"Someday, someday my dream will come?" One night you'll wake up and you'll discover it never happened. It's all turned around on you, and it never will. Suddenly you are old. It didn't happen, and it never will because you were never going to do it anyway. You'll push it into memory, then zone out in your barcalounger, being hypnotized by daytime TV for the rest of your life. Don't you talk to me about murder. All it ever took was a down payment on a Lincoln Town Car, and that girl... you can't even call that girl. What the fuck are you still doing driving a cab?“

To me, the emphasis of the world continuing on in the background while the events of the movie take place is one of the things that makes it stand out and is one of the major points of the movie. The top-down scenes of Max's cab being just another vehicle in a sea of headlights, the numerous cars moving in the background while Vincent searches the offices for his last target, and most importantly, Vincent's dialogue about the dead body doing laps on the train for 7 hours before anyone notices. From the acting, the directing, the cinematography and the story, this movie is nothing short of a work of art.

that's a really good point. I was exposed to a lot of death by age 5... I remember at a young age realizing when people die the world dosent stop. you will be forgotten. people go on. and those shots with the background capture that perfectly.

Gorgeous cine work by Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron. It's a clean look with mostly practical lighting on then-new digital cine cameras. I like how Mann makes digital have its own look instead of trying to ape film stocks. Miami Vice takes it further by pushing gain way up and using ambient light, so it's a dirtier and grittier look.
