I was totally this person and then dogs eye popped half way out in a scuffle. So trying to get back to leading the pack dynamics work them self out when possible it’s been a little more difficult… But this is very true

I absolutely agree with you. I've had dogs for over 40 years and witnessed countless dog owners stopping and yelling at their dogs as soon as they had started to growl. In most cases the result is exactly what you said : the loud noise and the fear of the dog owner causes so much stress in the dogs that they end up in a fight.

@@julieseifert4680 I will be seventy five in September. Thirty years in law enforcement. Lost my last dog in January. He looked exactly like Clyde. White Swiss Shepherd. It gets very hard for us old timers who were always use to having dogs. At this age I will not take a dog for fear that I will die and they will be left to wonder where I went and why I am not returning. Sorry didn't mean to sound morbid but it is a serious concern.

I'm an empath & used 2 b ashamed bcoz others criticize: saying "buck up" or that I'm 2 sensitive. I thought they were saying I was weak & implied it was me over reacting. Finally I realize all of us r different & we need many types of people in society.

Hi , your videos saved me from a longer depressed state with my bipolar. It's like I was able to come out after 2 days of videos instead of isolation for 5 or 6 days . It's debilitating when it's real. I am so loved by your love for the dogs ,which is god spelled backwards Btw !♥️♥️ You are an incredibly generous heart felt man! It's very interesting how you can see and sense how your dogs communicate with each other and you. How you let your dogs be dogs, you let them figure things out between each other, you only intervene when you sence it will excelarate between them. I am so impressed by your knowledge of your pack and other dogs who enter your pack. It's a beautiful thing, love ya my friend!!❤❤❤

I learned this with my own two. Buddy mostly always was very submissive to his dominant sister, but on the rare occasion she crossed his boundary he bared his teeth or even snapped in her direction, and she stopped her shit and left him alone. Calmed down and laid close but not so close that she was disrespecting his space. Just near enough to show she understood the message he sent and she was sorry. In the 11 years we had them both, it never ever escalated beyond that. It’s just how they communicate. And they understand each other better than we ever could.

I also find that the smaller the pack is, the more intense the contacts are. It seems like when the pack is big, the dogs have more options (of contact or of solitary time): everything is more "diluted".

As a pack leader of 55 dogs at one point, I'm at 28 now, this information is very important. You never want a fight in a large pack, because spin off fights can also occur. Also Lee is the Alpha dog by virtue of his large presence. Being the leader of you pack needs to be discussed in another video. As such words can correct most situations. Good work Lee!

I don't call it a fight, I call it a "correction." Everyone has a position in the pack and balance is important. If you have a dog pestering another or "getting on its nerves" that needs to be sorted out between them. I agree with Asher in that inserting yourself immediately can increase the level of intensity, or prevent anything from being resolved. You do need to be aware of anything potentially going off the rails and be available for that.....but 99.999% of the time the dogs will sort it out. I went to visit my sister and our dogs have always gotten along famously. They're the same size and age and have always been very content with each other. This particular day my dog, Archie, wanted a higher level of interaction and her dog, Sadie, just wanted to be left alone. My brother-in-law kept inserting himself, trying to shoo my dog away, making comments to me suggesting I should......I don't know, do something about my dog. Other than to constantly scold him the only other option would have been to leave. I told BIL, "Leave them alone and she will correct him." He wouldn't allow it and kept trying to rescue Sadie when she hadn't indicated she needed it. Finally the BIL's attention was off the dogs for a couple of minutes and Sadie gave a sharp yip to Archie, who immediately turned around and left her alone. I said to the BIL, "See? She told him to quit bugging her and he did." The BIL responded, "She shouldn't have to be in that position!" LOL As if she was being sexually harassed or something. I said, "It's just communication, the dogs are just fine, no one is hurt, no one is even upset, except you"

@Ms Darby good example of how dogs can work it out for themselves. So many people fear what MAY happen when very rarely does it get to that point…..at least with dogs who know each other. Where I see escalations happen is where a dog which hasn’t been well socialized is introduced to a bunch of new dogs and they misinterpret the dogs around them or get overwhelmed. However, with dogs that know each other well and typically get along there is little chance for escalation. Lee is spot on and so are you Ms Darby.

Yes, I see this all the time. A real aggressive fight in a stable pack is rare. Dog speak between dogs is usually very effective and since dogs don't hold grudges, everything carries on peacefully. You do have to know how to read dog body language though. There are books written on this subject but real life experience with dogs is better.

I've seen a few attacks at the dog park when someone with a poorly socialized dog thought that bringing their socially insecure dog around 20 other dogs was a good idea, lol. And then there was the one that also brought food with a dog who was food aggressive. :::eyeroll:::: To me, dogs are not complicated. They are the most transparent, easy to read creatures. But there are many people that read dogs like you would read a human being, giving them emotions and motivations that just don't exist in the dog realm. Humans usually create more problems than the dogs do.

@@peggynulsen1365 I'm sitting for a dog who is 5 months old and hasn't seen another dog since he was adopted. He's a 5 pound Shi Tzu and you should have seen the look on his face when he met my 70lb 3/4 standard poodle, 1/4 golden retriever. That first 24 hours he jumped at every noise. Hahaha, it was priceless!! I'm so proud of my boy who, in three days, has done some incredible dog communication. The little nugget is already worshipping "The Boss" and The Boss has tolerated and corrected a lot of missteps.

@@msdarby515 I was fortunate enough to finally get the puppy I so wanted. Our's are all rescue, but Bryne came to us at about 10 -12 week's old, yes I put in lot's of my own training etc,but the other's certainly did teach him how to be a member of the pack.

That was great. I have a pack of six dogs, that get along very well, and I trust them completely. A few months ago I rescued a wonderful pittie mix off one of the highways in GA. I ended up fostering her, we all fell in love with her. But, she doesn't know how to not annoy my other dogs. She is young and never stops. We were able to take her and my pack together on long walks in our 10 acre lot for a couple of months, but one day, one of my dogs Bella finally got too annoyed over Mabel jumping on Clay and we had a fight. I was by myself, and it took 5 min to separate the dogs. There was a lot of blood, but thankfully no serious injuries. Now, i keep Mabel separated from some of the dogs, which makes her unhappy, and is quite an inconvenience. She is my foster, but I know in my heart that 1. nobody wants a black pit bull, I have no applications for her and 2. we love her, and it would be very difficult to let her go.

Truth. Too many pet owners don't understand that you just need to give them the opportunity to feel out and establish what is going on before you intervene. It's obvious that you have such leadership skills over the pack and they trust you in that position.

I think it's wonderful that Lee is using this opportunity to help owners of packs understand the personalities. I believe most people that have multiple dogs do understand most actions and reactions but this is good for everyone to know. I grew up in a multi-generational house and we were very horse and hound. I think I understood dogs before I understood humans.. in fact I think understanding dogs in packs is how I understood humans when I went away to school and then later to University. It's even held fast in understanding adults. One thing I learned very early in dealing with our dogs was not to say/yell "no!". I know that sounds weird but we never said "no" if we saw one of them being "bad". Instead we gave them options like "come over here" or "let's do this"... And then we would take a look at the scenario. To this day when I see someone say no when dogs are dogging I want to give my opinion but that is not for me to give. Lee on the other hand, Lee can teach many! ❤🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

We’ve always had 3-5 dogs, always strays who show up and we can’t find their families. So they stay with us forever. They’ve always gotten along eventually but your video today is very helpful with our older, grumpier doggies. ☺️

This applies to children. You are the pack/kids leader. You need to exude strength. Just like he expects to when needed. I could exude my strength through just a look. Called " the mom look". Worked every time. It meant "don't.

One subject I wish you would address is when owners brag their dog is over protective.. like a badge of honor. Too me, it represents a dog that does not fully trust and /or respect their owner.

That’s your ignorance about dog’s DNA. Some breeds are incredibly protective, and have been specifically bred over thousands of years, to be so. Independent breeds, that are fully trusted and respected by their owners, to do their job!

I had real concerns recently, when flying over from oz to New Zeland with my JR terrier. She's 13, a bit of a grumpy old lady, and we were going to have to live with my son for a couple of weeks before moving into our own house. He has two bumptious sons, plus a large rescue mongrel. But ... we followed the right option, and let the dogs sort it out. The wee terrier growled, even tried to nip the bigger dog (couldn't reach his chin !). Now they rub along happily, even getting to be friends, on their own terms.

A pack is social! They have survived for thousands of years because they have learned to communicate. Trust nature and trust that you know your animal. I have cats, every time 2 of them have a standoff my husband stops them, and I stop him. They are communicating.... if they can't work it out for themselves, 1 usually finds their way to me. "Alpha, make them stop!" There are hierarchies needed, you have to allow them some space to work that out. If you stop every conflict, you create anxiety in the pack or pride.

@PerfectionPending 🧙‍♀️ Exactly!!! I have rarely had to get between them. And when I have, my size seems to be enough and this is cats! Dogs tend to be a bit easier (I would guess it's because they have the stronger pack mentality.) But when they come to me for help or protection, it was the coolest thing I learned about them, I am a good Alpha, they don't fear me because I have never given them a reason to - but having their trust is so incredible!

The being fearful is a good point that I hadn't really thought of. I have two dogs of my own, and I pet sit two other dogs five days per week. My older dog is nine years old, and the younger one is one year old. My older dog, Dylan, despises my younger one, Vesper - and so every day he's either growling at her, or attacking her. She doesn't usually react to his aggression, but she has now outgrown him, and once or twice she has fought back for a minute, kind of defending her boundaries. I have been stepping in EVERY time, verbally intervening, or separated them briefly. But now I kind of recognize that I care about this way more than they seem to! Most of the time they go about their business, with Vesper either ignoring him or staying out of his way. I've been worried that they will bite each other, but it's never happened - even when they appear to be fighting! Thanks for this helpful insight into dog pack behaviour.

Dogs, just like other animals, use sounds/body posture/facial expressions, to get their point across. You are 💯% correct to NOT immediately interfere, unless it becomes escalated. I have four rescue kitties, and my, "trouble/stinker/good/mama's boy", Hunter, gets jealous of his two younger sisters, and will place himself between me and them, at times, giving them light nips on the legs, trying to get them out of the way. They both have learned to ignore him, and they ALL get plenty of love! 🥰 Humans do the same thing for their space. Luckily, I can cuss in 11 languages, so I can pretty much drive anyone out of my bubble. 🤣 I am the #packleader ❤

Love your channel and love what you’re doing for animals! I have been a K9 Handler and dog owner for decades. But I am now having a situation with my 2 rescue dogs. Both are shepherds and both came from neglect/abuse situations. My 1st guy (Butch) is very easy going and loves everyone. He gets along with my old guy a min pin/chihuahua. I’ve had Butch for about 21/2 yrs. I recently adopted Rett, who was the most shut down, timid, totally disengaged dog I have ever seen. He was about to be euthanized, but I couldn’t let that happen. In the 6mos or so that I’ve had him, he has become a different dog! He actually comes to me to be petted and loved on. He absolutely adores Butch, and Butch really likes him too…most of the time. The issue is Butch will jump on Rett when I am giving Rett attention. He hasn’t hurt Rett, and it doesn’t happen often, but I hate that now that Rett has started to come around, Butch’s possessiveness might ruin the progress Rett has made. Any suggestions? Usually, when I notice Butch is getting tense, I verbally correct him, but I have had to separate them a couple of times. I spent quite a long time as an explosives dog handler in Iraq, and had to separate fierce alpha dogs that truly wanted to hurt each other. This isn’t anything like that, but it’s upsetting that my pack isn’t as happy as it could be.

Since you were a K9 handler in Iraq (no less!), I don't know if there's anything I can tell you that you don't already sense on some level yourself. Rather than overthink "pack mentality", it seems more the same kind of sibling rivalry as in any family, such as when a new baby arrives. Maybe Butch is jealous of your attention to Rett, so he jumps on him as a way asserting his place or "tamping down" Rett's insecurity? It's good that Rett now goes to you, but sometimes overindulging with affection only further feeds that insecurity. Can you perhaps share affection with both Rett and Butch at the same time, or give Butch as much affection as you do now Rett, then set boundaries/limits on the time that each gets? Just a few ideas, hope these help.

@@laurat1129 Thank you for your comments! Great minds must thank alike, because I am trying to do exactly what you suggested. I tried to avoid using the word jealous to describe Butch’s behavior, because my trainers always bitched at me for giving dogs human like motivations and feelings. I think the sibling rivalry thing is closest to what is going on. I do love on them both at the same time, unless Butch isn’t around, and Butch has not attempted to hurt Rett, so I’ll keep going in this direction. Thank you again for taking time to offer ideas.

Right. And for those who have a pack really pay attention to the dogs interactions. That way you understand each dogs body language. You'll learn to distinguish their actual language. Not all growls are the same and not all growls are a sign of aggression.

Lee, you brought up an important topic (boundaries) when two or more dogs share a home. We know that dogs form packs. Each time a new dog comes in, the pack (family) adjusts to the new addition. I love that you share your knowledge and help educate your audience on canine behavior, and how to give your dogs a happy, healthy life, (physically & emotionally), while enjoying the companionship of doggie friends. I am a pet sitter. I have a big fenced yard and offer doggie play times and overnight stays. I realize the importantance of the pack, and proper introductions of new dogs to our group. I will not make reservations for overnight stays for new clients until my dog and I meet with them. The purpose of the "meet & greet" is to observe the dogs' interactions, and to get an idea of the client's dog's personality (in addition to the information the client shares with me about their dog.) Basically, it's a temperament test. (But there is no "fail" of this test.) It is, as you pointed out, very important to observe the dogs. They usually quickly settle and let each other know about any boundary issues, and what they will or will not tolerate. I describe it not as being aggressive, but being assertive when one dog let's the other know that a certain behavior is crossing their personal boundaries. I was also advised by a dog trainer, to allow my dog to bark or growl, when meeting/interacting with other dogs, rather than admonishing them for a bark or growl. Why? Because that is the way a dog can say "I'm uncomfortable. I'm not happy with this situation." If you don't allow a dog space to leave an uncomfortable situation, and if he's not allowed to vocalize his displeasure or anxiety, then his only other option is to fight. That makes sense to me. Most dogs don't want to fight and will avoid it if possible. Some may fight, if they feel backed in a corner, with no other option. The goal Is to allow them options other than a fight. It is common for dogs to bark and growl when playing. I liken it to bunch of excited children playing. In their excitement they tend to get loud and noisy. There is a big difference, though, and it's easy to recognize the difference, between dogs "talking" or verbalizing during play, and the barking and growling of a dog that's uncomfortable or scared around another dog. One of my dogs, a sweet easy going Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Poodle mix) was very friendly and playful. He got along with most any dog. Not a mean bone in his body...no way could he be called aggressive. However, his big "no-no" (boundary) was that he would not allow a young male dog to hover over him, or mount him. He had no problem and would tolerate it, if the dog was an older male, or a female of any age. But if it was an adolescent male, he would immediately growl and snap at the dog if it did not move away. He never bit a dog, nor do I think he ever intended to. He just made it very clear, immediately, to the other dog that he would not tolerate that behavior. The other dogs immediately understood his message of "I don't like that, back off." So, in those instances, he was assertive, not aggressive. He clearly and quickly let other dogs know he had a problem with that behavior. Once that was resolved, the dogs would engage in play and happily carry on. Letting the dog handle it, and clearly communicate his boundaries, was much better than a human intervention. However, if a dog is shy or very anxious, and doesn't assert himself to tell a dog "back off, I'm uncomfortable", then I intervene for him, and won't allow him to be bullied or overwhelmed. A dog trainer gave me some very good advice about dogs meeting for the first time. She said, as you did, that it's best to just observe and see how the dogs interact, and let them settle conflicts peacefully, without my interference. Her belief, (backed by her experiences and canine behavior studies of experts) is that it is best to watch a "meet & greet" between the dogs, and watch their body language. If it is apparent that there is tension and, as you described "one dog is not respecting the other's boundaries", give them a few minutes to see how the one (whose boundaries are crossed) handles the other not respecting them and their boundaries. Usually, they work it out, and are fine. But, if the tension is not settled between the two, it can escalate. If you see that is about to happen (escalating tensions), then you intervene. I am sure I miss some of the subtle signs dogs communicate to one another. But, one thing to watch, and is easy to see, is how loose and relaxed the dogs' bodies are as they move about. Also, dogs are more relaxed if they have room to spread out and can put space between them and the dog that is annoying them. (Allowing them space to separate- is the reason I always do "meet & greets" in my fenced yard.) Canine experts say that if given the option of putting space between them, the majority of dogs will avoid a conflict, rather than fight.

I totally agree. Fearful owners often perpetuate conflict with their dog and other dogs. So many times I see an owner holding the dog back around other dogs because the owner is scared, when the dog just wants to play, say hi, etc.

LOL on silence!!! When my kids were little the fear of silence NOT after bedtime was a cortisol rush!!! After hearing this I know I've let my fear control the situation too much. I am more afraid of the other owners not stepping in when they need to than of the dogs but now I see that just shows my pooch I dont fully trust them. You rock!

Hi, I'm 83 and been in rescue, and other endeavors with dogs since I was six years old. You are absolutely correct!! I do the same thing. I hear from friends about dog fight amongst their pets. I have to tell them over and over that it's not a "fight", these people don't learn because they are in a hurry to stop the so called "fight". The average dog owner or cats or whatever do not understand the language of their pets. Do not understand their pets perceptions of an event or life in general. Drives me nuts. People have many motives for having a particular pet. And they are influenced by family members, story lines in the news, Disney movies about dogs, cats, etc.. They don't pay attention.
