Superb. agree with one of your final points about the arm. The back of the arm is not carbon ( where the counter weight attaches) and is prone to breakage. They need to sort that before anyone had the confidence to outlay another £400. + pounds on the upgrades .

Super helpful video! In the market for a turntable replacement and had my heart set on a Rega but now it is not sourced by the vendor that built my theatre system that includes KEF reference speakers and surround. They recommended the Debut Carbon EVO as an option and I've been on the fence. Even was/am considering the Rega 3 special edition that is more than double the price in USD (but LOTS of extras in 2023) and just getting it from another supplier though this eliminates the great support I get from current vendor. Where I am now (and your video reinforces my direction) is I've ordered the EVO in white gloss, am adding an acrylic platter, and changing out the cartridge for a Sumiko Moonstone cartridge. I was looking at the the 2M Blue or 2M bronze but Sumiko is the brand coming with the TT so I decided to keep the cartridge in the same family. What I hadn't added and will given your recommendation is the power source and the aluminum sub platter. With all this the total still comes out about $500 USD less than the Rega 3. I'm hopeful all this is a good decision. Thanks!

Thanks for this video, Paul. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these upgrades. I currently have the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (about 5 years now) and have replaced the platter with the Acryl-it, replaced the 2M Red with the 2M Blue and purchased a Michell Engineering Clamp (all worthwhile upgrades for me). My next upgrade would involve better isolation (like a Ground-it or perhaps a think butcher block as many have suggested). I'm also thinking of purchasing a Tube Box S2 phono preamp (my Sansui B-2101/C-2101 amp and preamp and ADS L1290 speakers produce a very sweet sound so am curious how the Tube Box S2 would affect the sound). The one thing you mentioned that had me thinking how it would affect the sound is the high power-it. I can see it affecting the speed stability which would impact wow and flutter, but that's it. It does not touch the electric signal path from the cartridge to the preamp so am not sure how it would impact the sound quality. Can you elaborate further?
@TheAudiophileMan3 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig - I find that bigger, more powerful, better *quality* power supplies produce a more confidant sound. Weak supplies give a sense of stress and strain. As if the music is running out of puff. So bass has weight and mass instead of sounding like it needs a good dinner down it. A quality supply will also reject mains noise (a massive problem that too many people either ignore, denigrate or are unaware of). Get rid or reduce that and the general noise floor lowers allowing fine and subtle detail to get though.

Great video. I love modding myself. I enjoy the little steps up in sound quality that you can treat yourself to every now and again. Plus the second hand market is usually pretty good for these things, so once you've fully modded something and are ready to move to the next turntable, you can get most of your money back selling them all on. In fact if you buy second hand and buy well, you usually break even or even make a little.

Great video! Thanks for the detailed exposition. It’s a shame that YT’s algorithm didn’t show it to me earlier. I have one question though, I’ve heard that adding the acrylic subplatter will mess up the vertical tracking angle, did you have to tinker with the VTA after upgrading?
@TheAudiophileMan2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, there's no difference. In terms of fractions, there is :) The sub platter is exactly the same in terms of thickness so doesn't change the VTA. As for the main platter though? My default, basic, 'as is' EVO is ever so slightly out of alignment but not enough to cause sonic issues. Yours might be different, though. Mine has been around the houses a bit and thrown around by many couriers so it might be that. Hence, mine is slightly and I mean slightly high at the rear. Replacing the default platter and then removing the felt mat actually improves the levelling a tad. I emphasise, I'm talking fractions here. So yea. Basically, don't worry about it. If anything though, the acrylic platter right actually help. I know the sub platter was the main subject here but I thought I'd add more thoughts on the main platter, in case the acrylic upgrade was also on your list.

Hi Troy - many of the cheaper turntables out there do not allow for VTA adjustments because the feature - in and of itself - would add too much to the build budget. The EVO here, for example, can be adjusted but you need to add 'shims' to raise the arm. You can buy these from Pro-Ject. Rega offers the same service. If a turntable does not offer VTA adjustments, I advise being prepared by measuring any new cartridge and, if possible, undergoing a dealer or home-based demo to make sure the tonearm is level before you buy. This, of course, is also why packages are popular and useful because the bundles cartridge should be an ideal fit for the arm.

Love the review. I bought previous Debut Carbon DC with phono preamp. During last two months I've changed the sub platter, bought acrylic platter, removed phono preamp from it and bought iFi Zen and cartridge is next🤣 vinyl somehow sucked me in🤦🏻♂️ recently I discovered that axle on motor has strange thrust clearance. I can lift the small belt pulley up around 5mm and side play is around 0,3mm. I didn't found any forum related to this. Has the EVO motor same "issue" so I can sleep calmly as it should be like that, or I have the real issue? Thank you.

I didn't find any issues with the EVO in terms of performance to be honest.

@@TheAudiophileMan hi, so no play in motor axle on EVO? Can't say it's an issue. As you said, performance is not affected by this. At least I think so, because every time I listen, the tempo and timing of the percussions, beats...it is somehow more engaging then from WiFi streaming. And I have FLAC quality Deezer. Still the turntable sounds better. Anyway, thank you for an answer. When it's not broken, don't fix it they say🙂 Have a nice day.

I’d be curious to know how the upgraded Project table compares to the Technics 1500. How close would it get with the same cartridge?
@TheAudiophileMan2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't compare them at all because that wouldn't be the point of upgrading the EVO in the first place. You upgrade the EVO because you have very little cash and certainly not enough to buy a new, more expensive turntable...like the 1500. If you're considering buying a 1500 then you have that money. So the EVO is not the mode to be comparing the 1500 to - it's a whole different level of turntable.

How would you compare the new “Evo 2” with the Pro-Ject X1? Do you think that it would be worth it to buy the X1 from the get go or you would go down the upgrade path?

P. S. puntina solo e sempre Grado.

Hi Paul, I decided on getting the project debut carbon after watching your review. I also am following your record cleaning process with the disco antistat device. So thanks for helping me out with your videos. I have a really newbie question for you if you don't mind? The debut came with RCA cables with an earth wire in between the two leads. But I bought some other RCA's but they don't have an earth. Do I need to earth, and if so what actually needs to be earthed, and to where? So far all I've got is the turntable, a phono amp, and a Tascam SD-20M for recording my music onto an sd card. Appreciate any help. Thanks.
@TheAudiophileMan2 жыл бұрын
Some leads include the earth wire in the cable itself (the red one, I think) so you should be covered. If a separate earth cable is suppled, then attach that to the Earth screw you'll find on the rear of the phono amplifier.

Thanks for the reply, and good to know. But, no they didn't come with a ground wire, the original cable did, that's why I was concerned. If I did need one I could probably just buy one, or strip the one between the original cable? I'm still cleaning anyway, following your routine, so nearly there. I'm going to get the upgrades you mentioned also. I appreciate your reviews, and glad I found your channel. Not sure the missus feels the same way though. 🤑😆

Thanks for the review. After watching I decided to buy the cork it mat. Sound was improved my only issue is when I remove a record the cork mat sometimes sticks to the record. Any idea how I can stop this.

The psu upgrade is essential. The original psu is worthless and should be binned right away. From the box the Evo is not really impressive, but it’s a good platform for upgrades. With rubber feet, a Soundeck platter mat and an Audio Technica record stabilizer it really starts to sing. I guess a 2M Blue stylus would be the cherry on the cake.

curious what you think the difference is between the Debut and the RPM1. in the US they're the same price of $599. people seem to prefer the Debut generally I like the smaller profile of the RPM1. if the sound quality is really different though I'll make due
@TheAudiophileMan2 жыл бұрын
When you say "Debut" you mean the EVO? I'd lean in its direction, sure. I like the RPM1 there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and it's a fine design that can also be upgraded. If you like the look of the RPM1 then, by all means, go for that. You won't be disappointed. Nevertheless, I think the EVO has the edge.

Excellent video Paul. I have upgraded my Project Debut Carbon with aluminium sub platter, acrylic platter and Goldring G1045 cartridge. I believe you mentioned quite rightly that the acrylic platter does not need the felt mat. I feel however i feel that the vinyl does not sit solidly on the acrylic surface therefore i will be buying a record clamp or, if using a felt mat on the acrylic platter, do you think that impairs the sound quality or makes no difference? I will get round to testing myself but still in the process of upgrading the rest of my system.

I use a really thin felt mat with a record clamp on my acrylic platter and it doesn't impair the sound quality on my NAD c558 turntable.

Hi, I really enjoyed the video and I've bought a few of the upgrades. I have a Debut Carbon and it unfortunately seems to be the AC rather than DC version. I only figured this out when I bought the High Power It and it was incompatible with the Speedbox S I've been using and when I connected it directly to my turntable it didn't spin at all. Do I have any options for an equivalent to the High Power It that's compatible with my turntable?

I'll ask - be back ASAP.

Here's Pro-Ject's reply: "If it’s the Debut Carbon DC with 15V DC power supply, then they can switch to the High Power-IT. If it’s the Debut Carbon AC with captive 230V mains lead, then there’s no other power supply available."

@@TheAudiophileMan Thanks for this info. I may get an Evo since I could transfer most of my upgrades to it. I keep hearing that the Sumiko cartridge (included with the Evo in the US) has a warmer sound than the Ortofon. Do you have an opinion on this?

Hi Paul, sorry to bother, I wanted your opinion. I’ve got the project debut carbon evo for about a year and looking to upgrade parts. I’ve watched your you tube vid and I’m looking at two upgrades. I’m thinking the alu sub platter and torn between the acrylic platter or ortofon blue. I’ve had it a year wondered what you think would be the best combo for overall improved sound? I’m buying more first presses lately. Thanks for your feedback, great videos and from one scouser to another, keep up the good work 👍

How does acrylic plater compare with a glass plater?
@TheAudiophileMan Жыл бұрын
Given the choice, Cary, I would always go for Acrylic over Glass. The former is sonically superior, you have to spend time damping Glass so you have to factor in extra costs for a quality mat, etc.
