@Exilum2 ай бұрын
Manifest V3 sunsetting v2 does annoy me, but he's right about companion windows. Unlike regular pop-ups, they can't be used for spam ads. They are in the content area, they do not overlay other websites or any navigation button you'd need, and they don't bother you in anything you're doing. Rather than pop-up windows, they're pop-up sections. Taking youtube as an example, it would allow you to browse anywhere on youtube while the video is still playing. It is a premium feature but it isn't as smooth as it could be, as you can't move it around, and it doesn't really integrate back all that well when you go back to the video's page. With that API, it'd be way smoother.

Just, no. This is so ripe for abuse that it's not even funny. Let's play ads one after the other in a popup window that is either docked or follows an element around on your page (through multiple pages). Let's not add a way to close this. Let's have it play audio as well. I can see countless ways to abuse this, and very few use cases that can't already be kludged around. Are those hacks annoying? Yes. Are they imperfect? Yes. The alternative is to have a popup window playing audio and video ads as I navigate the site, and can't be dealt with unless I leave the site. Would developers do such a thing (floating ads that cannot be caught or destroyed)? Yes. For sites with important information, you'll now have a captive audience. Again, just no.

The big thing I fear about this is my assumption that it will lead to browser states being impossible to represent via a URL and thus impossible to bookmark and impossible to share. For all the benefits of native apps on the desktop, the address ability of the web is a super valuable benefit that native apps don't share, and I fear that if adopted, more and more website states will not share either. 😟

Wonder if they’ll expose an API to enable an easy way to designate a region for drag positioning as well (a likely use case). Also, I wonder how it’ll handle reloads if it is unaffected by navigation. Sometimes persisting across reload makes a lot of sense. Then again, the user attempting to reload the companion window may get annoyed if a reload doesn’t fix some bug in it because it persists unexpectedly. 🤔

Man, people are really freaking out over nothing, right? They hear the term "pop-up" and assume that what is being designed is a separate window API. From reading the docs, it sounds like a typical inline pop-up library. This API could be implemented in JS today, but the reason they want to implement it into the browser appears to be to make it more responsive (since they want to attach it to elements). The biggest criticism of it is that it wants to be a standard when it doesn't need to be. Could ADs use it? Sure, but they already do this behavior anyways.

Get rid of HTML/CSS/JS entirely and reduce down to a single data focused programming language. If you want a proper application, use a proper application. What we generally refer to when we say "the internet" should not be the solution for every problem. It should not be the endpoint for every path. I know this falls on deaf ears, as pretty much every post I make on KZbin does, but everything is shit and it's because of the people that keep proposing this utter nonsense.
