The Oath - Mercyful Fate [Bass Playthrough by Becky Baldwin]

'The Oath' - The first song I played with ‪@MercyfulFateOfficial‬ , both in rehearsal in Dallas and when the curtain dropped on my first show at their guest bassist back in 2022.
In this track we are treated to a range of fun bass lines, with thunderous, unrelenting triplets, rapid fills, melodic counterpoint, harmonics, and a cheeky bass solo!
This playthrough stays as true as possible to Timi Hansen's original bassline from the 1984 recorded release. The only change made is the end of the bass solo at 3:54 I have borrowed a descending line that Joey Vera would play for his live shows for Mercyful Fate (I thought this change was really cool!)
This is my first recording for KZbin where I've had the pleasure of using my new Quad Cortex by ‪@NeuralDSP‬ which made the process much simpler by using the two XLR outputs to simultaneously record a clean and a distorted tone (usually I have to use a DI box to split the signal and achieve this). She deserves the job. Great work. But I'm just not sure if the sound of a Rick would fit in for the songs. It does have it's own signature sound. It all comes down to whether King wants his songs to sound the same as they did in the past. I mean, I don't care. But if I was wanted all the songs sounding pure and original, I'd go with a Spector (I usually play bass and absolutely love Spectors) or an Ibanez.

I'm thankful that I was able to finally see Mercyful Fate live, before that inevitably became an impossibility. Saw them play in Philly last year, and Becky filled in for Vera quite well. Hansen would have been proud.

I can watch these practices all day. I couldn’t imagine having to show up tight with these songs. So many changes and different riffs to a song. Not for amateurs. Becky is good enough to be in ANY band and any band would be lucky to have her. She’s got it all. Love her equipment and tone.
