Absolutely great review of the best affordable (but not exhaustive) turntables up to £500 mark. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with this selection detailing the pros and cons as you go up the price and the ethos deployed by the various companies. Great work.

Thanks Paul, just found your channel. I went for the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB. About $600 here in Australia. I wanted direct drive and usb so I can record some of my favourite LPs on to computer and make cds for the car. The other thing that swayed me was the 78rpm feature by pressing 33 and 45 simulataneously. I ordered the 78 cartridge and headshell separately. There's even a slot on the top right of the turntable for safe storage. Thanks again, cheers.

Another great video Paul, just one thing the Sound Buger has a built in phono stage ( line out ) so an amp and speakers or active pair of speakers are still required. Yes I can vouch as my sound test video, its a surprisingly nice sounding unit for what it is and the money. Fingers crossed for a Yellow one in the new year.

Nice summary video Paul. I don't need a new Turntable as I am quite happy with my Linn Basik with Akito Tone Arm MK II which is 30 next year. I have changed the Stylus recently for a Audio Technica AT-VMN95EN which sounds great. Techmoan reviewed the Soundburger and he was quite pleased with it and he was able to get it running at the correct speed. It is line only and has no headphone socket. Techmoan did a video this past week to point out that a Headphone Amplifier is required to use Headphones with the Soundburger.

I also own the A-T 120XUSB. It introduces a thumping sound as the motor is pulsed while spinning the patter to maintain speed. I spoke with A-T, and they call this "cogging". They suggested adding their $49 Disk Stabilizer (AT-618) to help maintain the speed. I've tried it, and it does help, but it bothers me to spend more money for another accessory that shouldn't be necessary. I've retired my 120XUSB (but I still have it). I'll stick with my Fluance RT85T.

Since we're focused on price. The best turntable by far is anything you can find second hand locally. Currently very satisfied with a 1980 Technics SL-B3 Belt Drive Automatic that I purchased 3 weeks ago at an estate sale for $20 USD. I did have to put on a new belt from Amazon which costed me $4.29.

Nope, older electronics are a gamble, sometimes you get lucky and they work perfectly and continue to do so for many more years, sometimes you get unlucky and it seems to work but it doesn't or it works perfectly one day and the next completely dead, and without warranty, or the experience for a diy you are left with e-waste. That's why i only recommend getting old electronics if you are ok with repairing yourself if needed be

Thank you for a review that focuses on a price range that reflects the times we currently live in. However, without going high end, may I suggest you do the same thing for turntables from £500 to £1000. It's not that I think this video was poor. Far from it, but next level up is still not high high end and it would help the people that are not beginners and want to upgrade, without going mad on price. Thank you.

Fantastic video and very useful/helpful. I am considering the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO (as is called in the USA) which comes with a SUMIKO Rainier cartridge in our market. I saw that the one in your video sports an ORTOFONE Red. Which do you consider a better cartridge? And on top of that Crutchfield is running a special deal in which you get and additional Sumiko Olimpia stylus via mail after registering the turntable with the manufacturer. Soooo, which is better sounding in your estimation, the Ortofon or the Sumikos?? Thanks Much.

It’s………ok, I’m torn between buying a brand new TT, budget around £250, or, upgrading my current TT. Any advice would be appreciated, the Fluance RT82 appeals as it is not dissimilar, aesthetically to my NP S-L. Might this be a good choice, admittedly it’s slightly above budget. Thank you.

Another great video, thank you. I recently moved from a Fluance RT85 (which I highly recommend as one of the best performing tables at it’s price point) to a Schiit Sol. Yes, I bought an out of production hobbyist turntable. Here’s why: I really want to mature into a VPI Avenger or Triangle Art. However, I need to be sure that I enjoy and am able to manage the very manual setup and optimizations required for an audiophile class turntable. Probably a smart thing to do at that price point. For me, the Sol hits that mark perfectly and therefore is my “Trainer”. In addition, it performs so well that it easily leverages much higher grade phone stages and cartridges with a clear improvement in sound quality. That allows me to upgrade those critical elements now and then use them with my dream table later. My plan in process is: Vincent PHO-701 to a Sutherland 20/20 (really wish you had a review on the Sutherland) - Open to recommendations in this price point. Stock AT-VM95ENVM95 to a Zephyr MIMC - Also open to recommendations. I already replaced the anemic Sol power supply with a Sbooster BOTW linear power supply to squash a low frequency background hum and I’m deep into research on higher grade alignment tools, so I improve my setup precision.

I’m a recovering “audiophile” - if you want to spend a gillzilion $, no problem, enjoy your passion - I’m using 50 year old McIntosh electronics; 10 year old Revel book shelf speaks, with dedicated stands, speakers purchased new, discontinued 50% off, stands purchased used, 20% of original price; quality, generic inter connects & speaker wire, note, a friend, a professional sound engineer recommended the generic inter connects and speaker wire; finally, I’m using a Denon direct drive fully automatic turntable purchased 1987 + a Grado cartridge also purchased in 1987. The turntable has been in continuous use since 1987, works perfectly. Grado still supports the cartridge - you can purchase new styluses from Grado. My most important advice is to work on speaker placement - Since I no longer have a “significant other” I’m able to place my speakers out into the listening area, away from any walls. Really makes for a big improvement! 😁 Enjoy the music!

Thank you Paul! Hoping you, & the community can lend a 'non - audiophile' a helping hand? (roll eyes!) My previous second hand set-up was a NAD 533 belt drive turntable | external Integrated amp, Trio KA3700 | Gale 3010 passive speakers; broadly speaking the sound when factoring in my budget & 'unrefined ear' was good, but I changed things in favour of convenience, with less wires, and a smaller footprint etc, however the sound is HUGELY disappointing! Current set-up; ATLP5X (From all I read pre-purchase, plus your comprehensive review, a good budget turntable) | Audio Pro C5 powered speaker which, when playing digital music is fine. SO, to diagnose and rectify the problem - should I be adding an external amp & revert back to passive speakers..... I'm at risk of entering quite a rabbit hole, please send help. Thanks, all advice welcome!

Great watch! Also great more affordable turntables coming out with quiet good quality/price. Owning many turntables over the years somehow I always seem to go back to the more heavy duty vintage ones. I buy and sell every years some. Right now owning a nice serviced Garrard 4HF with Audio-Technica AT-XP5 cartridge, A Lenco B55 with custom bearing + Lenco L78 with custom bearing. These idler wheel turntables are just so rock solid with a great 'punch' and with some customisation often also having same or better wow and flutter in comparing to new turntables. But design wise I like several of the modern turntables, like Clearaudio etc.

I favor the Fluance RT-82. It has a servo motor that the RT-81 doesn't, and the RT-83 features the Ortofon red, which is not "my cup". I went with the RT-82 and put an Audio Technica VM95EN on it, along with an acrylic platter mat..... still within the price range of the RT-83. Fully satisfied. I also like the walnut finish of the Fluance, which isn't available on most turntables these days.

Give me a Rega any day. oh, and mount an ortofon red to it's tone arm ( just like on the Project Debut) and you'll have a T.Table to be proud of, with belts and motor spares available for decades to come and no fiddly fishwire antiskate arrangement either. Most important with any t.table though is proper alignment of your cartridge! it's crucial. ignoring or skimping on an alignment gauge will only accelerate wear on the vinyl, and minimize fidelity extraction from the groove. This is my best advice for a low cost entry. spend 2G, expect 10% improvement.

It is fully manual which is a bit of a pain but they have left out all the bells and whistles to pour all the development into sound quality. Well I am one of those that don't have money to burn, but I wanted to go from ceramic to magnetic (have a 1985 Panasonic all in one with a Japaneses ceramic cart record player). However I could not afford over $200 (£165 ish) So I found out that Amazon got the AT-LP3BK on sale for $169 (£139.33) unfortunately in the UK it's still being sold for £229 ($277.77) which is not a good value. I bought it instead of waiting to buy the Sound Burger (I may still get the new one when it becomes available) nor the AT-LP60X-BK. I know that I could save $20 by getting the AT-LP60X-BK, but you can't upgrade the cart if you want to (always give yourself options when you can) Later down the road when it's time to replace the stylus I'll upgrade to the LP Gear cfn3600le stylus, but for now I'm just happy to upgrade without breaking the bank. Later on I can buy a better pre-amp instead of using the built in (all though the built in is also pretty good too.) One reason for me to get the new Sound Burger would be to test used records for skips and other defects via Bluetooth before buying making it a really good tool to have when record thrifting.

I'm not in the market for a turntable - being reasonably happy with my Thorens TD150 (I'd prefer a Linn Sondek, mind!), so I just watched this out of general interest. However I did notice that the Audio-Technica LP5x has one feature you missed - it plays at 45, 33 AND 78!! I've not seen a new decent turntable with 78 since I was born. OK, you'll need a different cartridge (but a hot-swapping headshell will take care of that) - and for those of us who still have some 78s it looks like a godsend - and there are plenty of old, good recordings on 78 that have never been released in any other format.

Apologies if I missed the 78 option in the vid. Although,I did talk about that in the original review on this channel and on my website: theaudiophileman.com/at-lp5x-turntable-review-audio-technica/ So the info is 'out there', as it where.

@@TheAudiophileMan You did indeed! I stand corrected and it's my turn to apologise! Also I notice (I missed this before) that the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB also has 78rpm. What's going on? Are 78s back in fashion???? 🙂

@@Bob-us9di There is a real hard core 78 sector in the HiFi community. In fact there are some heavy-duty add on hardware accessories used by them too including micro speed variants on specialist phono amps to cater for those '78s' running at 79, 81, 82, etc. Also for those 78s utilising 101 other curves instead go the current RIAA EQ default. As for other specialisms? Well, I'm a mono fan. So I have a very expensive cart catering for my mono collection, for example. Start digging and we record weirdos start emerging from the soil :)

I just bought Audio Technica at-lp120xusb and now I'm in the search for an amplifier. My budget is up to $650 (I know it varies on destination) and I'm going to use it for my turntable and probably TV which is secondary. On turntable, I'm going to listen mostly to classical music, specifically opera, but also other kinds such as rock, hillbilly, etc. Can you recommend something to me? I'm a complete newbie in this, and so far I found that Yamaha a-s501 would be a good choice, but am not sure if there is something better for that amount money.

For classical/opera/jazz you might search for a used Integrated Vacuum Tube Amp with a Phono input(better value than a separate one). Vincent Audio or Rogue Audio that have enough power(WPC) for your speakers.

Hi, I have just Purchased a Yamaha 500, what is your opinion on it, I’m 71 Year yonder, I feel is that I was steered into buying this form a company in France call Darty , Two models that I asked for they said they do not sell them, 1 being the techniques you mentioned at the higher end, I hadn’t realised this as got streaming capabilities and Bluetooth which I don’t need, I purchased this because at the present I cannot afford to have my vintage record deck restored as I have been quoted in excess of £1600. Linn LP12, The Yamaha sounds like yes you guessed it 😢 , Do you think it’s worth spending any money on it or just leave it until I can afford to restore my Linn . ie upgrading the stylus, ??? Hi Phil, I did ask about this one when it was released but a review sample never appeared so I’ve yet to hear it. It does feature the whole Musicast thing so part of the price you’re paying is for that, don’t forget. Did you get a chance to listen to it beforehand? Don’t forget to always request a home demo so you can hear it in your own home. It seems pretty solid as a basic design but that’s all I can offer. As for the Linn thing? If you have been quoted £1600 and you see that ad a bit steep consider the Roksan turntable I reviewed on this channel. Can’t supply a link, I’m travelling. That sounds excellent at around £1,000.

And you can buy them from IKEA. The name comes from a village in Norrbotten in northern Sweden, the name also derives from the Finnish word for 'fish' or 'bay'. And now you're sorry you asked, aren't you?

Good review but you have missed probably the best selling turntable (other than the ubiquitous Chinese ceramic cartridge ten dollar specials which destroy records) which are all the variants of the Denon DP-29 FA/FE, Optimus and umpteen other brands using the same mechanism. They are good turntables producing reasonable audio quality for not much more in cost than those horrible Chinese units.

Was I correct in hearing that the Lenco had a more robust build than the Audio-Technica LP120X even though the latter sounded superior, or did I just mishear you? Wish the Lenco made a purist design. No phono preamp, no auto shut off. Wish someone made a Direct Drive for around $800 that was really robust and simple. I have a 40-year-old Linn Sondek LP12 but no nearby dealer and it is getting long in the tooth.

Friend, help me. hi, I watch your turntable reviews because I want to enter the world of vinyl. My budget is £500 for a turntable (can be without pre-amp, Bluetooth and other frills) I am considering 3 models; 1- Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO (your top 10 up to £500) 2- Rega Planar 2 (supposedly plays much much better than planar 1 - you didn't do a review) £499 3- Fluance RT84 (with Ortofon 2m blue - you didn't review) £499 My favorite type of music is Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker etc and Whiskey Blues. Can you help me make a decision by doing a comparison of these turntables in a new video on youtube. Thank you and good luck Kind Regards

Thanks for your question. In short? The Rega offers slightly better mids and treble. The EVO offers better bass but also better tonal balance. That is, the frequencies all work as a team more successfully in the EVO. The EVO is the one to go for if you plan to upgrade your turntable a bit at a time when funds allow. The Fluance is a decent performer and ideal if you want the lifestyle features it includes.

Is it just me or does Audio-Technica likes robbing other company's product designs? Technics for their actual record players and Sony for the Sound Burger....
@Trekkie4
@Trekkie4 Жыл бұрын
First things first, Audio Technica doesn't make their turntables, they're all made by 3rd party, company called Hanpin Electron. Same thing with Pioneer, Reloop and all other companies featuring the clones of SL1200. Second, as ironic as it may sound, Technics no longer owns the rights to SL1200 design. They sold it some time around early 2000s, when they closed the SL1200 product line for good. Well, until they've reopened it with Mk7 that is, which is one of the reasons why Mk7 is nowhere near the old-reliable Mk2, but that's beside the point. What matters is that they've sold the rights to none other than Hanpin Electron. Therefore, no one is robbing Technics, as they willingly sold the rights to China, hoping to make easy money from (what appeared to be) defunct product line. Of course, things didn't quite work out as they expected, to say at least but personally I don't feel bad for them, whatsoever. Essentially, they got what they wanted, and Hanpin makes some really nice turntables at considerably cheaper price than Technics ever did ... or would.

not to put a damper on your review but every time I see some one reviewing the fluance TT they always discribe it as a solid wood tt but that is misleading if you compare the rega tt and the pro-ject a1 tt they are more sold wood than the fluance if you look inside you will see a well constructed tt but very hollow you have the motor circuit board a few bits of wiring all done well but its HOLLOW!!! everybody that reviews it says its solid wood no its a wood box!!! very empty it really bothers me when I hear them say its solid it would be nice since they charge alot for a wood box with very little in it not pooping on fluance I love the way it looks but its not made in canada but china there are a lot of other brands branded in china that are built the same way but are cheaper this really bothers me I wish when reviews are done that the reviewer knows what he is talking about you got to know the item you are telling us about we are depending on you for accurate and detailed reviews since fluance charges alot for these we should get all details not just guessing JRo

Even so, your intro point is rather moot :) And when I produce videos, from this creator's point of view? Everything in the video is necessary. Essential. Important. Critical. Otherwise I wouldn't include it/them in the first place. If you disagree (as you do) there are tools to assist you, as I say.
