have made it into the final recording is just hilarious to me. Which leads to... 3. You still need to find out what "comping" is. Studio engineers have only been taking advantage of this for about a century now.

I just threw up a little lol.. you can definitely teach that. I run a small music lessons business Appreciate whoever you want, but Lars' drum parts are the result of trying too hard to match the guitar, which makes for very strong rhythm which is great for thrash metal. Nirvana, ACDC, Rolling Stones, The Police and the Beatles very good counter examples. People can dance and move to those bands specifically because of a steady groove in the drums. Same reason headbanging to Black Sabbath, Pantera, Korn, and Lamb of God comes naturally, steady heavy groove In case you're curious, I made Blue Man Group when I was 19 and toured the country before I was a legal adult.

This kind of stuff not only keeps songs interesting and weird, it creates a dynamic where it’s really satisfying when things go “back to normal.” It adds some tension and release, which is already a big theme in Metallica’s music. It’s really cool!

KZbin Username of course. But apparently it’s cool to bag on Lars’ drumming in the KZbin age. Which is both funny and pathetic. I’ve followed Metallica since 1984 and Lars wasn’t necessarily ever spoken of as one of the greats, but I almost never heard or read anyone bashing him. Now his supposed “bad drumming” has grown into a myth amongst those whose lives center around watching & commenting on social media: musicians who talk a big game but have nothing to back it up, and impressionable people under 25 who grew up in a world where Lars’ supposed lame drumming was a standard fact they took for granted.

@@citoante Neither do most people who criticize Lars Ulrich; that's kind of the problem. It's part of the reason why he gets a lot of unfair criticism along with the stuff that's actually legit criticism. Lars sometimes actually writes things for the drums that the great classical composers did, like going off beat for a few bars, giving that feeling that the music has gotten a smudge of dirt on it before returning to normal and heightening the piece as a whole. For an example, listen to Beethoven's "Für Elise" towards the end (bar 95-96 somewhere, I think). It goes from the normal rhythm to adding an unexpected note and bringing back the melody on the wrong beat, only to speed up and return to normal a couple of bars later. Now, of course, I'm not actually comparing Lars Ulrich to Beethoven - I doubt Lars himself would consider that a valid comparison. I'm just using "Für Elise" to illustrate a point. Though, as I'm sure most people are aware, metal owes a huge debt to classical music and both James and Kirk consistently play things that if played on acoustic guitars could be called classical guitar.

I really enjoy the post chorus/bridge harmony; Really beautiful little major lick, especially the 3rd time when Kirk plays a really short but fitting solo. The machine gun riff would mean nothing if the first half of the song didn't exist, but I get the fact that Metallica songs are repetitive but there are a lot of words and meaning in this song, unlike the rest of the Justice album. Lars's drumming on "and justice for all" was the best he has ever done, very impressive, not to mention the guitar riffs and solos and James voice. Clearly this album was when Metallica peaked. Not saying the albums that came after isn't good but not as good as that album, the only issue was zero bass 😔
@nayr874 жыл бұрын
It's there trust me, the master has ALL of Jay's bass on it.
@ryanvoshell97224 жыл бұрын
It's is, despite the lack of bass (honestly I love how it sounds), but the level of songwriting is off the charts. I think James has mentioned just how much the pushed themselves on it, pushed themselves into a bad place mentally actually, which was dealing with the loss of Cliff. But Lars has said this album came after the only time he had ever taken drum lessons (Between Master and Justice), so he was at his best here, and most creative. Lara actually wrote most of the drum parts first based on techniques and patterns that he had recently learned, and then James worked his magic from that. It's why some parts like the title track have the drums so in tuned with the melody of the song. I wish they hadn't been dealing with their demons at the time and could have kept up this style for another album or two, but at least we got this one masterpiece, at the expense of their suffering.
4 жыл бұрын
There was zero bass, because you guessed it. Lars was on another ego trip and wanted the drums to take precedence over the bass. He literally forced the sound engineer to turn down the bass and the drums up. Lars must have felt he was finally actually learning how to play the drums and wanted to show everyone just how good he learnt it.

Lars also plays a MASSIVE part in the writing process Like he doesn't write any riffs specifically but if you watch any of the videos of them in the studio he's always heavily involved in the arrangement of the songs/riffs. Stuff like this might sometimes just be Lars goofing and they decided to stick with it because it sounded cool but it's happened in too many songs to always be that.
@OptimusSatanas3 жыл бұрын
What happened is Lars made a mistake by coming out against Napster so hard. Everyone soured to his personality and people are notorious for perceiving things based on their emotions instead of being objective. Hence, everyone retconned that lars is a terrible drummer. The second aspect is that people love to get on bandwagons, and they love being on anti-bandwagons even more. Look how popular it is to hate game of thrones now.

I feel like this is a good example of how focusing too much on theory/"real" timing and getting things technically perfect can box you in. It's easy to talk shit about Lars, but little touches like this are a big part of what gives Metallica their personality. He's underrated.
@lumpusman3 жыл бұрын
"real timing" woowwwwieeeee
@TheVoitel4 жыл бұрын
That does not feel off. It is definitely no mistake, because Lars *has* to do something like this. In that part we have a single repeated phrase in the guitar, so Lars has to develop the buildup. If he just remainded in a groove this would feel repetative af. But switching to a reversed groove gives some sort of rhythmical uncertainty, which gives the whole thing quite a bit of momentum. Going in and out on within measure is also important. If he only aligned the changes to the measures you’d get multiple blocks of the same content with different grooves, and this would feel very boring. By misaligning the groove he manages to glue the whole thing together, and all of this makes that the final repetition that comes after that feel very strong, instead of just feeling repetative. So if Lars would not do something like this the whole dramatical buildup would not work! Edit: I mean, everyone talks about the double bass part, but that one only works so well because it is well prepared by this buildup.

This part of the song is why I hate playing One on drums xD. Glad someone like you is giving it a breakdown! Thanks mate!

You even did the little circular strike on the ride cymbal like Ringo does LOL

In fact, the drum parts on the whole album is truly incredible, really progressive (odd time signature, syncopation, etc..). Lars was considered one of the best metal drummer when it came out in '88, no joke! Even to this day I still struggle playing songs like Blackened or One at full speed on drums. One of my all-time greats!

I always felt off while playing that section, but I never knew why. Thank you.

I think there's some 'reality-alternate reality' thing happening in their song Cyanide too. The chorus part. Try listening to the part 'Suicide, I've already died...' then the next part 'Cyanide, living dead inside...', which is the 2nd part of the chorus, sounds the same but so different as well. I couldn't explain it any further.

Hey, @The-Art-of-Guitar Did you notice something like that feel change in "Blackened" post solo, in the intro of the song "Thorn Within" from Load? I always felt the same effect

I remember when I first learned it and while it seems weird, it makes sense in the context of what the guitars are doing, and it's also kinda seamless. It's the same with Master, people flip over how confusing it is but in the end it's pretty much 4/4 other than the dun duns, with extra steps

After this whole series my one question remains: Did Lars mean to?

Lars comes from a family of multi talents. His dad and uncle was wimbledon-level tennis players who won a lot of prizes. The uncle was also a lawyer who was the president of one of the large danish retirement funds. His father was also a jazz saxophone player and painter. Lars comes from a pretty talented family, so I'd hazard to say he's no dummy. I can only dream of coming from such a distinguished line.

It doesn't feel off at all, it adds the coolest groove and accents off the beat that few drummers at the time could match, Lars always accented certain cymbal hits in places that were unexpected. Today he rightfully gets a lot of flak for not being on tempo all the time, but during his heydey he was a beast. Watch live versions of "ONE" during the Black Album era and this part really stands out

I have always believed that "One" by Metallica is one of the GOAT metal.songs of all time. I'm not even a huge Metallica fan but there are so many levels going in One, it is truly a great.

It would be great if you could do a little series on Drums for Guitarists :) I don't want to learn how to play drums but rather understand basic jargon, time signatures, listen to a beat and know what's going on and most importantly be able to create decent drum tracks to play on top of. :)

Great video - that part always irritated me a bit... However - we gotta talk about the fact that you didn't do at least a little bit of the Double-Bass section. This is a crime under the Drummers Act of 1987: "When playing any part of ONE, thou shallt not miss thine Double Bass"

His extra random kick drums and fills seem to get the timing back in a lot of songs. Still sounds cool after all these years. When you hear it enough it sounds normal.

Having a fill go over the bar line is a pretty common thing that Lars does. There's one in master or puppets chorus as well.

Actually it's about the only creative thing he does and it's always the same snare/cymbal hit. Well at least he has a 'style' ; )

Just One Fix by Ministry has a swap-over like this near the end of the song that makes the guitars "sound" like they're playing at double speed, but its really just the placement of the drums on the beat. Very interesting sonically. Edit: Its actually the vocals that cause the shift in "time feel" and not the drums.
@AaronLevyDrums4 жыл бұрын
Lars is playing in 4/4 when the riff is in 3/4. Listen to the bass line, that determines in most cases what the time signature is in. Lars also flips the beat.That's why it's wierd. The other obvious elephant in the room that gives this away is the beat and when you count the 8th notes during the explanation. The only time the song is in 6/4 is in the section where Hetfeild sings "Hold my breathe as I wish for death, oh please god help me/wake me" and "Now the war is gone I'm just one...."
