Thank you for your video on the effects of the Treaty of Versailles and its impact on post-WWI Germany. Your flashback to being bully is very convincing, but I do feel your presentation is only focused at one short period in time. First, let us not forget that it was Germany (under Wilhelm II) who led Germany's army to invade Belgium (a neutral country who did not want anything to do with the conflict between France and Germany) and attacked France on Belgium and French soil. Belgium and northwestern France was utterly devastated by the fighting. WWI on the western front was not fought in Germany. Second, at the end of the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 Germany imposed a huge war reparation payment on France and annexed Alsace-Lorraine region from France. Rather humiliating? Plus the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian war was fought in France, and Paris was besieged by Prussian artillery siege guns. France was devastated by this war and had to pay Germany (under Prussian hegemony) for war reparations even though the war was not fought in Germany. At the end of the Franco-Prussian War Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm I decided to proclaim establishment of the German Empire at the Palace of Versailles. In fact, Bismarck wanted a war with France because he want to unite the German States into one German Empire. So it was Prussian policy to use war (or violence) to implement government policy. A philosophy echoed in a Clausewitz's thinking in his famous book "On War." Humiliating is it not? Who is the real bully? Let us not forget that Prussia is known for the Soldier King and his son, Frederick the Great who is also known for his exploits in using war to take land from his neighbors. And finally let us not forget that East Prussia is founded by the Teutonic Knights also know for violent conquests of Eastern Europe. Just ask the Polish people who had their country annexed away by the Prussian kingdom. You provided a good presentation, but you only looked at the situation in a very limited manner. The long history of Europe is very complex. In fact if Napoleon did not the create the Confederation of the Rhine, there would be no Prussian led German Empire.

In 1870, it was Paris which declared war, mobilized first, and invaded first. The intention was to break up a union of German states before it became effective (Paris still had good relations to Baden and Bavaria). Obviously, the Paris *preventive warfare* scheme of "breaking up" an alliance of German states which looked destined to overpower it economically, and which wouldn't supply the future "divide and rule" small Kingdoms/states, to hop onto while playing "Napoleon war games" in Central Europe, at the expense of the people living here, played the major role in this decision by Napoleon III. Also that Austria did not "want revenge for Koniggratz" didn't play into the French scheme to remain the continental top dog.

Lebensraum referred to new German land that lied in the East and to a lesser extent to the West that the Germans needed to naturally develop into an even bigger superpower, they needed land for natural resources. Lebensraum doesn't seem to be a term that refers to the land that Germany lost in the Treaty of Versailles, it's always used to refer to the expanses of the Soviet Union and Poland which Germany would use to farm and mine to increase its economy and by extent its capacity to make war.

during my mocks I made revision cards and mindmaps for the cold war and germany. I came out with a B in my mocks and I am aiming for an A*. Now I am currently revising for History I don't know what to do as I don't see the point in making revision cards all over again, but I can't just be reading over them as part of me learning is doing the cards and making them. Any tips on how to revise now?
@BenNewmark
@BenNewmark 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jaya. If you came out a B in your mock you probably need to concentrate on learning to apply what you know rather than just learning more. I would suggest completing as many past exam questions as you can and asking your teacher to give you feedback. Concentrate on the types of question and topics you are least happy about, and make sure you time yourself. Just keep doing them, asking for feedback, and doing them again until they are perfect. You'll there.

Comparing the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 to the Treaty of Franfort of 1871 is one of the more popular memes of amateur historians. One often sees this "tit for tat"-logic on YT. There is however little to compare, beyond reparations and territory (Alsace-Lorraine). Let's have a look at what Prussia (or rather the newly formed Germany) did *not* do to France, a nation which had both declared war first, and invaded/attacked first in 1870. 1. It did NOT take away the entire French navy. 2. It did NOT take away all the French colonies. 3. It did NOT take away almost the entire French merchant marine. 4. It did NOT cut off parts of France, in order to give it to nations which never even fought (for example "cutting off" the Basque Lands, to hand over to Spain). 5. It did NOT create new artificial states to surround France, and to subsequently create new alliances with (For example "free" Corsica, and then subsequently created a German-Corsican alliance as an official "encirclement policy") 6. It did NOT cut off 15% of the French population, and simply "awarded" them to new, artificial, and independent states, leaving French citizen to travel across a foreign state in order to visit friends and relatives.. 7. It did NOT steal pre-war French economical concessions, or French markets, which enabled France (the aggressor) to pay her reparations without the need of excessive foreign debts. 8. It did NOT eclipse the entire French economic sphere of influence in the world, leaving her economy with only France proper to deliver goods to. 9. It did NOT force France to destroy coastal fortresses in the Mediterranean Sea (I kid thee not, Versailles had a clause concerning German coastal fortresses in the Baltic) In fact, France was (hint hint) even invited to the negotiations, and allowed to make counter arguments, resulting in concessions to the French side (for example, the status of the city of Belfort) in the Treaty of Frankfort in 1871. 1871, and 1919 just cannot be compared... "Apples and oranges"-style comparisons to deflect from what really happened.

If I understand this correctly, An agreement was signed to cease fighting on Nov 11 1918 "Armistice day" but the English Naval blockade of German ports remained in place causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of German woman and children (over 3/4 of a million actually) for another 8 months until Germany signed the treaty of Versailles June 28 1919 where Germany was starved in accepting staggeringly huge and unjust penalty's being stripped of all her colonies, Forfeiting huge areas of Germany and all her Gold and military hardware and was forced to except full responsibility for the war she did not start and pay huge reparations. This is how the English defeated the Boers (Farmers) in South Africa, they rounded up all the Boer (Farmer) woman, children and old people in South Africa and put them in concentration camps and proceeded to stave them to death until the Boers (Farmers) surrendered. Only Psychopaths the Scum of the Earth would do such a thing and thats exactly what the ruling class in England were and are. Fucking Baby killing Bastards.

The question is not "whether (of not) Versailles was a failure", but WHY it failed. Versailles failed because of a "lack of foresight" and a lack of wisdom. The premise is false. According to age-old observation regarding human nature and warfare, Machiavelli stated that there are only two ways to "deal with" a defeated enemy: 1) *destroy completely,* and make sure he doesn't come back later to take revenge 2) *be fair,* in other words biblical values like "do onto others" determine the rules To be fair is to be wise. Europe lacked wise leaders. *There are no other good options.* History has proven. Only bad options remain. Bad options = the world set up for "eternal war". "Bad options" are choice, not necessity. According to the widespread European leaders' standpoint of "keeping a balance in power" between states in an effort to keep the peace, meant that in logic/reason and human nature, only option 2) remained as a valid way to proceed. In step the "losers" of Versailles. They enforced their 400+ point "peace plan"-division of the continent along random "lines drawn on the map" with a gun on the chest of Central Europe's main power. *What could possibly go wrong?*
