Thank you, Tom for taking the time to help those of us not fortunate enough to know someone who personally can instruct the advancement of playing theatre organ music better. Your explanations are clear and spot on! Cheers!

I have just discovered your videos. I have played theatre organ over 40 years and had a 10 rank Wurlitzer, Moller, Estey, hybrid in my home until I lost it in a house fire. I now built a VTPO in an old Marr& Colton console. The sound stinks after having pipes for 20 years. Your videos are bringing me back to life at the console since I rarely play any more. Thanks.
@KeyboardSkillsPro5 жыл бұрын
Jim Delighted you watched the videos and that they have inspired you to play again. Whilst the sound or 'real' pipes is like nothing else the modern electronic organs come close for the home player. I would try Hauptwerk for your VTPO setup as there is a free version for home play. Combine this is the Paramount 3/10 free sound set and you will get a nice home setup. For details my distance learning theatre organ lesson get in touch via my website www.tomhorton.co.uk - you'll also find a rather Wurlitzer CD album you might enjoy for Xmas! Best regards Tom

Greetings Tom from another sunny day in the Algarve. We are disappointed not to have been able to meet you all again at the UK Lowrey Extravaganza. We have been without our Imperial for far too long and hope to arrange for it to be moved from France before the end of the year. Very many thanks for sharing your decades of experience with us. All the best - David.

Thank you Tom, I am following your tutorials with interest. I think I have these particular patterns down already but others won't have so it is still a very valuable lesson. I am a fan of your playing. When you are demonstrating that famous brand, I always enjoy your sections on the organ sounds without any auto accompaniment.

Thanks Tom for a fascinating tutorial. I played a lot of 'popular' organ which I was in my teens then went the classical route and really want to get back that freedom of playing anything. This has helped.

You do not need formal lessons, but a good musical ear. But you must learn to read basic music, and understand the theory. Easy Play Today books are great for this ! ! !

I was going to say exactly that, Richard. I learned these bass and rhythm patterns on a leaky old 24-bass when I was a teenager; now I have a 120-bass, I can use the contra-bass buttons to do all sorts of fancy patterns. It has no electronics - just air and reeds. Wise words, Tom.

Accordions are fantastic instruments. They are very theatre organ like, being reed organs of course. I have the ORLA KX 10 keyboard - it contains 40 of the best accordion samples ever made. I have now linked it to my computer to play a MIGHTY MIDITZER ! ! !

Oh, man! How cool and totally useful. I just recently restored a 1922 Morton, and I LUV her. Yet, being a pianist all my life, I am struggling to get my left foot to behave! I have been a stride/ ragtime man, and it is tough to re-think things. Thanks, man.

Chord patterns are quite easy - jog them along up and down, while you sing the melody to yourself - as you pretend you are Reginald Dixon ! My first Reg rhythm was for the tune SWEET AND LOVELY.

Wonderful!! I've played piano almost all of my life, and was finally overjoyed to start pipe organ lessons a few years ago ...only to have to quit 'cause I lost my job! :,-( But playing a theater organ is my dream; ultimately to play silent movie accompaniment! So thank you for a nice little "re-starter" video - I'll definitely use these techniques when I start lessons again one day!! Thank you, Tom - you've made a happy new fan today!! :-)

I have rewatched this video to try and finally get my brain and feet to master the Rumba. Out of curiosity do you have any generalised suggestions for a quickstep beat? The Mayfair Quickstep for instance is such a classic at the Tower Ballroom (often paired with Sweet & Lovely I believe). Thank you for these great videos Mr Horton.
@KeyboardSkillsPro5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the videos, Jacob - I’m pleased you’ve found them useful. Quickstep: pedal chord pedal chord is ok (4/4) or ‘chugging’ chords on every beat can work too. Tom

Hello Tom just to say I am starting to take piano lessons after a number of years and I hoping the piano will build me up to both the theatre & classical organ and these learning skills are fantastic, PS mentioning the Latin styles of playing could you play the tune Perfidia please? Because that’s my favourite tune, especially either to the Rhumba or Cha Cha.
@KeyboardSkillsPro7 жыл бұрын
+Paul NUFC Smith well done Paul - good luck with the lessons. I’ll try and include Perfidia in a future video - lovely piece.

Don' t forget that the most basic beginner books can teach you alot about music, and about playing in different styles. Then you can create your own arrangements.
