Table goes both ways here. "Put your cards on the table" Means lets talk about them. "While table your ideas" means not talk about them right now, but maybe later..

yes, and table your thoughts most certainly does not mean discard them but just pause conversation about them until a later moment. Put your cards on the table is most certainly a different reference, i.e., "let's talk about every thought you have". A poker reference to 'revealing your cards and nothing is any longer hidden.

I always took "Bye, Felicia" to be not just a conversation ender, but also usually a put down on the person that is taking to you. It's meant to shut them down and insult them some.

"Table an item" or "Table it" doesn't quite mean discard it, it more "Set this aside for later". There is usually an acknowledgment that the item may have importance or signifcance, but not at this moment. There is similarity when we say "Put in on the table", that seems to mean the same in US and UK, or "Put it all on the table"... lay it all out, give everything you got, etc. The order, completely changes the meaning.

“I appreciate you” is relatively new. I don’t think I ever heard it used before maybe a decade ago.

I heard it quite often living in TX. It was used somewhat interchangeably with "thank you". Usually when someone helped you with a task, like holding open a door, holding an elevator, or helping you with a big package or the like. Of course we shortened it to "pre-she-ate-chew" often tagged with buddy, pal, or "for the help". I guess it's spreading like y'all.

1. To add to the explanation of the term “Monday morning quarterback,” NFL (pro football) games are usually played on Sundays. So the sports pundits all give their thoughts on what teams should have done differently during the Monday morning sports news cycle. We also use the term “armchair quarterback” in the same way that he mentioned “armchair pundit” is used elsewhere. 2. “Shooting the breeze” is the more polite form of the term “shooting the sh!t” (i.e., the way you’d phrase it if you were around work colleagues instead of close friends), which actually matches up better with what he’s saying.

"I appreciate you" has become trendy to say over the last few years. I'm 44 years old and never heard anyone say it my entire life until a couple years ago. It's like anything else, certain words or phrases become popular for a short period of time then fade away. I remember back around 2012 all of a sudden a lot of people started saying cheers instead of thank you, it lasted a couple of years then faded away. Now everyone says I appreciate you.

I'm glad someone made this remark. I'm 70 years old and until a few years ago no one walked around saying "I appreciate you" to folks. As you say, it's trendy! (To me, it sounds like advice that originated in a self-help, pop psych book..."Tell the people around you that you appreciate them." lol) This, too, shall pass, I suspect - just as "Hey, Baby, wha's happenin'?" faded out of use long before 1975.

I’m 46 and I have heard it all my life. Said more in the form of “appreciate you/ya” …like when someone has helped you in some way you say “appreciate you or ya”. I’m Gen X but I originally heard Baby Boomers saying it when I was young and I’ve heard it ever since.

I say "I appreciate you" when thank you doesn't feel strong enough. I feel like we say "thank you" for everything almost like a reflex, so when someone does something special for me I like to use stronger words of gratitude and "I appreciate you" seems to do the trick. I also still say cheers instead of thank you a lot at cash registers or pickup windows. Not sure why, it just kinda stuck with me

"Bye Felicia" did originate from the movie Friday. The inside joke started when NWA was partying with several women at a hotel. Then a man came banging on the door, wanting his wife to leave immediately, and her name was, "Felicia."

Monday morning quarterback is because the game is usually played on Sunday, so when someone criticizes what happened in the game the next day they’re acting as if they’re the quarterback. But they have the benefit of hindsight and they’re not the quarterback. Easy to criticize when you didn’t play in the game and it’s happened already.

In my nearly 60 years of life as an American, I can't recall ever having heard someone say "bye, Felicia," unless saying goodbye to someone named Felicia. I wasn't even aware the phrase existed. Apparently Laurence hears it as often as all get out. Maybe it's less of a thing in the Pacific Northwest. 🤷🏻 As for "I appreciate you" I more often hear just "appreciate you" or even "'preciate cha." In any case, I only hear it very occasionally, and usually only among family and friends. "Thank you/thanks" is by far more common.

I am 64 years old and I have never said "I appreciate you" to anyone for anything. I have said this, if someone did something for me or helped me I have said thank you I appreciate it, or thank you I appreciate the help. I have just never said "I appreciate you" because that is just something I would not say in those words. I rarely ever say Monday Morning Quarterback, I do say it once in a while, but very rarely, maybe once or twice a year, if that. Same with shoot the breeze, I rarely ever say that, maybe once or twice a year. I would most likely say shoot the shit, which means the same thing. I never say your John Hancock, I would just say sign this, or sign your name here. I also almost never say Bye Felicia, it was a thing a year ago or so, and I remember saying it a few times, but not any more, I do not say it now, and neither does anyone I know say it now. It was a fad that is over now. I never say "as all get out," it is just not something I would ever say for any reason. Only people in politics say table an item, I have never said it in my life. I plead the fifth, is in the constitution, you can plead the 5th to not say anything that might make you look guilty of something, so you have the right to plead the 5th if you are arrested, or you are in court. It just means you have the right to not say anything, and let your lawyer do all the talking. But let me say this, anyone who does plead the 5th might as well just admit you are guilty, because when we see someone plead the 5th, we just assume they did it and they are guilty. So when or if you ever plead the 5th, you might as well just plead guilty because everyone is going to assume you are guilty.

I have a suggestion for a reaction video. The comedian George Carlin does a bit called “Expressions and Sayings”. It’s about these things we say or used to say in our country that really don’t make sense. George brings this to light only as he can! I think from late 70’s or the 80’s live stage show. 👍

"to table" something, means to set it aside to think it over and discuss it later. Often this is a phrase used when we need to give something more thought before we make a decision or the time is just not right to discuss something the term does not mean to discard or forget about it all together. If people are using it that way, are using it incorrectly

American Football is traditionally played on weekends, high schools on Fridays, colleges on Saturday, and pro games on Sunday. Thus Monday Morning Quarterback. Pro games now get played pretty much any day of the week.

People have started using "I appreciate you" way too much. Saying I appreciate YOU should only be used for more personal or bigger tasks, like "I appreciate you for driving me to see my sick mother in the hospital", or "I appreciate you for spending the day helping me move into my new apartment." Saying I appreciate IT should be used for smaller tasks like leaving a tip at a restaurant. When I'm at work and someone says "I appreciate you" it sounds weird and too personal, almost like they're coming on to me or something.

Boy this video is "Out of left field!" The phrase came out of baseball in Chicago where one of the early baseball parks had an insane asylum just outside the stadium in left field, thus the meaning is it is weird, mad, and irrelevant to the main topic.

John Hancock, in fact, signed it first and largest. Because King George didn't see well to read and Hancock didn't want him to miss it. It is not a myth or legend, it is logged in the Congressional Journal. Hancock said it when he signed it. They all knew very well what they were doing and the consequences.
