Way back in the mid 60s, Joe use to teach my brother guitar in trade for use of my brother's Silvertone 2x12 amp. Joe didn't have a good amp and needed one for his gigs. He also lived in his van and ate a lot of bolony/mustard sandwiches. I was 5-6 yrs old and my brother was 15-16 yrs old. He would come over to our home and teach my brother, but also take time to teach me simple songs and I would learn them. He was playing in a band called the Measles and played all around NE Ohio while he was going to Kent State. He told my parents to take notice how fast I picked up learning a song by ear. He gave my brother and me good advise when it comes to not leveling off in our playing skills. If you get stale in the band you're in, change bands, even if it's a step backward. You'll still learn something you didn't know in the other bands. The more people you play music with, the more you'll learn. Learn more than just one style of music so you will have a wide variety of ideas and styles to draw from and that will help create your own style. Needless to say, he quit the Measles and went up to Cleveland to play in the James Gang, which had 5-6 members at the time. But shortly after he joined, the band dropped down to Joe, a bass player, and a drummer. That was enough to kick start his career. The rest is history. He basically turned me on to playing music when I was 5. Now, I'm 64 and have been in bands and doing solo work fulltime since I was 13. I'm on my 35th year as a solo act and enjoy playing music just as much as when I was a little kid just learning how to play. Thanks Joe. 🙂

I met Joe Walsh at a house party about 10 years ago. He was sitting by the pool playing guitar and I walked up with some girl I’d just met that night. He was basically sitting in the dark so we walked up but didn’t get too close to try and give him his space. We sat down and he told us we could come closer so we were literally 3 feet away from him while he played acoustic guitar. She had absolutely no idea who he was.basically got a free show for just the two of us for about 20 minutes before everyone else came up to the pool. Then other people joined him and started playing. I tried explaining it, but I don’t think she ever really understood who this man was and how lucky we were.

That's pretty sage advice on learning ALL The Beatles songs. I don't believe it's only because they're the greatest band in the world. But rather because they actually used a wide variety of chord voicings. By going the varied voicings route (not to mention a fearlessness to try unorthodox instruments and instrumentation) by playing a common chord an entirely different way on the neck lends to a more unique sound in a song. Almost every Beatles song has a peculiar uniqueness either subtle or in your face. The earliest of The Beatles is as common as you get and only got more expansive from there. I can't imagine another band, however talented and unique such as Pink Floyd or even The Eagles that managed this so well as The Beatles did.

My grandparents had a music studio in Cleveland and Joe took some kind of music lessons there. My grandma remembered him as Little Joey. He must have been young! My grandparents had an 8-track tape - James Gang Rides Again. I asked them why they had that, and they said so that they could hear what one of Grampa’s student had made.

I had seen this before. I think you confused the words “jester” and “raging alcoholic” at the beginning because Joe is drunk off his ass in this entire video. On a side note, I got a meet and greet ticket to meet Mr. Big when they were opening for Aerosmith in Berlin, Germany back in ‘93. I didn’t realize it was a meet and greet because I traded a carton of untaxed US Marlboro reds to a scalper and he gave me his best ticket. I got to meet Paul Gilbert, and he’s one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met in my entire life. It turns out I was born in the town in PA he’s from, and I grew up down the road from there. He was very engaging while the rest of the band couldn’t give a rats ass about anyone there. He asked me “What’s it like to be a soldier stationed in Germany?!? That has to be so cool!” And I’m like “What’s it like to be a guitar god opening for Aerosmith on a European tour?!? That has to be SO much more cool!!!” I told him I’d just started learning the guitar about a year and a half ago, and he goes “Let me show you how to do the patented Paul Gilbert pick slide…” And he hands me his stage guitar right before they’re going on stage and shows me how he does a pick slide. Then I hand it back to him and he walks out of the green room up to the stage without even checking the tuning. It was pretty badass.

The best part is the "flick pick," ala Funk 49. Priceless.

This was awesome! Thanks Mike!! Joe Cool rules! He reminds me of Steven Adler!

I thought that too but it was more Steven Adler reminds me of Joe Walsh . There’s definitely a similar aura with the two.

That video is perfect for a Guitar Center store. Here is how to set up your guitar, after a Guitar Center tech F's it all up (or does nothing at all to it and charges you for it).

That was delightful. I think he might have been drunk- I know Joe is a recovering alcoholic. He's a lovely guy- very funny, very honest. Stevie Nicks called him "the love of (her) life," incidentally. He got to be in a relationship with a young Stevie Nicks. Wow.

Tom interviewed Ray Gomez on that instructional ( plus performances) video , and he was really good at it. Still my favourite of all the Starlicks videos.

Freaking Joe! What an American icon 👏 Before Joe came to grips with his addictions he was always on the Steve Dahl show as a guest in the 70's. When Steve was on vacation Joe guest hosted the show for a week. I'll never forget it? Not only did he have a million stories, he'd get the musicians on the phone to verify it!😅 I'm talking Paul McCartney, live on the air, got Paul out of bed in England!! But the best was while he was in town at his hotel, he would leave a "Go To Bed" call at the front desk instead of a wake up call?!😊 i almost drove off the road when he said it!! God Bless you Joe Walsh, good health 🙏 and a long life!❤

I saw Joe headline the Ga Jam once Derrick Trucks opened the festival he was like 13 at the time everyone had Derrick come out to do at lest one song but Joe had Derrick come out when he came out on stage & had him play slide on every song in in the set list it was UHMAZIN.

I did see Joe Walsh at the Whiskey in the 70’s. There was a massive rotating speaker on the edge of the stage. Great show🫠🎸
@johnfranklin6857 ай бұрын
That rotating speaker was a Leslie cabinet. I once attended a Jeff Beck concert, in the early 70s, and he had a row of them across the stage.

I don't know if it's still a thing, but Joe Walsh made a few visits do Daryl's House (as in Daryl Hall). Worth checking out. o

It's a fun video. Thankfully Joe seems to got through his lost weekend phrase pretty well. Whenever I've heard him in recent interviews he's also witty and sharp as a tack.

I think you should make this a series if you haven’t already where you review guitar instructional videos. I know you’ve done a few others already. Great video! Thanks for all you do.
