This video is a detailed and comprehensive review of the Grex genesis XGi .3 airbrush. This nozzle size makes the grex XGi perfect for general use airbrushing, but I found it much more suited for larger projects over detail work. It's a very unique airbrush with its signature green ergonomic grip. I've always wanted this airbrush and finally decided to purchase it. Within this buyer's guide we will be looking at all the pros and cons of the Grex genesis XGi3. Thanks for watching!

Awesome review!! I really appreciate the time, effort, and resources that you put into these videos. GREX's marketing should definitely shout you out for this! I had been interested in this exact airbrush a while ago but decided to go with an Iwata Eclipse instead. In my opinion, there weren't any great videos talking about the removable grips and other aspects of this brush. I wanted to take the plunge and follow along with your tutorial videos and paint my miniatures so I went all in on the Eclipse, but I could see how a GREX could be a useful tool. I enjoyed the segment where you showed how much paint was coming out in the small dot test--that did seem like a lot of paint compared to past brushes you reviewed. I also liked how you talked about your grip in this video. Since I am a beginner and I have only really been watching your videos I have been trying to emulate your grip and I have been realizing some of the nuances. Thanks again for this awesome content. I can't wait for the fire video!!! Definitely tuning in to that one when it drops!

Thanks so very much! I have a real oddball grip so probably not the best to emulate it haha, but it's what works best for me. Yes, the fire tutorial will be up next week- should be a fun one. See you then!

Great review, thanks. I had a Grex XN years ago, which I don't think they make anymore, and it was a nice quality airbrush.

Thanks so much Jeff. That's the one with the green rear handle right?! Always loved the look of some of those.

i have both the genesis xgi3 and the tritium tg5 but they spray out way too much paint for my liking. i normally spray at 16 psi with my creos brushes but it feels like im spraying at 10 more psi with the grexes. also, the magnetic needle caps keep getting stuck or knocked off in my spray out pot whenever i flush out the paint, already lost a crown cap😢
@theartworkshop
@theartworkshop 5 ай бұрын
That was my feeling with this airbrush as well. It felt like it was spraying at a much higher PSI than my others- had to double check my regulator a few times. Cool airbrush though and I'm very glad I finally own one.

My feelings are pretty much the same as yours - with the exception of the soft-grip stuff. I took them off and never looked back shortly after getting it. The trigger cover for the same reasons you mentioned, the handle cover because it just didn't feel right. I also didn't like the way the tip is so wide it obscures your view of the work. I have both the smaller tip and one of the larger ones and I generally just use the brush when I need real volume. But I do love it for that.

I'm wondering now if it was your video from a decade ago that made me want this airbrush! I remember watching a few videos on it around 2010 or so and always wanting to pick one up. Took me 15 years, but I finally got one! lol I agree, this one is going to be a volume brush for me as well- backgrounds, varnishes, etc.

I have a Grex, (different model), and the one thing that I do not like about it is that I have knocked the magnetic needle cap off during a demonstration, and never did find it. Overall, I really like it, and have been using it for several years.

oh no! I've also lost many needle caps in my life as well. I agree, I really like the airbrush as well. Thanks so much for letting me know.

I've had one for about 4 years. Hard to control the paint flow at any velocity. It wants to spray full blast. The trigger tension is very stiff. Well made though. I use mine for priming and anything that's one color like cars or a one-color tank. Anything else I have to paint gets the Gsi Creos/ Iwata treatment.

I was looking at your unorthox grip. Ive been trying it out and there are advantages. I have longer than average fingers and I like to build a lot of ww2 luftwaffe and italian aircraft and free hand british camo patterns as well. I need a more controlled grip for my free hand work. this was a good advice for and alternative possiblity

It's definitely a weird grip that I use, but I found that it allows me to squeeze the trigger by applying pressure down. That pressure slightly retract the needle. I might have to make a video on it someday.

The Grex airbrushes are very well made and ergonomic; I have the Tritium with the ergonomic pistol grip. I bought the ergonomic green sleeve for the non pistol grip Grex & put that on the little Neoeco. I’ve always heard that the Grexs spray out too much paint; they’re kinda known for that. This is similar to how the previous generation H&S brushes used to be known for their inconsistent trigger response which they have now corrected in spectacular fashion. Guess you don’t like the Gaalari Mobius, huh?
@theartworkshop
@theartworkshop 4 ай бұрын
Hey Edward, I agree they spray very well. I didn't know that Grex is known for spraying a higher volume of paint- I found that out pretty quickly though.🤣 Awesome airbrush. and I'm glad to finally own it. Regarding the Mobius- I actually like it quite a bit. I find that it sprays well and feels comfortable. A few issues with the needle and the trigger pressing against it but for the price I find it sprays well for detail. The trigger is very comfortable though. I also tend to like most airbrushes, but it impressed me. What do you think of it? I'm curious to hear your opinions on it. Hope all is well!

@@theartworkshop Yeah, I like the Mobius, I have the one with the number 2 needle. Like you, I could do without the MAC valve on it; of course, the one with the number 3 needle comes without the valve. I used it recently to spray diluted Golden high Flow Payne's gray to add shadows to the white gown on a Bride of Frankenstein model kit by a Japanese company called Billiken; it's a vintage kit that dates back to the 1980s. I have a small studio full of garage kits as they're known; it's a hobby I greatly enjoy in my retirement. To be honest, I was hoping to goad you into doing a review of the Mobius; I always appreciate your careful & thorough take on airbrushes.

Whats your favorite airbrush for spraying LARGE amounts of spray for backgrounds for paintings, etc? I tried to go through your airbrush reviews playlist but wasnt sure haha, I got the micron takumi and eclipse takumi, now I want a big spray one for backgrounds and large dots spray, like spray paint (forget the name of what their called lol)
@theartworkshop
@theartworkshop 5 ай бұрын
I love the Iwata HP-TH for that. It's pretty amazing for larger backgrounds or thicker paints. That's my go-to, but I've also found myself using the badger patriot 105 and the iwata revolution for filling in larger areas. Those takumis you have are awesome airbrushes!

Thank you for the review, it's a shame you have to waste good money on a not so good product. I use to build custom cabinetry and I had a GREX pin nailer, which luckily worked very well. It wasn't cheap but it eliminated having to putty over holes when installing stained crown moulding and whatnot. Not large liker a brad nail, size of a pin. Same green color. Useless info for airbrushing!

I am very happy with this purchase! It's been a great airbrush. Speaking of pin nailers- a few years ago I bought a milwaukee m12 pin nailer and it has been awesome. It's a 23 gauge. It's honestly one of my favorite tools I own.

The best part of this airbrush is the new bullet tip they came out with! My only gripe is the square front end so the bullet tip is a very nice add!! All in all its a nice line up of airbrush for the money spent

Yes, I need to order one for it. I agree the square nozzle cap was a bit odd to paint with. Nice to see that they offer an option to swap it out! I'll see if I can pick one up in the next few weeks.
