A little backstory on this song (to the best of my knowledge( Avenged Sevenfold was kind of in a rut after their second album came out. Sure it made money, but it wasn't exactly the commercial success the amount of money they sunk into it said it should make. Guitarist Brian "Synyster Gates" Haner had been sitting in a hotel room and was watching whatever was on TV. The movie "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" came on, and he wrote this song while watching it. He drew plenty of comparisons to that movie, but more specifically the idea of the music industry just being legalized gambling. They released Bat Country as the first single off of their third album "City Of Evil" and like no one cared. Until a friend of the band invited them onto a radio show to play the song live. The song EXPLODED after that. This is one of the songs that changed the music in the early 2000s.

I wouldn’t say they were in a rut after their 2nd album considering that had just signed with a major music label. When City of Evil dropped it underperformed in terms of first week sales though. It was actually the band Good Charlotte that invited them to play on MTV Live after they released Bat Country as a single and that’s when it blew up. It also helped that they won an MTV video award for that song not long after

Charis this is the first big hit that Avenged was put on the map so to speak. I became a huge fan as result. They still amaze me with the musicianship and vocal talents of M-Sharows. Suggestions Sheppard of fire maybe a live version all of them are great but the drummer is just insane!

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". Later used by Hunter S. Thomson in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” It references the human tendency to drown out pain in debauchery and substance abuse. Hence the use in a song dedicated to Hunter S. Thomson’s book.

So the music video for Bat Country actually cuts 1 minute 10 secs from the full song. Id recommend not doing the music video for Afterlife also since they do the same thing there, If you do the Buried Alive music video it has words censored also. Try Spotify if you have it.
