"Bang Bang" Lyrics:
• Another bang bang shoot’em up movie, pride and vengeance all around
Another bang bang shoot’em up movie, meant to blow my mind, make my heart pound
Bridges and tempers on fire
please turn it off I'm tired
Of bang bang bang shoot’em up movies
Have you ever had a gun pointed directly at you
And there isn't any doubt, it's loaded and ready to go
Well, I have twice and I don't recall any heroes on the scene
Just adrenaline and fear and a few souls who have unfortunately seen
A lotta bang bang shoot’em up movies, people putting people in the ground
bang bang shoot’em up movies, meant to turn my head, make my heart pound
fiction and commerce conspire
please turn it off I'm tired
Of bang bang bang shoot’em up movies
I live in the country because I love peace and quiet
But all of my neighbors have closets full of machine guns
And every Sunday they’re out there pretending to be Rambo
And I’m in here pretending like Sunday is still sacred
Conceal and carry your fear
don't need no weapons here
I've had all I can stand
Of the bloodthirsty leading man
If you think there isn't any connection between
All the violence you see and real life and what's on screen
well it seems painfully clear to me that you're living in a fantasy
Another bang bang shoot’em up movie
Living room like a battle ground
A bang bang shoot’em up movie
Meant to push the envelope, make me say ‘wow’
If I never hear gunfire again I'll be fine
so please turn it off I'm tired
of bang bang bang bang bang bang bang
bang bang bang

I was recently called to serve on a jury that reviewed details of a burglary/kidnapping/murder case. After seeing evidence and hearing testimony all day for 3 weeks this song quickly became my theme song, and a way for me to unwind. Thank you Avett's & Others for the reminder that we've become immune to unnecessary violence, and serving as an example that there is still good in this world.

I love bang bang shoot ‘em up movies (can I get an amen for John Wick?). I like shooting guns and appreciate their craftsmanship. The boys’ harmonies are nice, and I will note that Sundays aren’t so sacred that the Avetts aren’t perfectly happy to sell you expensive tickets to concerts on that day.

I think this song is about more than just “bang bang shoot em up movies” and video games and watching gun violence. I think it’s about culture as a whole and how desensitized we’ve become to violence. bang bang shoot em up movies is a complete metaphor for that and, while I know some will disagree, I think their message is not solely literal. (because we all know gun violence doesn’t just stem from violent movies or video games) overall, tremendous song and video. can not wait for the album. ❤️

As we sort out issues of hatred, racism, cultural differences, historical significance, whose life means more, the Avetts get to the root of it all. If we don’t COLLECTIVELY pay attention to what’s presented here, we’ll never move forward as a society......never. If you don’t believe me, just flip through the channels tonight with this song playing. You’ll get the picture, I think.

Love it. I think people have completely misconstrued his lyrics and seem to forget about artistic observation. He's not saying "media" has made people kill or what not. Conseal or open carry at church slanted in a negative way in this song is not good. If you have armed citizens and members that carry there would not be any lives lost..slim to none compared to the many churches were lives were butchered because no one had a gun to fight the gunmen down at the very moment. Many success stories that the media will not cover. Being armed is caring about your fellow man. That is Love. Not watching and cant do anything about it because your free though about an Object like a Gun is evil.

@@footspade3001 I understand you completely. If these idiots(Rep, Dem, and Lib) would get there crap together than it would be OK. I'm neither of the above, to me it is "Politricks". We don't need to rescind 2nd Amendment rights. We need stronger background checks and certified training with any weapon for anyone to own one. That's it. And as far as church goes, forgive me if I'm wrong (Anti-Religion), is it not a place of enlightenment and "holy" reflection, where something like a gun/spear/knife/etc that is meant to cause harm to others, should not be in the first place?

@@caseylewis8768 Truthfully this is a dumb conversation. If your fist was an evil object cut it off because it could possibly kill someone you should cut it off... what ever necessary to defend yourself. People will find away to kill others...and now 3D Metal printing is on the rise. Guns are made now in private homes. So to say better back ground checks and more gun laws....or gun grabbing will leave more citizens at risk of being defenseless to an armed gunman that does not abide by laws of man. Its a scenario we never want to go though but when it happens you will be better prepared. Thats why going to safety gun classes are good. Fulmilerization of your weapon is your life line for saving your loved ones and friends. Sharing is caring and carrying is sharing love to your fellow man! We glorifying violence in our media, and Republicans have began worshipping guns in imagery, photography, identity politics, etc. and it’s ridiculous. Beautiful work. Perfectly encompasses how I feel. Just tired of the violence. While I don't think that what's on the screen nowadays, video games, movies, or tv shows, etc. is a contributor (mainly video games with all the studies showing no link) this song at least provokes a conversation. That's really all that needs to happen. No one needs to know what the correct answer is, there might not even be one, but the point of music like this is simply to start people talking. That's all. Thank you guys.

You'll never really find a data-verified link, but that doesn't mean it's not there. It's hard to describe culture in terms of statistics. Violence in media is a reflection of society, and the nature of mirrors is such that society is also influenced by them. Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art? It's both, right? Someone didn't point a gun at someone else *because of* a movie, but a movie shows people violence as a way to get what they want. That's what I picked up from the song.

Playing a game over and over again where you can walk around and shoot random people, watch the blood fly, watch them fall, walk on and do it again, and again and again, can't possibly have anything to do with this happening so much in real life... because the news told me a study says it doesn't. To me, this song is more than just what we've seen in the movies. It's what we see on all screens and in all types of media - news, social media and video games included. I've listened to you religiously since 2009/10ish. To say I'm obsessed is an understatement. And while I don't love every song, up until this song I don't think I've ever had a song leave me disappointed before. I've spent time here and on other social media platforms defending songs that had previously been criticized by fans. But here I am, disappointed with this one. I don't mind the preachy type stuff. But this feels shallow in some way. It somehow misses the mark in a way I can't explain. A few songs over the years have taken a few listens to really grow on on me but for this song the play count will stop at one. I guess it was bound to happen eventually. Still looking forward to the new album and my 13th or 14th show come October AND Avetts at the Beach next February. But I guess I know I will skip over at least one song on this new album. @@jackcannon1199 I was about to reply to your comment. I saw it shortly after you posted. I am actually of a fan of their normal technique of mixing in social commentary. Anybody who thinks this is "new" territory is fooling themselves. They've mixed in comments on social issues for a long time but generally they do it in a very creative/artistic way that almost hides the message ("...when nothing is owed, deserved or expected...when your life doesn't change by the man that's elected...if you are loved by someone you are never rejected! Decide what to be and go be it!") "Another Is Waiting" is a terrific song and very much a comment on a social issue. There are many more examples of this. In their released music and the "untitled" tracks you can find all over KZbin. There is just something flat about this effort. It is too preachy while missing something. I love these guys. They put on the absolute best live shows. It is just a new sensation, for me, to be completely disappointed by one of their songs.

@@footspade3001 not necessarily. The actions I took helped me be here now. I think its good to know self defense of course but the circumstance I was in didn't leave many options available. My weariness isn't really about my personal experience. That simply made the point crystalline for me. Its a weariness of the callousness and lack of humanity that seems so prevalent in our country, including the joker Kronos Dorma (too insecure to present a real identity I suppose) who wants to just have silly childish arguments and myopic views and no empathy. I just saw a headline saying the song's about gun violence and leaving out the parts blaming TV, movies, etc. With the lyrics about Sunday, seems like it's really about both. Regardless of who's to blame, I think we can agree that there's no glory in violence for violence's sake, no need to brag about your ability to kill.

Thought provoking song. We should also consider HOW violence is portrayed in film and on television. There is a difference between PG-13 shoot-em-ups that show guns and death as being without consequence, as opposed to, say, a realistic war film that is truthful about the horrors of battle.

I live in Charleston, South Carolina. I'm proud of it, I'm proud of these marshes and the beautiful lowcountry. But the people can be so horrible. It's part of the Bible Belt, and as you may know, is nicknamed the Holy City. You can spot church steeples everywhere. There are also many who still fly confederate flags, and a terrifying amount of people who own way too many weapons. I am not Christian. I see so much of the bad side of Christianity (down here, there's a lot of homophobic and racist Christians) that I sometimes harbor a general distaste for it. But y'all remind me that it is not the belief in God that turns people bad, it is bad people who turn belief in God into an excuse. I greatly appreciate y'alls kindness. Your music has helped me through some very rough times, and it brings tears to my eyes to listen to these words. It's not fucking politics. We just want the violence to stop.
