I am 62 years old male - 9.2 handicap. I still play an R15 TaylorMade Driver, changed my golf shaft to actually a cheaper Grafalloy shaft ($42.00USD) vs the Fujikura ($150+ shaft) and gained about 12-15 yds and improved my consistency of strike. I currently carry my drives about 250 yds on average with about 10-20 yds of roll. So I agree that nothing this year was a game changer for me on the longer end of my bag. But I did add into my bag a new set of Edison Wedges. These wedges helped me tighten my distance control (carry) because they are more forgiving on slightly mishits - which keeps me out of bunkers or water in the front of the green. Also this has also led to much closer shots to the pin. I did also test out the Cleveland wedges but it did not have as tight a dispersion on distance carried as the Edison Wedges. Also they did not feel as good as the Edison Wedges. It makes sense - since these are commonly referred to as "Scoring Irons" that you should be using more forgiving wedges to minimize your misses and maximize your scoring opportunities. Now next on my list is a new putter.

This is excellent advice...I was chasing the longer clubs at the top of my bag, thinking I needed something besides my 5 & 7 Halo xl FW's, but then I realized new wedges were what I really needed. I now have Cleveland CBX wedges 52, 56, and 60 and am so glad I focused on the short end of my bag--much better idea--great clubs from Cleveland! Thanks for the video.

I have Tour Edge C523 irons (game improvement) and Cleveland CBX wedges (48/54/60). I am PROUD of my wedge control, and these wedges are so easy to strike and manipulate. I've recently put my old Cleveland HB Launcher (2014) driver in the bag while my Paradym Triple Diamond is getting a new shaft built, and it did so well at the range that I might sell the Paradym. We're in an age of diminishing returns on new gear, and my bag validates that for me.

I’m 55 years old, a 7.9 index…I play the Callaway CB X Forged irons. I agree with you 100%, I change my driver shaft on occasion but my biggest improvement came from adding Titleist Vokey wedges with a bunch of bounce on them. I play a 60° K grind vokey with 14 degrees of bounce and a 54° D grind vokey with 12 degrees of bounce….game changer, for me.

71, 6 handicap, Vokey 60°, 12° bounce, got sooooooooooooo tired of compacted bunkers where the bounce was ineffective resulting in thinning shots (no, not technique, I have a great short game which maintains my low handicap at 71). Just put the new 4° ‘T’ Grind Vokey in the bag, and it is absolutely fantastic, takes me back years to when it was more skill than modern engineering. It just cuts through compacted sand, brushes the grass for high flop shots, seriously, go try one, and I am not a ‘golf snob’ but you do need a bit of short game golfing ability. Watch Seve’s ‘Short Game Video’, set in Dubai, best teaching video EVER. Best wedge yet that Vokey has produced.

A couple of years back, I did what everyone did: I bought 5-PW Taylormade Stealth Irons and a set of fitted wedges. I have no doubt that the wedges if I were to practice enough, would be great. But I now have four clubs in the bottom of the bag that look and feel pretty different. I've struggled with distance control ever since. This season, I've completed my iron set with eBay purchases. I now have 5-SW of Stealth irons. I stand over them now and because they all look similar, I seem to be able to get the distance control spot on. Massive game changer for me. I still wish I could putt!

I'm the guy you spoke about: cavity back irons, blade wedges. I struggled all season with my wedges this year. I want to have fun playing golf. So I'll be trading my blades for cavity back wedges with a lightweight graphite shaft next year. I'm 70 years old. Also plan to spend more practice time on shots from 50yds and in.

When I first started playing golf at the age of 14, I would go to the local course on a Saturday morning and carry clubs for members. I remember one gentleman took the time to invest in me by asking me about my aspirations for the game of golf. I explained that I wanted to learn to play. He gave me one piece of advice. He said the game is not won on the tee box but around the green. He promised that if I would practice 75% on putting and chipping and the rest on my driver and irons, I would be a good and consistent player. With all that said, I wasn't that disciplined, and my short game isn't what it could be. Equipment is the key. Just as you said Andy, I have an old set of secondhand Volkes, 50 degree and 56 degree. My irons are outdated, 2008 Big Bertha irons and they were also secondhand from Ebay. 67 years old, 19 handicap, iron clubhead speed about 65 mph, so a full bag fitting is in my near future. Christmas can't come soon enough. Love the channel.

I have two old Maltby wedges, a 56 Sand Slider, and a 60 Lob slider. Big, wide sole, super easy to learn distances. I have spares in my shop for assembly when these are worn out. You can stop the ball like crazy. For a lot of chipping, I use toe down chipping up to 7 iron. It works well. I use a putting stroke and choke down on them. My irons are also Maltby, 851s. They do not make them any more. Super wide sole. Hard to work the ball, but they go straight. Love them. I'm 65, and 12 handicap. 3W is my driver, 41.5" shaft. Then 5W, 7W, 9W, 11W.

Agree Andy, I changed to Ping Glide wedges 50, 54 and 58 degree loft about 3 years ago as I also play cavity back irons. I didn’t really notice any difference around the green but on full shots they’re so much more forgiving than the blade type premium wedges. I have just now changed back to a Cleveland zipcore raw 58 degree as I do like the little better feel on the delicate little shots and lobs around the green, but the 50 and 54 degree are staying.

67 old, I have two sets of irons, first one is a Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Pro KBS lite shafts with the help of 3 wedges (SM9 -48°, Cleveland RTX588-52° and SM9 K sole 58°); my second set is an old Ben Hoggan graphite shaft FTX from 4 down to F wedge that I complete with the SM9-58°. I tend to be tired after 12 holes with the Mizuno set and find to be more competitive with the Ben Hoggan set. The SM9-58° is really a great wedge for bunkers and strong roughs.

I'm 71, a 12 handicap. Can't hit a driver to save my life, tried everything - loft, shafts. My old Cobra 3 wood set to 13.5 degrees can't be beat. A little short, but I'm in the fairway, and know how to play 5 wood and hybrids to make up the distance. Plus I won't spend $600 on a club I can't hit.

Well Andy, ZX7 mk 1 irons in the bag with Cleveland zipcore 4 wedges with 10⁰ bounce. Love them. Despite being forged, the irons have a bit of a cavity and are quite forgiving. The wedges don't have the cavity but are still forgiving enough. I'd be interested in trying out the cbx though.

I've got Ping G irons 5-PW for a few years. They're obviously GI irons for a 15/16 HI golfer. However I had 2 vokey wedges at the top end which were beautiful forged clubs and were great when I pured the strike but overall delivered very inconsistent results where it mattered most.. I watched one of your videos a few years back where you first raised the issue of ave golfers with cavity back irons mistakenly using "fancy" blade type wedges to the detriment of our short game and ability to score. In that video you tested and recommended Cleveland CBX2 cavity back wedges. Your video content made perfect sense to me to the extent that I bought the CBX2 wedges to replace the fancy vokeys. Probably the best equipment decision I ever made as the consistency of my wedge play has significantly improved.

i210 irons and Mizuno S18 wedges - wedges are getting a bit old so due for a replacement but at the time were the more forgiving wedge in Mizuno's line up. I carry a 50, 54 & 58 degree wedges. I do think that a good custom fit is essential for wedges. For most players who carry 2 or 3 specialist wedges, each wedge does a different job and therefore there is no need for all the wedges in your bag being the same model.

I have the Smart Sole 58bsand wedge and it basically removes the need to practice your bunker game as it will always pop you out if you put a half decent swing on it. My only criticism is that due to the extremely high bounce of it, makes it much less useful off firm fairways. So I have to carry 4 wedges instead of 3. Recently I figured out how to hit out of the bunker with my lower bounce wedge (thanks to a video by Jason Day, so I can finally drop the SS Sand wedge out of the bag. But if I'm playing in a scramble or I'm feeling really tired, I will pop it back in the bag again, just for the forgiveness.

I am for the summer season when the grass is grown and thick. I could probably use those CB4s once the grass turns brown and chipping surfaces become thin.

I concur, Sir. I have Rtx3 50,54,58. But in my bag is 50 cbx4. Rtx3 54 for bunkers. Smartsole 58. And of course the Ping ChipR 😅 Great video Andy. You're preaching to the converted 👍

Imo, I brought the cbx4 s , they stuffed them, to sharp. Went back to my cbx2 s, chalk and cheese, cbx2s far superior imo.
