When I heard "While Me Guitar Gently Weeps" for the first time in 1989, from one of Georges's live performances, I started crying and I was totally infected by the "Beatlemania" virus from which there is no cure! Great songs almost always hold up no matter how they're arranged and this is a perfect example. I've heard at least a dozen versions by different groups/performers, most live and in every case the song still knocks me out. What's frustrating is that practically no one is writing like this today, thanks to the "convenience" of studio effects, lazy writers, etc. creating mostly emotionless, canned recordings...and that is a real shame.

George Martin was brilliant. And there's a big true statement coming now. Here we go. Without George Martin the Beatles either would not have made it at all. Or would not have made it to the extent to which they did. He gave them their break when everybody else had turned them down (virtually everybody). And at first and for most of their whole careers together as the Beatles he told them which instrumentation's would work,which versions sounded better,where to place certain notes or expressions musically. And even added some of his own personally created piano solos and stuff. That said means I take nothing away from the Beatles. They were and still are in my book, the best EVER. I just think with a different producer, they would NOT have done SO well. PEACE ✌ and LOVE ❤
@johnburns40178 жыл бұрын
Brian Epstein threatened to withdraw EMI records from his shops if they did not give The Beatles a record contract. EMI relented and gave him a lowly producer who had little experience of pop/rock bands, on a label few had heard of, Parlophone. EMI wanted to keep their sales up. The first session at Abbey Rd on 6 June 1962 with Pete Best was not an audition, it was the real thing, preparation for a single - a 'commercial test'. Mark Lewisohn found the EMI 'red form' in the archives which proves the Beatles were signed on contract a week before the 6 June 1962 session. Hard evidence. Even Pete Best states that it was not an audition, it was the real thing, they were there to make a single. Martin stated that the Beatles "music was rubbish". On the second session at Abbey Road, the first with Ringo, Martin gave them a song which he said was a 'surefire No. 1 hit', How Do You Do. This 'rubbish' band turned it down. No raw band new to recording would do such a thing. The Beatles did, they were so sure of themselves and what they wanted to do. So, Martin gives a song which is 'surefire No. 1' to a band which is rubbish? A rubbish band could murder the song and make no money. That does not fit. You give songs like that to excellent well known bands as they will make lots of money for the label. Martin said the songs they wrote were poor. They were all hits that were released not long after he first met them. Love Me Do was not promoted enough with The Beatles unable to promote it as they were honouring a contract in Hamburg, so were away. It reached 17 - not bad at all for a record not promoted by an unknown band. Martin has hidden the fact that he was given the Beatles to keep EMI record sales up in the North West of England. He had no choice in having them or not. He never accepted or rejected them, being told to make a single and appease Epstein. If the band flopped EMI had nothing to lose so bye, bye and the EMI sales are still up in the North West.

I am sorry but NEMS was not big enough to seriously effect EMI's sales! If that was the case then Decca would have signed up the Beatles! Brian Epstein tried to bully a lot of record companies to get the Beatles signed up. Only Decca and Parlophone gave the Beatles auditions. George Martin had heard the Decca audition tape before the Beatles auditioned for him - so he knew what they could sound like musically. On a last note, and one that is rarely mentioned, Parlophone at the time (1962) was close to being terminated as a company by EMI. That would have meant George Martin losing his job as executive of Parlophone!
