Would loooove to see another interview with Ali! Could be really cool to do an episode where you two deep dives into the persian / babylonian techniques like profections and fridaria and how they came to be, if there were any variations practiced then that aren't practiced now, etc!

Wow, Ali A Olomi's explanation of multicultural Hellenism and the problematic term of "Western" is music to my ears! (01:15:48 Alexandria & 01:19:26 Ethnicity and ancient sources) I've always taken issue with the term Western because many conflate the term with "Europe" when in fact a HUGE amount of Western culture and history has influence from Islamic, Middle Eastern, North African, and Indian cultures. He said it better than I ever could! So grateful for his wisdom!

Good episode. A view I like to have with astrology is an image where different “races, cultures, etc are working together to find common ground searching for a truth as opposed to lightsaber fighting with god rods which often wins out. I’m a little over half way through the episode and really enjoying it, will complete it tomorrow. Just figured I’d say that and a current astrology humor moment was beginning to read hermeticum surprised it’s so obsessed with the 8th house knowing where this idealism ended up. Then going into lots/parts and starting tests casting them finding my 8th house is wildly populated by them. I then remembered I am in an 8th house profection and studying these subjects the way I am started in my last one. It started with this tone: “I’d only believe in, or trust a religion and/or ideology that’s old enough to not be contaminated by man(human)kind. Finding patterns dating further and further back before they’re taken over by the spirit they fought against. Sort of mentioned differently, as some point out Jesus Christ wasn’t white and I’ll joke “well, Jesus may not have been but no one said anything about the anti-Christ”. Sympathy for the guest, I like to avoid politics despite liking the topic, but my astrology dive delves into religion/spirituality in a hyper critical way. Good ideas don’t equal right, the 7 spheres as the 7 planet orbits makes no sense while it being houses 1-7 does. Plus they’re heavily focused on the 8th house which makes sense since the ouroboros is often depicted as an 8 where god is whole so 0. 8 is also described as a serpent (soul) shedding which is a another serpent symbolism. It seems heavily focused on the 7-8-9 sections of houses. I have no issues with that, it’s an interesting contrast to modern beliefs. It’s also interesting to have an anger with god as a starting point for the zodiac. It makes no sense it turned into what it became while also making its point by describing a specific house. Plus, the cosmology is wrong to begin with. lol. So.. things devolve quickly to hating astrology to competing beliefs/religions where it becomes what it’s fighting. I’m enjoying the hermeticum so far, I’m not sure if/when it shifts into calling for genocide. (Kidding) I just found it humorous I couldn’t recall my last 8th house profection and it smacked me in the face suddenly. I wouldn’t mind an episode like this with kind of a round table of different types of astrologers discussing what’s common and different in each system in a creative instead of debating way. Though, it turning into a western style bar fight may be good for going viral… Hellenistic astrology is winning so far. Adding: it is kinda sad that in modern times we think of Baghdad currently in terms of recent war, not the highly influential region that laid out so many important global foundations. I’m really enjoying these past podcasts.

Her original Persian name was Pouran; Buran is the Arabized form of it (there is no P sound in the Arabic language, so they used to convert P into B or F). Also the name Now-Bakht literally means "New-destiny", which is an interesting name for the lineage of astrologers. (it may not sound interesting in English, but given the Arabic word "taale'" was used for horoscope in the Perso-Arabic astrology, and taale' can also mean destiny, I think there could be some connections there.

Great talk: Very informative and well-presented! Thanks to both of you! Couple of points: 1) I disagree with Ali that the reason not many books survived from the Sassanid period was that they mostly transmitted their knowledge orally instead of written work. The Sassanid were also hugely keen on scholarly works (most likely inspired from the Zoroastrian principal of holding Wisdom above all else, even the highest deity in Zoroastrianism is literally called "Lord of Wisdom", Ahura Mazda). As Ali mentioned, Sassanians had established and commissioned the learning centre of Gondi-Shapour in which 1000s of books were written, translated, and collected). If anything, many scholars argue the insatiable desire to produce books and knowledge during the Islamic Golden Age was inherited from the Sassanian tradition. The reason that unfortunately not many Middle Persian texts survived was because upon the conquest of the Sassanid Empire by the second Muslim Qalif, Omar ibn Khattab, many books were burnt by the early Islamic conquers. Later on, the Mongols ensured to burn anything. The Mongols even lit the bathhouses by books. There were so many books that for weeks they could warm the bathhouses!!!! 2) The ancient city of Hegmatana (modern day city of Hamadan in today Western Iran) also has a circular/Zodiacal shape very similar to Baghdad which suggests to me, it could have also built via electional astrology. 3) It's been said (and I believe it to be true) that when Alexander conquered the Achaemenid Empire, he stole the early version of Avesta (the sacred book of Zoroastrianism). That book was written with gold on cow skin, and it included all the knowledge of the time including astrology, as well as medicine, mathematics, philosophy, etc. That version of Avesta was not just a scared text but a complete encyclopedia of the time. He took the book back to Greece, and plagiarized the knowledge it had. I highly suspect the Greek astrology was created based on that source.
