I’m a military pilot and a follower. I’m motivated, confident but I like to follow an established structure with strong leadership. Sometimes I’m in a situation where I have to lead but I’m more comfortable outside of that role.

From the perspective of a civilian, I see your "following of an established structure with strong leadership" for the sake of completing a mission as a form a leadership. I don't think that leadership happens exclusively when someone is "in charge".

I prefer the term 'facilitator' to 'follower'. I find it slightly less derogatory and distinctly different from 'follower'. Facilitators allow leaders to lead. Great vid

One must be a good follower to be a great leader. A great follower knows when to step up as a leader. If you're trying to recast meaning to fit around your view of the world, you probably suck at both.

I think of a facilitator as a instructor on steroids. A facilitator is a leader not a follower to me. The person would teach other teachers. This is just my little opinion. :-))

Life is not that easy. I prefer being alone. But I don't live in a cave in the forests. So sometimes I follow and sometimes I lead. I am strong, smart and independent but I don't have a patologic need for leading or been acknowledge.

As a woman watching this, this is fascinating. I love this kind of thing. There is a book called "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking". This book explains the difference between introverts and extroverts. Ie: Do you need a lot of social interaction (extroverted), or do large groups of people make you feel drained (introverted)? The book basically says that there are two types of introverts: confident introverts (higher status followers, but not alpha material) and insecure introverts. There are also two types of extroverts: confident extroverts (think: the Alpha you were describing) and insecure extroverts. I think both insecure extroverts and insecure introverts would be low followers. But confident introverts can often be mistaken for confident extroverts--as a confident introvert, I've found this to be true. I would suppose that any one of these could also fall into the "loner" category, but I agree that it's probably more so the introverted because of their natural inclination to function on their own. Good points, I've always been what's been described as a high-functioning introvert, in fact, most people assume I'm extroverted as I can flip a switch and take over a room, but I do find it taxing to take on the affectations of a leadership role, and after taking some alone time to recharge my "social batteries". I think Rick nailed it with the loner category, as that's always fit my comfort level. I've been successful in leadership positions, but they just don't interest me, unless I'm mentoring junior-mid level people which I surprisingly enjoy, but I'd rather pursue my own goals, and view a team as a hindrance slowing me down. Very interesting and well explained. I used to always consider myself as a born leader, but the more successful my business gets, the more I step away to do my own thing, to the stage where I am almost detached from the hierarchy. Im more like the wizard of Oz now, people at the gym hear about me but never see me haha

But what you're describing isn't a follower, sounds like you're describing people who want to be leaders and have to fight it out as to who will be the leader.

Way to oversimplified. I am a Leader at my work. I set the standard, influence the culture and I’m responsible for every employee in my department. In settings in which I am not the subject matter expert - in a hospital or body shop - or even in a bjj studio, I - with intention - I identify those experts and follow their lead. Additionally, sometimes I have an idea on a path and choose to chart that in such a way that doesn’t include others - Astronomy as an example - is a hobby that I pursue without the inclusion of others. Let’s not pigeonhole other people into categories to fit our constructs - it’s a cognitive bias that leads to inaccurate conclusions about the intentions involved in other men’s behavior.

I feel like I'm more of the loner. Not the sit in the basement type, but I prefer to keep to myself in social situations unless I'm TOTALLY comfortable with everyone around me. I can turn into the leader if need be, but I prefer not to.

People get so hung up on the words. Swap leader for administrator and organiser and follower for skilled operator. At least that the break down of labour in most of the jobs in have had.

I am an Alpha loner, very comfortable alone, but thrown in a collective, begin as a follower, if leadership doesn't step up, can and will take over as leader. In business I am a social butterfly, in my personal life, I am an introvert. I think Ominvert is the word.

Leaders can be both good and bad. Same goes for loners. If you are the Alpha Male among sheep, you are still viewed as a sheep. If you are a loner who is successful, then you would be a Sigma Male, just like James Bond, who doesn't have time to waste with the sheep in his vicinity. Alpha-Male refers to the rank, while the term Alpha by itself refers to inner characteristics common among high-value men. I.e., the guy who is a 5 and is on his way towards being a 7 is not the Alpha Male yet, but has become more Alpha.

I was an infantry officer, but I really didn’t like leading and organizing. In the end I just liked doing things on my own and eventually released. Everyone seemed to like me being their platoon commander, but tbh I found all the admin and boot licking exhausting. It’s funny, I don’t want to be a leader because I know the reality of that, but I don’t like taking orders either. I guess I’m a loner, but I don’t really like being alone either.

Perhaps some better words could be "controllers, collaborators, and individualists"? Controllers have to be the leader or the center of the room. If they're not in charge, they feel out of place. Collaborators are at their best when they're part of a pack. Some collaborators are great leaders and will often be in a position of control, but they're content with any position of a social circle as long as they're part of it. Individualists are basically just introverts. They gravitate away from all social circle responsibilities. The important thing to keep in mind here is that even Individualists can be leaders, yet they don't care to attempt at filling that role and will retreat from the role with any hint of resistance.

Natural loner. I often find that people naturally gravitate towards me for either direction or some sort of healing/advice etc. I generally don't mind being a follower, but only if I know for a fact I have something to gain from the interactions, but in the end it's about me being ahead of everyone else and am willing to do whatever it takes to reach dominance, whatever it may be; financial, material, physical etc. In the end, it's about making enough connections and social interactions to help propel my future forward. Not by backstabbing, but with genuine connections and friendships. In the end, I'll always be a loner internally.

This is interesting watching this as a female. Being female and a loner but not in a resentful way; just kind naturally like that my whole life by default unless forcing social pressure stuff that never felt natural, I wish more women would come forward about being what you are and it not being bad, (leader/follower/loner/etc). I think the manifestation of these high functioning or high-status traits would be the Lion, Wolf, and Tiger. The lion is the king of the jungle but largely useless without a following, wolves are fantastic pack hunters and exemplify teamwork for the pack, while the Tiger is self-explanatory.

Depends on the situation. Let's use Jon Danaher as a example. I assume he is a great leader for his team but also a loner. In the BJJ world as alpha as they come, but your average Joe probably this he is a low status weirdo. I think he is just in a category of his own, this can be seen as very alpha or total loser, depending on the situation.

I have really come to dislike absolutism. Categorizing folks like this leads to absolute viewpoints which can easily lead to exclusion, oppression, tribalism, self righteousness. I’m not sure how it benefits us to define folks in such absolute terms. In terms of categorizing I could easily look at your clothing, your desire to opine on gender issues and make all sorts of conclusions about who you are, what your politics are, and how you view the world. We need less of this kind of stuff in my opinion. I do respect you Rick and found you through Jiu Jitsu. I really enjoy your calm demeanor, and your ability to teach. You appear to be a very thoughtful person and I will continue to watch despite my dislike for this kind of content.

I’m definitely a loner. But I get along with people. I have a sense of humor, and love genuine conversation. Sort of related; im a white belt, and have been training for about a year and half. I just recently moved to a new gym, and I’ve seen immense growth in my skill. I tell myself if I essentially live at my gym, and train as much as I can, I am doing what I love and can bypass this idea of increasing status.

The reason I chose to not use labels like Sigma is because there are a lot of conflicting opinions as to what a Sigma is. Personally, I think of a Sigma as the highest level of self-actualization of a loner. The Alpha of loners. James Bond being the prototype. By that definition 99% of men that call themselves Sigmas are nowhere close.

Since when did you become a pick up guy? Lol I do notice fighters are typically alpha and then they learn social dynamics and do pick up. I was a boxer before I became a jujitsu guy and I always had confidence that I could handle myself against other guys. Then I learned social dynamics and cold approaches hundreds of females getting rejected left and right and also having success left and right. I've slept with almost 100 girls and thanks to my jujitsu and boxing I've had the confidence to go and approach and get females to see they had an alpha Male in their presence. A beautiful women was asked what is her definition of an alpha Male and her response was, a guy that's not scared of any other guys and especially females...

Coming from a heterosexual young man myself born in 1998 who is more in touch with my masculine side plus I am a mature gentleman. I honestly believe both feminine men and macho-men are immature & insecure. -Feminine men (Immature): 👎🏾 The problem I have with feminine men is that they are so obsessed with this hyper-feminine beauty standards which is hyper-sexual and pointless because they mock men for not being pretty enough which is wrong & they always compete with women in fashion. Also when there is an economic crisis in our world where would they buy their dresses, their hair products, their heels, their jewellery and their makeup from when the economy crashes. Hyper-feminine men are whiners and they behave like spoiled narcissistic teenage high school girls plus they cannot survive in the dangerous real world. -Macho-men (Immature): 👎🏾 The problem I have with macho-men is that they have this obsession of being this tough wannabe guy this gangster attitude because they lack empathy for men who are homosexual, bisexual and emotional plus they have this bad boy personality. Also they bully men, they mistreat women, they brainwash boys into being gangsters, they brainwash girls into believing they are inferior, they mock disabled people and they disrespect elderly people which is absolutely disgusting & evil. You will find these types of men either on the streets or in prison. -Gentlemen (Mature): 👍🏾 In my honest opinion I subscribe to being a gentleman because I honestly believe that gentlemen are compassionate, discipline and mature. Gentlemen are balanced men because they do not behave like bullies which macho-men are and they do not behave like whiners which feminine men are. Enjoy your content but this is too simplistic. Most of us have parts of all three of these groups within us. Most can step into the follower, leader dynamic as we are evolutionarily predisposed. Leadership can be taught, seen it many times in the Army when i was an officer. Some unlikely people stepped up, took charge. Research indicates in humans 4,5% of us are predisposed to psychopathic or antisocial behavior. That doesn't mean they want to kill you, rather they dont give a damn about your goals vs theirs or needs of the group. There's a spectrum here which is healthy. Someone had to kick butts and get the scared followers to fight the sabertooth tiger at the cave entrance 😂
