Nice Cooking! What's unusual about Clam Chowder is that you can eat it in one restaurant and then again down the street and they will be different in taste and how thick it is. One of my favorite Clam Chowder places is an Irish Pub that has the thickest Clam Chowder. I don't know if it's the pepper that you can taste or what other additions they put in it, but it's the best Clam Chowder I've ever had. I think the more you cook it, the more you put your own "twist" on it.
@bobbiejojackson94482 ай бұрын
There was a famous restaurant in Boston called Durgin Park and they had the best clam chowder I've ever eaten. The restaurant was established in the mid 1700s and went through an ownership change in the early 1800s when a man named John Durgin purchased it and changed the name to Durgin Park. They had amazing food and a very cool vibe, where the wait staff were deliberately sassy. The seating arrangement was big long tables that customers were seated at with other customers that didn't know each other. Unfortunately, it closed permanently in 2019, which is a shame but I guess they weren't doing as well as they needed to. If I'd known that they were closing their doors, I would have made a trip to Boston for one last bowl of "chowdah". I believe it was the second oldest restaurant in Boston.

Vicki did great as usual! And like many American dishes, you can totally mix it up with other ingredients to your preference or if you just want to use what's on hand. For example you can use crab instead of clam and call it crab chowder. Of course you couldn't say that's still authentic, but we love a new take on a classic for the most part!

My dad was from coastal Massachusetts and had 'chowda' running in his veins. He used to cover the chowder with pepper and said that real chowder went heavy on the bacon and had a hint of sand in the final product. I make a pot of it at Christmas every year for the family get-together. Put the cubed potatoes in late, otherwise they'll become mushy.

@@Bellastrega1960Not true. It depends on where in New England you're from. Rhode Island clam chowder always has lots of bacon. It's an important part of the recipe. The Merriam Webster definition of chowder is: "a soup or stew of seafood (such as clams or fish) usually made with milk or tomatoes, salt pork, onions, and other vegetables (such as potatoes)". It's also one of those things where every family has their own recipe or favorite way to make typical homestyle dishes, like meatloaf, chili or potato salad. It's a personal taste preference.

Agree! Also, if you have access to fresh crab, you can make seafood stew that's basically clam chowder with crab (and sometimes shrimp or cod) added. If you like, chowder is also delicious with corn in it. Local restaurants here take a sourdough bread bowl and lightly butter the inside of the bowl before lightly toasting it under the broiler in the oven. They also coat the "lid" of the bread bowl with garlic butter and get the inside of the lid nice and crispy. It adds flavor and texture to the bread bowl experience.

How to cut an onion without crying.. #1 Never cut both ends off the onion. That causes vapors to escape that causes tears. -Instead, cut the onion with the root and stem aligned with a knife down the middle. -do not cut the hairy root side off. Instead Cut the stem side off.. -keep hairy root side on. -Cut stem side off, it has a longer root. -keep root side, Hairy on he’s good.. haha. -From here, you should be able to cut the onions anyway you like without cutting the hairy root side off. (Root On) (Stem Off) 😮Hope this helps. 😊 cheers.

There are two main types of clam chowder: Manhattan Clam Chowder (tomato-based) and New England Clam Chowder (cream-based). IMO, New England style clam chowder is the only way to go. Also, the serving of Clam Chowder in a sourdough bread bowl is a San Francisco invention, I believe. As a kid, I remember going to Fisherman's Warf in San Francisco quite a few times and having it served that way. The sourdough bread industry goes back a very long time in San Francisco and is basically the official bread of the city. So, it's kind of an East Coast meets West Coast American fusion to serve it that way. And it's delicious!
