I really wish you would react to side b as well, it's even less common but I have seen people do it. The five or six songs on the other side are standalone songs, not part of the concept album, but to me they are all bangers in their own right. And one of them has Getty singing the most wistful softest heart-aching ballad, and the lyrics are beautiful. "Something For Nothing" closes out the 2112 album and it's an anthem of sorts and a deep fan favorite, and it is absolutely incredible. On every level from the lyrics down to every aspect of the musicality of it and how hard it rocks, and how positive It ultimately is. ❤

Yes, the story is true... Rush's 3rd album 'Caress of Steel' in 1975 was a commercial flop and the band was losing money on tour and deep in debt to their record company... Their manager begged the record company for 1 more record and the label heads demanded a more commercial record that they could sell to radio. However, Rush felt like everyone was against them at their lowest point and the theme of the '2112' album was "us against the world" and Neil Peart dedicated the lyrics to novelist Ayn Rand, who inspired '2112'... It was an album born of defiance - we do the music that we want and we won't compromise for anyone or anything.... If the album fails, we go back to working day jobs... but we go down swinging! When the tapes of '2112' made it to Mercury Records offices, they were stunned... They had no idea how to sell the product. Still, the album was released in 1976 and even without a radio single, there was a buzz generated by '2112' as Rush began touring to promote it and it sold gold (Their first album to sell half million copies) and then platinum by 1977, purely on word-of-mouth. It gave Rush a career moving forward and creative freedom to do so.

You should read (or watch one of the documentaries) about the back story to this album in terms of RUSH and their career. 2112 really speaks to where RUSH was at the time. They were being told basically that they needed to produce music to conform to the industry or they would get dropped by their record label. The "Priests" if you will, were not happy with RUSH producing the long epic pieces. RUSH didn't like what they were being told and recorded 2112 as basically a final flash of glory, fully well expecting that this was going to be their last piece, basically flipping the middle finger to the record labels and the industry. The 2112 story can actually be related back to RUSH themselves in a way. The fantastic thing about this was, 2112 was HUGELY received by rock fans all around the world. The 2112 album became a huge hit and forever changed that course or the RUSH journey. From then on RUSH did what THEY wanted (as they always have) and the industry was no longer in a position to tell them what to do. Quite the remarkable story and much better told by RUSH themselves. There are a few documentaries where they talk about this. A fantastic story. So glad it turned out the way it did.

Glad you posted that. The back story has always been one of the best in rock history. Although Neil was never an acolyte of Ayn Rand, her strident writings on individualism and the dangers of an authoritarian government were instrumental in his and his bandmate’s own development. 2112 was Rush’s grand finale to their record company, except they knocked it outta the park, and became who they are, on their own terms.

This song was my introduction to Rush, one of my older brothers was a big music buff and when talking one day I mentioned that I loved the drums, he said ok check this guy out 🤯 I was about 12 I'm now 60 and been a huge fan ever since that first listen. Waiting for each and every album to come out was agonizing 😬 but certainly more than worth the wait. 🥁🎸🎹🎶
@chalfo21 күн бұрын
There's a couple of definitions for Syrinx - first as you note (are the priests "a pain in the neck"?) and second being a bird's larynx. In UK 'bird' is a synonym for prisoner (like jail-bird). Dunno which Neil is using but both kind of fit. Anyway, here's my standard explanation (copied and pasted from elsewhere) Whilst most will tell you that it's an F.U from Rush to the Record label (telling them to be more commecial) it's actually a full analogy of this situation (very meta). I may not be exactly correct about absolutely everything but this is what makes sense to me: Protagonist represents Rush The Priests represent the Record Label/Music industry (just let people "make their own music") The guitar represents Rush's music (ideas/creations) The Elders respresent Tradtion/Wisdom/the ideals (i.e. how it should be - common sense "left the world long ago") In the song the protagonist k*lls himself but in the animation he lives - why? When in the process of writing the song... Rush were sure they were commiting professional su*cide with this and that they were ABOUT TO have a huge fight with the record label over it (Grand Finale having no lyrics until closing). The Animation,on the other hand, was done to celebrate their 40th anniversary, so of course, by then, it was known that Rush prospered and didn't d*e, so the protagonist lived on.

For those old enough, there was a movie that came out in the 70s that shook the movie-going community. A movie of the likes that had never been done before where nothing was even remotely like it. It changed how we watched movies. The name of the movie was The Exorcist. 2112 was much the same way. No one ever made a song anything like 2112. It was in its own space and shook the power music community unlike anything before it. You look around now and there are literally dozens and dozens of musicians who were spawned by this great band. No band spawned more musicians than The Beatles, but I would put Rush in second place.

I have this triple tracked. Temples is Quadruple tracked. When my sunroof is open and windows down and my premium sound is on 11, I shatter windows for a mile around. When we heard this it was band kids in the band room after school hearing clips on a boom box. It was college kids walking down the hall hearing some dude sharing this album with his roommates/friends. It was never on the radio. There was no 2010's cartoon distracting us from the genius of Geddy's bass lines, of Neils greatest composition, Of Alex's soul piercing riffs. Rush became Rush because of the enormous finger of ART played to the money executives. This IMO is Neils greatest work

HA!!!! So you're 29 years old. LOL. Yeah 2112 is like the first peak of the band. The second of course being Moving Pictures. The influence of Ayn Rand's writing can be found all over this. Not that the band necessarily agreed with her point of views but the story is very much like her book, Anthem about a future society written in 1938. Loved your reaction. As ALWAYS
@ZombieJesus198721 күн бұрын
Rush wrote this song as a big "Fuck you" to the record company. Their previous album, Caress of Steel was their first real attempt at writing these big epic songs , it had both a 12 minute song and a 20 minute song, and at the time the album was a commercial failure and the record company told them to write a follow up that was radio friendly. Instead they gave us 2112 as a response to the record company trying to control their art, and it ended up being a commercial and critical success, which paved the way for Rush to pretty much do whatever they want creatively.

So, rather than saying that this song gave you Star Wars vibes, it would have been more accurate to say that Star Wars gave you a strong Rush vibe! : ) PS - Did I mention reacting to The Garden, played live in Dallas in 2012? Mike Oldfield is another artist that responded with an artistic "middle finger" to his record company asking for an album full of radio-friendly songs. In 1990 he delivered an album ("Amarok") with just one song, running at 60 minutes 3 seconds; they had to cut it in half to press it into vinyl. It's wild, and has no cuts that can be played on radio. It even includes a message in Morse code saying "FU RB", with RB being the initials of the record's company boss (Richard Branson, of Virgin Music). Most of Mike Oldfield fans consider "Amarok" one of his best pieces ever. If you ever listen to it, beware! , as it was also made to scare the beejeezus of Richard Branson: RB would always play the latest Mike Oldfield's album on his car while driving around town.
@svenidol21 күн бұрын
"Star Wars vibes"... If so, Star Wars took inspiration from Rush, not vice versa, since 2112 was released about 15 months before Star Wars. 😂
@somecallmetim211218 күн бұрын
Neil based this story on a short by Ayn Rand called "Anthem". The prose excerpts in the animation (that weren't lyrics) were, I believe, excerpts from "Anthem". The story ends with the Elder Race (our three guys!) returning and overthrowing the Priests, freeing the people from the cloak of conformity enforced by the Federation of the Red Star. ('Home to tear the temples down, home to change'). The Elder Race has assumed control, Father Brown freaks out as he watches his power disappear, and the banner of the Red Star disintegrates into dust. Good wins. Freedom of thought wins. This was Rush's FU to the record industry.

Being a 60 yr old Canadian male.... It amazes me how many women are reacting to RUSH and going all GOO GOO over it. Yet in Rushes time there were so few women at there concerts tha in a scene from a movie that RUSH is doing a Cameo in., on the way back to their dressing room Neil is joking that he thinks he saw 5 women inn the audience and one of the others says "That must be a record!". Why would that be in the scene if there wasn't a hint pf the truth? So do women reactors changed so much since 30 yrs ago? Or, are they all reacting with ah and wonder because it will attract male subscribers? I'm not pointing fingers, it's just a thought that has been floating though my mind for say the last 6 months. Man vs Masses. Individualism vs collectivism. Massively influenced by the writings of Ayn Rand at the time (Neil evolved beyond it). The end statement "we have assumed control" is deliberately ambiguous. It doesn't matter who assumes control, they're the bad guys. It's very anti authoritarian and anti establishment. The Priests are actually a representation of critics, which were terribly unkind to RUSH.
