A few months ago, my nephew and his wife had a baby. Instead of buying them stuff they don't need, I made up a kind of time capsule box. I got a bunch of books that I thought would be good at different ages. So, each birthday the kid gets to open a new book or sometimes a set of books. It starts out with some Dr. Zeus, and later includes Aesop's fables, Narnia, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Animal Farm, 1984, Art of War, The Prince, Lord of the Rings, Age of Reason, and other books that are worth reading. In the last packet, to be opened in 18 years, I included a short video of myself in which I explain why physical books are best because they can't be revised once printed. I encouraged the kid to read all kinds of things and to always be willing to learn. I doubt I will be around in 18 years, but I hope those books are and that my message makes it through.

Juneteenth & gay pride are one month per yr and the library may promote books related to that. And? You make it sound like they had displayed explicit porn all over the walls. That radical conservative group Moms for Library went to a local police station in Florida trying to get a public librarian fired b/c there was a young adult fantasy novel on the shelves. It was a fantasy book with goblins and mystics. And they considered this X rated! This is the kind of radical right hysteria that is getting people riled up over nothing. Two Texas state reps demanded to audit a school and public library for what they thought were indecent materials. 2 books were considered questionable & moved to the adult section. Again, books that celebrate Juneteenth & lgbt history are not inappropriate and serve a portion of the community just like books that celebrate Asian history & culture.

This is completely accurate. I worked at a library for a few years and the computers were almost always filled with the homeless people. Or they came just to charge their phones. While most never caused problems, it did turn people off. We also dealt with drugs and alcohol. I had a man overdose in the bathroom, a woman shoot up in the bathroom in the children's department. As for the children's department, we mostly got kids with their support professionals that weren't kept under control. Most evenings it was chaos, so families didn't come because you couldn't enjoy it. Our homeschooling families used the library for what it was, but I was told that they're not coming like before now that our little library is going woke. It's a shame.

Same! We homeschool and use the library a ton. We have up to 100 books out at a time. But I had to get Charlotte’s Web through Inter-library loan! I could not believe it! I regularly order books through ILL for homeschool because they don’t have a lot of the good ones. And I made the mistake of taking the kids to the library during June once. I could not believe the crap on display in the childrens room. I took pictures to show my husband because I wanted proof that I wasn’t overreacting. But yet, not one single Johnny the Walrus book. 😂 actually, it might not have been published at the time. But They are into that whole “We carry banned books” trope (I.e inappropriate crap for kids in the name of free speech), and their YA section says “adults not allowed” or something like that. It was 100% meant to be a satire of the present world and the path we are on. So I have no idea why anyone is shocked that the world is starting to resemble that world. Like what do people think, they were just like "okay let's imagine this totally unrelated world that has nothing to do with present society, and make people do really silly things that they would never do in real life and never will do"? What would be the point in that? The entire point of satire is to emphasize what really does exist by showing a humorously exaggerated version of it, exactly like drawing a caricature of a person. It's pointless if you just draw an imaginary person with some silly features, the humor derives from it being a representation of a real person. So Idiocracy was a caricature of the present world, with the underlying message that "if we stay on this path, this is what the world will actually look like eventually". So no, that shouldn't surprise you. If there is anything to comment on, it's that the writers called it so well. And in ten years you will look back on 2023 as the good old days before it really got bad.

I even did two semesters of a credit class called "Library Aid". I loved it. So sad to see how things are going nowadays. I was an IT guy in the Florida Dept. Of Education for 24 years. We saw things get progressively worse. A lot of my FlDOE coworkers homeschooled their kids, one parent staying home to teach them. I feel so sorry for today's kids, having the "Rainbow Agenda" shoved down their throats. It's no wonder our children are among the worst educated in the world. Too much indoctrination and propaganda, not enough of the basic "Three Rs". In HS, I also had a deep love for history. Now that is being cancelled or rewritten in some bastardized liberal form. 😢
