This is such a wonderful video. Judo was a hard wake up call. I was abused growing up, thrown out of my moms house at 18, dropped out of college to party, drink and do drugs. A girlfriend broke up with me calling me a worthless deadbeat. But she was right. I was doing nothing with myself, going nowhere. When I got into Judo, it showed me that the world will beat you down, but you can be among the few to fight back. At their encouragement I went back to school for my engineering degree, I got a place to stay, job, my drivers license. I remember the day my ex called me those things and Judo set the map for me to never lay on my back again.

This is the first time I’ve ever commented on a KZbin video. I just started my journey and Jujitsu two months ago at 70 years old. I already have Fuji mats occupying my living room, and am affiliated with the Gracie University out of Torrance. I cannot express how deeply moved. I was listening to this video. It’s hard for me to talk to dictate right now because of the tears in my eyes. Let me share that this was the most motivational presentation/speech I’ve ever heard in my life. I have a college degree from Berkeley, in philosophy, and have heard countless motivational speeches. I’m very successful and passionate about Health, weightlifting, bicycling, and now Jujitsu. But the depth and breath of every aspect of life that you touched as clarified several areas of my life that need to be changed. And these changes will be made. Currently, I am happy and healthy, but certain areas of my past have held me back from achieving moving forward with self actualization to my highest self. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and may you continue your journey for the longest and happiest of lives. Brad Tedeschi, Irvine California

Wow, thank you so much for sharing that, Brad. I'm touched. I applaud your desire to continue improving yourself. BJJ is tough at any age. Starting at 70 is impressive. I'm just down the street in San Diego so it would be fun to share the mat with you one of these days. Good luck to you.

I’ve been hesitant starting at 51 even though I think I found a good beginner gym for BJJ near me. It seems very new and focuses only on Gi and No-Gi BJJ. I’m motivated that going will be good for me and you starting at 70 has given me more confidence to try it. Thank you for sharing your journey.

I’ve been in many fights over my 51 years but never trained. My ability to take pain and get violent quickly usually had me come out on top but that aggression and constant battle mentality has harmed me mentally, my career, my personal life. I have become negative to the point of bitterness. I had to end a 12 year relationship a few days ago with a woman who I love dearly because she (41) finally admitted she’s turned off by my mental deterioration over the years and constant bitterness as my career failed at work. She’s 💯 correct. It ripped me to my core to have her tell me this. I’ve immediately decided to no longer be that person or live like that anymore. I think I found a good BJJ studio near me but my age has me hesitant as I’m not sure how to live a more positive life from a sense of love and friendship. I hope BJJ will help with this as I’ve always been interested in it from a friend of mine who participated. He said since I’m a Vet and played rugby the community will be a good place for me and that the physical activity will humble me quickly and reframe my thoughts. I hope he’s correct.

Hey brother. Thank you for the video. been doing MMA training for a few weeks now but I've realised I've still got a lot of work to do in order to get myself where I want to be. I think a lot of us become too comfortable being unhappy with ourselves rather than looking for a way to improve our situation. While watching this video, I set time limits on my phone use so I can only actually open apps outside of specified time limits. I also used to love reading and realised I haven't in a long time. I think I forgot about the impact it used to have on me. This video really reminded me that I have the time and the blessing to be able to become who I want to be. Thank you

This popped up in my feed today and what a refreshing surprise. I have strived for this change in my life for many years now. I realized one day that my life seemed to be driven by what I wanted others to think about me, both men and women. I think that’s a mans weakness that many of us suffer from. You can be respectful and a descent human but some people are toxic and you have to learn to let those people go. I decided to change my life and 20 years later I am still living this way of life. I have good and bad times because I’m human and I don’t beat myself up. You have to learn to forgive yourself. Martial arts has really leveled out my “hot button” that’s for sure. I also take my time to really listen to others which is an art in itself that is lost on many people these days. Plus I have learned to forgive others and I don’t stress over many things I use to get upset over. Is that from martial arts alone? No but when you put good goals in your life and strive to get there a change happens and yes it shows. It happens physically, emotionally and mentally. Excellent video Sir👍

He/they always seem to be on the fast track - even more so than the one who stays home and does nothing but work. People want to work with folks that are interesting. Be interesting by doing interesting things. And be able talk about those casually. You’re welcome!

@TheArtofSkill3 жыл бұрын
Rule 6 is way more important for men. Women derive their identity primary from relationships. Men, from their passions. Nurturing is impossible if you're broken. Fix yourself first.
@ethanlichtblau59513 жыл бұрын
I think we have a healthy disagreement on those points. We’re all ‘’broken’’ to some extent, so if we’re waiting to fix ourselves before entering into and growing through the development of healthy loving relationships we’re going to all live lonely lives. Anyway, really appreciate your response. Keep up the thoughtful videos. SYOTM

Chimpanzee politics by Franz de Wal. If you want to understand the human social landscape (work, politics, social hierarchy, confidence, etc) check this super readable book out. Worlds leading animal behavioralist explains a chimp troop’s behavior and social interactions - the chimp info will blow your mind, but even better is the obviousness that we are apes in so much of what we do. Better than any psychology book at explaining humans. Must read!!!
