Came to BM3 pretty late in the game, but have been having a lot of fun with it. This video, despite being a bit of a head-scratcher, has significantly demystified a large part of the workflow. Many thanks :)

Beatmaker is great. The more I use it the more amazed I get. It does take some getting used to, but the muscle memory always happens eventually, unless something is so counter intuitive that when you use other apps, it undoes things. But bm3 is intuitive enough. The only thing is that there are a ton of things so sometimes I tap wrong and lose myself in a screen i didn’t expect . But it’s so worth it because of the power. I am no huge beat making expert but I can’t imagine anything deeper. Thanks for another informative video. Your videos are important. You go beyond the usual boring stuff and find cool things that others dont know. I am sure a lot of people get scared by the depth of bm3 and go back to the simple basic sequencer that they know because it has no features. My guess is that bm3 would have so many more users if there were more very hand holding videos aimed at clearing up the intimidation factor. I see Auria Pro in a similar light. If anyone would make up their mind to get over the intimidation factor then they would up their ability to create better stuff by using the best apps instead of the cheapest and easiest. Its great to open an app and bang out a quick beat in minutes, but what then. You don’t have to be a genius to use those more professional apps, you only need good tutorials and determination. I wonder how many people open bm3 or Auria and start crying after playing with it for an hour or so and not getting anywhere. Every tap brings up a different thing. I wonder if there are tutorials aimed at getting beginners interested in the really good apps instead of the easiest ones. I mean beginners to music making in general. Too many end up with a ton of cheap boring apps that don’t do much. They waste so much time doing not much only because it’s so easy. They miss out. I haven’t seen any good videos aimed at them, made by good musicians or people like you who are good technically. The odd video hear and there is not enough. I imagine a series called “From zero to music maker using a pro app”

That is a good idea and one I have been tossing around for a while. I just have to actually compose some music with it and others, and then break it down into bite size chunks.

Nice one, Mitch :) Song / Scene / Pattern stuff is the most strangely complicated part of BeatMaker 3 imho. Good job on this explanation :)

I watch your BM3 playlist frequently, very helpful. On the moving/dragging issue: you can only extend or shorten a segment from the right of the segment. This gave me problems too. It’s just how they designed it. The left of the segment only allows moving. If you want to edit the segment from the start (left) you have to slice it. To go back to before the edit you can either undo or pull the original segment or the part you sliced out from the pattern helper and put it back. Thanks again for all the work on this. Hope you do some more videos.

This explanation I have been waiting for. I couldnt wrap my head around this scene/song modes. That with the "deselected" pattern made my day because I really had problems with that. Thanks Mitch!

Glad this helped. It actually helped me even more by creating this video. As I explained it, I understood it a little better.

When I lay a beat in song mode I can't see patterns in scene mode if that makes sense??
@TheAudioDabbler6 жыл бұрын
it doesn't automatically add patterns in scene mode. In scene mode, you need to add the patterns you want to each scene. This creates a performance area similar to a launchpad or Ableton live. The song mode is more for linear arrangements.

This seems so complex. But thank you for your time and patience. I'll watch this a few more times to get jist of it.

Oh yeah, I also noticed that annoying sync issues. Especially if I apply timestretching on certain sample. I thought that it is happens because of insufficient cpu power of my old iPad 3, but now I doubt it.
@YoungZ13147 жыл бұрын
The issue with the patterns overlapping is the song grid. It's trying to snap into a specific place in the song view. Works the same way with the midi editor (piano roll). Still a helpful video. I will be giving scene mode a look now

Is the only reason you see it in song mode way to the right because you were talking while you were recording? I paused you and did my recording the usual way I had been taught with count ins and it is on the left.
@TheAudioDabbler6 жыл бұрын
not sure. I will have to go back to the video and see. Maybe I should see about doing another video to help explain this topic. Still seems confusing to some people.

The program is super deep but man the workflow is confusing.... So I made an 8 bar beat but could only hear 4 bars of it.. turn out I had to set the loop marker in song mode not pattern mode?? then after watching you I found how to make scenes but couldn't copy and paste individual patterns only the full amount of clips per scene? this can't be right.. also, somethings I can't add another group of hits or another instrument and found I needed to kill the app and reload it! it's 50% me and 50% janky..

Yes and yes. I wish they would just port the sampler out and make it its own app. I love using BM3 for sound design but overall the app can be confusing and does have some bugs. It works great for some people.

Hi, thanks for this video. I’ve got a question about how to create an instrument like for a synth or a piano from a sample. I mean, if I’ve got a C5 sample of a synth, will I be able to play it in polyphonic mode? Sorry for my English, I’am from France. Best regards

I can’t get it to display the patterns on the left like that. Did they remove this with an update?

So can you import "songs" into scene mode or do they have to be recorded there?

I have an issue with trying to run synthscaper through beatmaker 3. Even after doing midi setup i dont get any sound from synthscaper. Just wondering if its just me or if you've had any issue with it, if you've tried it
@TheAudioDabbler7 жыл бұрын
I will test and see, not sure if I have Synthscaper but I know I had issues before the update, and since the latest update, IAA has worked out great so far.

So its like Gadget as far as layout for the one mode?
@TheAudioDabbler7 жыл бұрын
If you are referring to the scenes then yes sort of except the tracks are horizontal instead of vertical. Which makes things a little weird if you are use to playing with ableton or launchpad, since their tracks run vertical.
@Rustik17227 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is what I meant. Comment was while watching video and you were explaining it. Great job on the BM3 vids. Hats off.
@SunCrushr7 жыл бұрын
More like Bitwig, because of the horizontal layout.

If this is supposed to be a beginner video I am going to need a little more help. For instance, how did we get into scene mode?
@slimbeaux6 жыл бұрын
Recorded in Scene mode is what I meant.
@AmpApps4 жыл бұрын
There’s actually a lot to unpack here. A lot of great tips. Part of the problem with synchronization is that you don’t get a lead in when you are in scene mode. You get this problem if you try to do it with audio as well. You have to watch the position indicator in the upper left corner to see when the beginning of the cycle starts. KZbinr TickTock has a video showing the use of scenes to create a song template it is very interesting. Here is a link. Thanks for this video, Mitch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/baiZiot7rZmFr9k

BeatMaker 3 is a very very deep and complex app that requires a decision from the user to stick with it. It’s not an app that you open and bang out quick beats the first time, because it does so much. Once you know it, then you can bang out quick beats, but the things you can do with the beats is incredible. My point is that the best you can do in order to benefit from a good video like this, is to learn the basics of BM3 first. You will not find a video on how to master bm3 in 5 munutes. There are plenty of apps for beginners that do not even need tutorials that can make decent sounding patterns with some basic automation. But if you want to touch on professional stuff, you need a deep app like bm3. But don’t expect to become a pro by watching the odd 5 minute video. You have to invest time and effort to learn the app. I think that you want a quick, instant super tutorial that show you how to master a professional app without investing time on your part. You will not find one. Take the time. It’s worth it. Or stick with a much simpler app like Korg Gadget. I love gadget.
@perrypelican94765 жыл бұрын
TheAudioDabbler don’t be sorry, Mitch. It’s an excellent video. The problem might be that BM3 is not so easy to use. Maybe people expect to run before they can walk. If someone does not have the basics understood then this video is too advanced. I don’t say the video is too advanced for everyone, but you must know how to use bm3 before checking out tricks and tweaks. The concept of song vs scenes needs to be grasped first. It might be better if videos had prerequisites, like in school where you need to have taken certain courses before taking an advanced course.
