Should've been the Federation's first clue the Bugs weren't just dumb animals and were more than capable of waging war. Like why else would there be a Bug who can shoot starships out of orbit?
@stormtempterf8058
@stormtempterf8058 3 ай бұрын
The orbital bugs, it was mentioned briefly in passing, but they use their coordinated bursts to redirect asteroids and send spores or such to new worlds. Repurposing for orbital AA fire wouldn't be a stretch. The bugs are very stratified into classes, but real world insects are much the same. A worker ant and a warrior ant will look different. They dont explain in the film if the bugs were a collective of various species working together for a common good/synergistic ecology, or if they were more like the zerg, and had like a larval form that could then metamorph into the various templates depending on the needs of the hive or whatever is directing their overall strategies.

The reason the cgi looks so good here is because of Phil Tippett, one of the great pioneers of modern effects work alongside Stan Winston and Rob Bottin. He also worked on Robocop doing the ED-209 stop-motion effects and then learned and oversaw the cgi animation for Jurassic Park. All the animation, rendering, compositing was done solely by ONE effects house, Tippett studios, under Phil's supervision and in close collaboration with the director Paul Verhoeven. Back in the 90's there were only a handful of effects houses and only 2 or 3 that could do cgi as it was still fairly new. Whereas now, there are hundreds if not thousands of cgi "studios" all competing for film projects and for the most part, the studios will hire whoever is cheapest and can deliver to deadline (the post production process is also much shorter now and effects companies are given far less time to complete shots). You may have several different effects houses in other cities, even other countries, doing different scenes and different jobs (animation, compositing, etc) and probably with very little communication with the producers or the directors. So by the time the finished effects shots come in, it's too late to correct or fix any problems because the studio has a release date that can't be pushed back because they've spent the majority of the budget on advertising and marketing. Which is probably why so many modern movies have such badly done or unfinished looking effects.

Despite Zander's scummy attitude in the first half of the movie, he still has professionalism which is shown when he and Rico acted professionally towards each other despite having a physical fight before the failed invasion of Klendathu and Zander also showed remarkable courage by disembarking the "boat" to help the infantry fight the bugs and choosing to be the last person to board the "boat" despite outranking the surviving soldiers, including Johnny.

True, Xander is often underestimated, before he died he also did a heroic act, protecting Carmen's life over his by giving him the knife and that he could defend himself against what the brain bug would do to him first. I like to think that, much like Rico and a few other characters, Zander had grown up quite a bit at this point. Seeing what took place on Klendathu and the horrors that the MI go through day to day changed a lot of them, including him. Remember the scene with the fisticuffs isn’t just a lot of these characters first time facing the Arachnids, but their first time in combat period. Helldivers is arguably even heavier on the patriotic satire. Starship troopers was supposedly created to show the dangers of fascism, but after watching the film you just want to see the federation win against the bugs and slaughter those ugly things. I guess the federation’s propaganda videos were most effective bcuz theres no way people walk away from that movie thinking the humans are the bad guys.

At the battle of Klendathu, there was more than 100 thousand casualties, which means they must have deployed several armies for them to have suffered that kind of loss. An army can be expected to have several portable nuclear war heads at their disposal, but you can't expect every platoon to be equipped with them. Especially not if you are going in to inspect a friendly base, this was an ambush. They had no idea that bugs were even on the planet.

Is anyone surprised they waste so much ammo when the rifles don't have any iron sights. Also, you can see how dedicated the arachnids are to killing when one bug is getting hit to hell but limps forward to kill that one soldier at 4:58. Also, I don't really like Xander but the fact he came out of the dropship in armor and armed to give cover fire for the retreating troopers was cool to see.

I used to feel the same, about not liking Xander way back when, but Honestly, consider it from his point of view. Like Rico, he was captain of his Team, a top grade student, and a Hero who runs head long into the Enemy if it means he can save lives. Sure he’s a bit bull headed, and he’s taken a fancy to a hot lass, but then what Testosterone fueled Lad isn’t? He Enlisted into the Federal Service, became a Fleet Pilot and Instructor, and Co-Helmed Navy Capital Ships, and even to the end he was defiant in the face of certain death, giving his only weapon to Carmine. If we had followed Xander instead of Rico, he would be the star we would all rooting for. He is a Hero of the Federation.
@dadab8547

He was conceited, pampered and a girlfriend stealer but no one can deny that he was a good soldier and comrade, it would make a lot of sense that he was the one who had the initiative of the rescue in the face of the call for help and he gave his life for Carmen by handing over the knife and staying completely vulnerable.

If you look at the big picture from all standpoints, Xander wanted the hot girl. She was with Rico. She decides to cheat on Rico for him if you go by the deleted scenes. Xander technically wasnt the bad guy for the most part. The only person terrible was actually Carmen for cheating. Other than that, everyone in the movie had great roles for their parts

You know, I'm starting to think Dizzy's death may have partly been Rico's fault. If she had any real hope of surviving her wounds (however unlikely that may have been), Rico dashed them when he pulled that bug's limb from her body. If something is impaled into your body, even if it hurts like hell, that's what's keeping you from bleeding out faster. Dizzy may not have survived either way, but Rico sure as hell sped it along.

Also his teacher Rasczak. I used to think he got cut in half but rewatching it he still had this thighs. A couple of tourniquets to tie off the bleeding and he would have been a double amputee but still alive. Instead Rico gives him a bullet to the chest.

Maybe due to infantry being disposable to the Federation, they aren't given any first aid training, only the medics are. Maybe they are just encouraged to mercy kill any injury they judge as life threatening.

@geckcgt7216 I'm not holding Rasczak against Rico. Applying tourniquets in the middle of a tactical retreat when the area is crawling with bugs is... impractical, to say the least. Secondly, he very clearly told him to put him out of his misery. Remember when he shot the trooper that was taken by the Hopper bug? "I expect any of you to do the same for me." He meant it.
