1000 degree Red Hot Rocket Knife

Join the science discord! / discord You knew it was coming! Back at it agin with the Rocket Knife, but this time im going full sellout ;) 1000 degree, 150mph knife vs Coke, Silly-String, Bread, Wood, Bricks, and Lighters!
You all gave me so many good ideas last week, I had to try some more. The rocket track is going on the shelf for now, ill bring it back soon, hopefully with a faster camera!

I would say he's probably using E-type rocket motors from Estes. The impulse they are capable of delivering is not all that enormous, so the weight of the object they accelerate determines the final velocity. You can stack motors but then u end up with difficulties with simultaneous ignition. He could try extending the track and using staging, but I would say in the short term there's quite a bit more fun to be had with single E engines and his current sled+knife, but if he wanted to ramp it up to a hatched or some such I would recommend looking at rocket candy home-made PVC motors which usually have burn times in the 1-2 second range and can easily push into H or I motor impulses. It's a LOT of work initially to learn the details and skills to successfully run home made R-candy motors, and the laws in his particular state are very important to pay attention to, but the payoff is a LOT more energy!

Dude my hypothesis is that the temperature of the blade does little to nothing to help it cut. It's just not in contact with the material long enough for significant heat transfer. Plus heating the blade ruins the temper and makes the steel soft. What you ought to try is different degrees of sharpness and different edge geometry and grinds. Here are some grinds that would be interesting to see, scandi, Saber, full flat, convex, and hollow. Also I'd love to see what a rocket powered Busse knife could do. Or how about setting it up for a thrust. Oh yeah how about ballistics gell for both cut and thrust. Very cool video please try some of my ideas :)

Cool video idea!! Put a super strong magnet on the rocket sled and another super strong magnet at the end of the track. Make sure the poles are facing each other and light it up. Record it in high speed to see if the magnets touch, or if they bounce back.

I thought about engineering, but I was afraid I would just end up doing quality control, testing stuff, or even worse- stuck behind a desk! I like to get my hands dirty, and I had a great time doing undergrad research in a biology lab. We were testing the biocompatibility of various SiC polymorphs. I was responsible for maintaining the culture of cells, seeding the different materials with the culture, and recording the results- how many cells died, or lived compared to the controls (gold and platinum controls = all cells lived, silver and copper control = all cells died). Oh yeah engineering has WAY more math ;)
