Hi Steve hope your well, I was thinking back to when my mum used to have the mail order catalogue's around the late 1970s, there were a couple of single manuel organs for sale, I think one was called a Gem rodeo or wizard, and the other one was an Echo organ. I doubt if any are still around now but always wondered what they sounded like.

This was the first sort of professional rig i ever used live with bands back in the late 80's. I couldn't afford a Hammond and Leslie, and Derby organ centre had this collecting dust in the corner along with a lovely big old Sharma Leslie clone. It actually sounded really decent through this cab, as good as the Hammond X5 and Leslie 760 that was my next rig. And yes, I used to carry it by myself by that big chrome rail at the front. Lovely recital of Stereotype by the way 🙂 (Oh and Steve, can you repair Bird organs?? I have 2 that haven't worked for years, one of which I think is one of Jerry Dammers old ones!!) He rang me up last week wanting to buy it off me!!

Brilliant! Yes I can repair them - I have lots of Bird organ spares and things as one of the original Bird engineers donated me a huge box of parts and plans etc. I have one Duplex MKII in my pile of repair projects.. Shoot me an email on Vintagekeysstudio.com and we can talk! :)

Thank you for bringing us this! I used to like the Farfisa Professional Duo back in the dark ages. I recall most Farfisa models having great reverb, some could even be played as a stop. The Pro series was good through a Leslie I seem to remember. Looks like good fun too.

The knob marked "Extra Men" is hilarious. These videos are like getting to hang out with your insanely talented best friend in his music room. I do have one serious question, though. Who was this organ marketed for? It's hard to imagine a pro or even semi-pro keyboard player wanting the extensive rhythm module, but it seems really overdesigned for an average home player. I can only imagine what it must have cost new.
@VintageKeysStudio
@VintageKeysStudio 2 ай бұрын
Thanks very much! Yes Extra Men is brilliant. I personally would have preferred extra Women. I reckon this organ was for pro use - they probably offered each buyer the Super partner as an add on in the organ shop. I bet there are examples with just a blank panel there.

Used to have one of these, bought from a nice chap in Northampton who demonstrated it through his Leslie. It came with gig bag and oh my god it was a hard thing to move around. My favourite bit was playing with the bravissimo and still got some recordings of it somewhere. Sadly that far fish a went to meet it’s death a few years later in a village called moniaive.

It's so similar to the Hammond X-5 sold by Hammond-Suzuki in the mid-late '70s! That were originally made by a Japanese company called Ace Tone as a very fair transistorised Hammond emulation; so much so that when Hammond was bought by Suzuki, they bought the design and rebadged it as the Hammond X-5. The Porta-B used the same tech but added some bells and whistles. This more resembles the Porta-B, but with Farfisa's own fripperies. I'm sure they must have licensed the Hammondy bits. Incidentally, when I was 18ish, I had a Hammond X-5 and an entry level home Farfisa with a simpler version of the rhythm box, with it's insane 'walking bass; and arpeggiator. Fun fact - on those boxes, you can combine upto three different rhythms to wacky effect. My favourite combination was March, Bossa Nova and Waltz. Stick that on a fast tempo with walking bass through overdrive - voila! Instant drum 'n' bass!

It’s how you look at it. I wouldn’t call it a good Hammond alternative. The fun starts when one uses the automated stuff. Put a delay on that and it becomes very spacey. Great for 70ies, trippy, minimalist, Berlin synth school inspired samba ‘n stuff. 🤪
